"As I am 80 this year I have finally decided to retire.  So with immediate effect Nucast at Forest Row has ceased trading.  All of the stock of the reissue kits I held is being passed to Brian at Branchlines who is not closing down.

The future of the Nucast range has not been decided yet and is currently on hold. The moulds and casting machines are now in storage.  We are unable to provide any spares or special orders from the range, or produce more stock.

Please contact Brian on 01373 822231 as he's currently experiencing email problems.2

I either missed this quote or misread it, its a very sad day where the range has been put on hold again, I totally understand Dave's position and as well as thanking him for the dedication and service to railway (and car) modelers I wish him well in his retirement

But a range we thought was being brought back into circulation, now has an uncertain future again. Personally I think its sad these kits are not readily available again, lets hope a solution to the issues can be found

Possibly Squires will take this on , as they did the Finecast range?

Hi Jamieb, looks like you mixed the same colour as me and yes I think the blue is a bit high, looking at various photos the blue comes upto and including the plank adjacent to the window sills and the middle of the door but I suppose the painters could interpret the spec as they go.

    Cheers,

    Dave F.

    Hi Dave

I used Humbrol 89 (from memory) but I've seen quite a variation in old photos.I do however think that the buildings at Grosmont on the NYMR are a bit off

My paint scheme was based on pictures of Snaith West and Bolton Abbey, however Embsay Junction is more in keeping with your scheme

As you say, it was likely down to interpretation from the painters ,not to mention the height of the box

That looks very nicely done, and I've always liked that regional livery.

As a comparison, here's my not quite finished Ratio version in the same livery. My blue goes higher than yours, was there any hard and fast ruling to this?

I have a SEF D1 on the bench. It's the same basic kit as the wills with a newer etched chassis. The dimensions are correct for the E1. But that has been put on pause since I discovered the C14 kit existed. That will be next in line :)

Interesting,I was kind of hoping it was correct for a D1 but wrong for the E1, then I would have an excuse to build it as a D1 and buy a Rapido 6 wheel version!

    Why?

Im not trying to be facetious, just wondering why it would put you off.
Unless all three of you are looking to exhibit the layouts, but that again would depend on relative location.

If I wanted to  build a model of a particular location it wouldn’t bother me how many other models of that location there are.  It’s my interpretation and my creation of something I obviously like and want to model.

Frankly, because they were both better than I could have achieved at the time!

A bizarre question - why wouldn't it be fine? There aren't model railway police for this sort of thing. If they were, then they would have arrested loads of people for building Ashburton.

Not Ashburton ,but I did once make a start on a model of Hemyock until I saw 2 other versions in the modelling magazines within the space of a few months

Then the metaphorical Model Railway Police knocked on the door and forced me to change my plans,so I switched to the LBSC!

Yes, you get common parts for the D1 and E1 with half etched lines to trim some of them for a D1(*). Otherwise it flies together.

    * In case anyone is thinking that Albion cheated and used the same body for both types and ignored the dimensional differences, like Finecast did.

Just out of interest, is the Finecast kit correct for the D1 OR the E1, and does this apply to the more modern SE Finecast, or just the original Wills one?

    Afternoon everyone,

I'm still on the hunt for some Markits 6'2" 18 Spoke LNER Driving wheels, I can't seem to find them anywhere! Got to a point with my NER G class where I can't continue without them!

If anyone has any sat in a draw and you don't need them anymore, please direct message me so we can discuss a price. I only need 4, gauge not important 😀

    many thanks,

    Dylan

Theres a set of Sharmans on eBay which looks the correct size, depends if you're happy to use push on wheels?

I don't know how or why the guys at Accurascale put up with all the whining, whinging and sniping they get on here.

The service they provide is over and above all others, always seemingly available on here at all hours of the day, offering to help and indeed constantly repeating what to do if there is a problem.

But that doesn't seem good enough for some of the posters on these threads.

People, get a grip, stop the whinging, follow the processes set in place and give the guys a break.

I think the problem is that certain people on here (not Accurascale themselves I hasten to add) set them up as the model railway equivalent of The Second Coming, which they were never going to be able to live up to!

So the Manors had a few problems,no more than Hornby,Dapol or anyone else, but the expectation had been built up to a level befitting the Emperor's New Clothes and there was a certain amount of smug satisfaction in some quarters that it wasn't all perfect

It seems to me that Accurascale have a good product and their engagement on here is second to none, but teething troubles are always just around the corner ,as is the British disease of 'Build em up to knock 'em down' !

I'm sure they are thick skinned enough to take fair criticism when offered and pragmatic enough to know that they will never please all the people all of the time

Well the the t*rd progresses. Actually t*rd is more than a little unfair when you consider that for twenty quid you end up with a nice running loco albeit one with slightly bizarre proportions.

So why have I spent money and time on this when I could be making more structures for Northern Town or fashioning further rolling stock with greater scale pretensions? Well there's something rather satisfying in taking an item that on the face of it has little going for it and by effort, ingenuity and sharp knives turning it into something moderately presentable. While it will always score zero for authenticity, freelance creations can have charm and whimsey and I think the world is a better place for such stuff.

So what have I done since the last update? I've concentrated the plastic surgery to the outer ends, nose and booty if you will. At the front I've shortened the smokebox back to the saddle and at the rear the coal rails have been cut off and the cab rear spectacle plate extended down.  Still a way to go but I think all the big stuff is done.

This reminds me very slightly of the train in Lowry's Level Crossing painting

I too grew up in Brighton in a house backing onto the main Depot. As a child the mere sight of trains was enough, as an enthusiast it is somewhat less interesting beyond the architecture and infrastructure.

Yes,Brighton station had enough going on to pique an interest, but I'm an LBSC modeller too and imagining it over 100 years ago ,looking down from Terminus Rd or the turntable at New England road, there would be no comparison!

    …or the complete opposite - 1980s blue!

Yes,I suppose that is an option for some, but I have to admit, growing up in East Kent and then Brighton, there was never much of interest on the railways, rarely even saw a diesel locomotive,it was all multiple units,so when I got into trains I instantly gravitated to steam

  13. I suspect the reason for the increase in pre group modelling is down to age.

Nobody under the age of 60 can really remember the railways being steam hauled,so modellers of that age and older are most likely recreating what they saw in the 50s and 60s when in their youth.

Those of us who are younger, have no such nostalgic memories and thus are more likely to choose a time when the railways were at their zenith, together with more variety of stock and colourful liveries

I remember when DDC first came along there was quite a lot of talk about the chips damaging RG4 type motors. The general consensus was that coreless motors wern't compatible with DCC. So my first step would be to remove any chip fitted to a loco with that type of motor and test it on DC then if all is well fit a new chip that is compatible with the RG4 style of motor and try again. RG4s are changing hands for up to £75 and even higher these days so spending a few quid more for a compatible chip could save you north of 75 quid. I would also give the gearbox a good clean and re-lubricate with a suitable light grease as the RG4 is well known for the grease solidifying and gumming up the works thus burning out the motor.

    Regards Lez.

I've never had a Portescap motor, and given the price, probably never will, but I've always been under the impression that it's prime quality was the bevel  gearbox rather than the motor? To that end, could the motor part not be replaced with something more suited ( not coreless) to DCC?

    Or am I oversimplifying things?
