  1. Are you sure that 50mm works out at 1.25mm at 1:32 scale? To me that sounds like it scales up to 40mm.

If so, it's a good thing that you scaled up to 1.5mm. Still underscale by 0.06mm, but better than the 1.25 you planned.

I'm also on the side of red oxide. It sounds like you plan to effectively show it as a "cutaway", so it stands to reason that one would show the correct colours of the presented sections. It also rings true to the attention to detail you've shown thus far, especially where colour is concerned.

  2. I have order number 2489, first payment/deposit for a King, £67.50. I can't add it directly to the spreadsheet at this time, so I'm hoping some kind fellow could do it for me? If my name is required I can provide that too.

With a class of over 400 locomotives, all in various liveries, makes the Hunslet 18" Austerity a very attractive proposition. If you leave out the fictitious liveries, there is/are nearly 200 identifiable bona-fide liveries to be seen.

Perhaps all is not lost, after all!

    Ian.

I've been interested in an N scale Austerity pretty much since I got into this hobby back in 2015; I'm under the impression that Dave's plans to make this model surfaced shortly before.

Knowing the quoted statistics, it baffles me that there isn't any other version at this scale, discounting the old Graham Farish model. Especially given the rise in popularity for industrial locomotives in the last few years.

I'd held up hope that Dave's model would get past the planning stage, but we know that's not happening now. Hopefully somebody else might fill this rather large gap? I believe Dapol are working on/have expressed interest in an Austerity at O scale, maybe they can shrink it in much the same manner as they did their Terrier as part of the process of producing the Rails OO model?

    Apologies for the thread drift.

  4. I find it strange that the OO ones are available separately, yet the N versions can only be bought as a set.

Has there been any official statement about whether they will be made available separately at some point in the future? I only need one of the brake coaches for my preservation era layout, so a full set is expensive and unnecessary for me

  5. But surely this one was mooted at least two years ago... am still interested so id better go formally express that

It was never mooted, just one of the projects put to one side until funds from other projects (primarily the OO version) started rolling in.

I think the O scale version is in doubt, but the N one certainly wasn't. That might change with the recent rise in popularity for O scale.

  6. I only found out because somebody else mentioned that news was being released on the website, I think I read that on the King thread?

Every option available in OO is there, including the RMWeb exclusive "65". Until "66" (the last standard gauge steam locomotive made in Britain until Tornado) gets made I'm most interested in Wilbert.

I hope it does come to fruition, this is a project that was announced around the time I got into the hobby and have been looking forward to since.

  7. Just to make people aware, Dave is currently only running out of his website, discussion on this is elsewhere.

The N gauge J94 expressions of interest have opened, it looks like most of the options offered in OO are available, including NCB 65 which had been an RMWeb exclusive before. I've put an order in for Wilbert

  8. Bumping this thread only because my memory was jogged today by this: -

This strikes me as such a great choice, I do wonder if crowdfunding it would be an option, after all there are (as with the 00 one) almost limitless livery variants and subtle differences between locos.

    Roy

I did mention 66 to Dave a couple of years ago, around or possibly before the first batch liveries were revealed, I can't remember; I recall that it was on the list to be considered for a later batch. I would be very interested if it does become a reality, doubly so if it's released as one of the N gauge models.

  9. I hope the orders are going well. I have a hotmail account and hotmail decided to automatically put the email from DJ Models into junk. As I have a quick look at my junk box from time to time I found it but it might be that some people with hotmail accounts haven't actually seen the email from DJ Models because of this. I don't know what can be done about it but it may be a cause for some people who expressed an interest not raising an order.

Same here, Hotmail put my account creation and order confirmation emails in the junk folder. It must have failed some sort of check, but I have no idea.

The strange thing is, the email sent out before that saying to order the Kings, went in my inbox. Weird.

  10. Try contacting Bachmann directly.

I've tried this, got a Bulleid coach off eBay, missing a handrail and I enquired whether I could get Commonwealth bogies separately to help with modifying a coach to represent the NRM's support coach 99953.

They don't do spares for coaches, locos only it seems.

  11. Thanks. The layout is based on an NCB exchange sidings in South Wales so an Austerity would be pretty useful. There is a kit for the Peckett but I’ve had no luck sourcing the chassis

As woodenhead says, a pannier would be another option.

Re the Peckett, if it's a four-coupled example then n-drive productions should be able to help, otherwise if it's a six-coupled example you'd need to look elsewhere and probably use another RTR model as a donor.

  12. I’m not asking for detailed updates or timescales but with the cancellation of the class 17 I wondered how/if this would affect the plans for the J94 in N. Is this still planned to go ahead?

To my knowledge, Dave has said that it is still going ahead, it depends on funding coming in from the OO models; plus he is busy with a few other projects at the moment, such as the APT and King, it would come in time.

I’m asking because I’m thinking of a new layout for which an industrial tank is pretty much essential. So I don’t want to start cutting wood if this isn’t going ahead.

    Thanks

Would it need to be a J94/Austerity? Would kit building be an option? I have seen a few kits out there, including a Peckett with a 3D printed saddle which takes a lot of the effort out of forming it.

At the end of the day, this is your layout we're talking about; don't take this as me trying to stop you or turn you away from Dave's work.

  13. Hello, I'm posting here because I can't find any threads about this searching here or on the N Gauge Forum, and Google is next to helpless.

I've picked up the old Graham Farish Shredded Wheat locomotive as part of a listing, the coaches will be used for a Colonel Stephens style layout. I want to use the loco as a double heading dummy.

I've found a few tutorials where people have motorised this model, but that's not what I'm looking for. What I'd like to know is how I'd go about improving/replacing the axles and con-rods to allow the model to go round corners. Couplings, cosmetic changes and paint can come later, but I want a smooth running chassis first.

  14. Dave,

I signed up with an "expression of interest" on your website, and contacted you by email as mentioned earlier. I haven't been invoiced for a deposit, but I'm not sure if you're at that point yet.

    Jay

The deadline's been extended, due to orders still coming in steadily and a show coming up which Dave is hoping to attend and drum up further interest

  15. I did. They replied and said, pretty much as per the press release, that it was now not their project anymore and that it was up to DJM if it goes ahead now. The OO Gauge thread is now deleted altogether so it seems DJM is not looking to release it any time soon. I'd never buy an N Gauge one, since I will never go that Gauge, so I'll have to make do with Hornbys King.

Dave said when he announced interest in doing a King in N, that a OO scale model would be less successful due to the fact that there are already several versions on the market, for example the Hornby one you mentioned.

The idea that a OO version may be made in the future has been mentioned, but I think more by other people rather than by Dave himself.

  16. I've already put my name down for the late crest one, because it fits the time period of my layout, but looking at those pictures of 6023 has made me start thinking about changing my order.

Considering my layout is a Midland branch it would be out of place regardless; I already own one of the K&ESR engines (my local railway) so it's not too much more of a Rule 1 stretch.

  17. "...in conclusion it's been a great journey" sounds like it's the end. It may be the end of the series, but I feel it isn't the end of modifications. We could see post starting with "the other day I found a GBL Class XYZ I had forgotten about, and wondered....." for many years to come.

Have faith, fellow travellers. The journey is not over.

Very true, I like to believe that we'll see many more conversions in the future. I myself have a few planned, I'm just waiting for my meagre income to build up enough to support some of them.

Also of note, the build a solar system partwork has recently started circulating again. It's a very long shot but by that idea it could be possible that GBL makes a revised comeback in a few years or Amercom may have the next series in the wings. It's just a case of waiting to see what happens.
