There's a whole hobby of Land Rover Defender enthusiasts in Britain who pimp up their vehicles to be able to compete in the Paris-Dakar Rally or operate with the SAS in Afghanistan so they're properly prepared to make the arduous trip to Tesco or the next Land Rover show.

The second item is a psychopath in training. The most chilling thing said to me gleefully by a child was I have found a hole the cat can't get out of. He went on to shoot his Dad in the back and I lost track of him after that.

Well, the weather did indeed put paid to my hoped-for trip to Attingham Park this afternoon. Instead I tried to fix our ancient Technics record deck of at least 25 years of age which refuses to do anything remotely connected with playing a record. Sadly I was unable to find what is wrong so transferred my efforts to looking for someone who can fix it. I think I may have found one in Nantwich, which is only about 15 miles away so I've sent an email asking whether they can, in fact, help and hope to hear from them on Monday. My sons think that I should embrace new tech and get an Alexa or something rather than persist with vinyl records and such but although I have gone as far as CDs and even iTunes I still like playing my old discs.

Dinosaur, me? I've even got an electric soldering iron!

With my turntable I lifted it up and the belt drive fell to pieces I obtained a replacement for about a fiver but round tuit wasn't included and three years later it still doesn't work.

Unusual. A few decades ago, I recall a London Underground car-card ad campaign by a firm offering office air-con kit. They had a cartoon character called Mr Cool or similar. One of his lines was "I keep my socks in the fridge!" Perhaps we should have a fridge-content confessional on here?

    Er NO!

I’ve just bought Jill a new iPad because her old one is now Neolithic and can’t update so more and more web sites won’t let it play. Unfortunately when I fired it up my iPhone was in my pocket so they immediately fell in love and started to share passcodes etc. I’ve now got to set about dissuading it from pursuing this love affair and become independent. Isn’t technology wonderful sometimes?

No is the short answer. As for Apple's resource wasting  model of capitalism the less said the better.

Oh well, at least you got to stand where he did. He was much loved here, something about him just endeared him to the Australian supporters and the players. If Dickie Bird gave one of ours out it didn't seem as bad.

    Because he was right.

This is what happens when you allow planners and designers to work from home with no requirement to attend site meetings!

I think also linked to subsidy/incentive per metre of cycleway provided.

On a more serious note, I rarely used the  cycle lanes in Leeds because use they were so full of rubbish and broken bottles etc.  Obviously a cleaning budget hadn't been allocated.  I did use one occasionally and often had to go out into the main carriageway to avoid parked cars.  As to traffic lights.  I ended up on the bonnet of a car that turned across me at some lights.  I had the right of way,she was turning right.  I didn't see you she said, I am fairly large and had a yellow jacket on.  I did ask her when she was going to get her eyes tested and she had a large dent in her bonnet to sort out.  Fortunately I was unharmed.

I found cycling from Headingly in Leeds down to Gildersome each morning that wearing a black motorcycle jacket and steel toe capped work boots made me much easier to see, and also given a much greater clearance by passing vehicles. I don't recollect any cycle lanes at the time (1982) but I have forgotten a lot of things.

I am currently reading a good book about that:

AUSTERITY BRITAIN 1945-1951 by David Kynaston

    He wrote a second volume

FAMILY BRITAIN 1951-1957 by David Kynaston

I have it and will read it immediately following AUSTERITY .

There was supposed to be a third volume but I never found it and had forgotten about it.

It must have been catching. In the same period I worked with a chap who used to buy cheap bangers at car auctions, at which his brother who was an AA patrolman would accompany him to give them the once over so that he didn't buy anything dangerous or liable to die in short order, then run them until they became uneconomical, scrap them and repeat the process. Generally they could find cars with valid MOTs at knock down prices and when the time came to dump them it was surprising how much he got for scrap. He used to keep a record of everything and he claimed that the sums came out quite favourably compared with buying more expensive cars and keeping them for longer.

    Called banger economics.

Another good idea is when the sharp bend chevron signs are somewhat wonky and damaged.

Or in the case of our local corner bent posts where the chevrons were and the broken concrete posts and missing fence parts

It doesn't look like a headstock or winding house. But I'm no expert in such things.

@PupCam - Your telescope is labelled as a "Sky Watcher" so if you can see any sky through it...  I've a cheapo 4" reflector on an equally cheapo equatorial mount with completely bargain basement eyepieces.  I can't use it as the area around my house is blasted by high-intensity LED streetlights.  At least I didn't waste too much money on it!

As soon as his Putinness declared that they had caught the "killers", I immediately thought that they had just rounded up the usual suspects.  That he said they were caught running away to Ukraine was the cherry on the top!

No doubt they'll come to a protracted sticky end...

More likely returned to their unit...

On people not understanding industry, I had a good example yesterday.

Ships have reduced speed over the last 15 years or so, meaning they need much less power. As a result there's been a lot of engine power de-rating, which can include rebuilding the engine with smaller bore cylinders (the opposite of boring out). So far so good.

I was shown a request by one of the engine works from a shipping company to reduce bore from 980mm to 430mm. That's ridiculous, it's not just the bore, it's the stroke, the shafting and everything else. As the guy who shared it remarked, what was worrying is it was a serious request from a technical manager who should presumably know something about engines. If you want to downsize by that much you need a new engine.

A conrod so thin it would collapse under the weight of the piston never mind combustion.
