  1. You folks really are a remarkable goldmine of information. Thanks so much!

Back in 2020 I started a thread 'Yet more weed killing trains' with quite a few photos, some of which were southern related (from memory), but unfortunately when the IT problems hit, as with many photos from other threads, they 'disappeared'. I'll try to find the originals again in my archive and repost them here - but it might take a while.

Yes @iands, I did in fact come across that thread and it’s a real shame that all the images were deleted. If there is anything you can share in addition to the above I would be most grateful.

  2. Hello all,

I wonder if any of you clever folk can help me out.

I came across a 1956 image of C Class 31583 and K Class 32346 double-heading a Cuckoo Line weed spraying train in the book ‘Southern Region Memories: Photographs from the Bluebell Museum Archive’ by Sharp and Hillman (electronic version of the same image on the Bluebell’s excellent website, here). I don’t want to violate copyright by reproducing the image on this forum.

My question is regarding the tank wagons in the train: this date is far too early for TTAs or equivalent, and besides the wagons have 6 wheels yet look far too big to be repurposed milk/oil wagons. Can anybody shed some light on what these are? Perhaps rebuilt locomotive tenders? And if so, could anybody point me to further reading and ideally some better photographs?

    Thank you in advance!

Except there was not any 10" window vent FKs. The Diagram 2552 FKs introduced in 1949 had 15" vents

According to Gould, Firsts 7648 in Set 473, 7635 in Set 801, and 7630 in Set 802 were  contractor-built carriages ordered in 1946/46 with 10" ventilators. It was from 1949 onwards that the 15" began to arrive in 'N' sets. In total, 17 FKs existed.

If I have misread Gould's book I apologise in advance but I have updated my original post with '15"' to reflect.

    Thanks Andy.

I really don’t understand Bachmann’s rationale with its OO releases. More 9Fs, more 158s, more 37s… I’d have thought the market was saturated with them by now. But still no more 47s - a green with FYE would be really useful for the steam/diesel transition period and into the 70s to go with recent green and blue 40s and blue 47s. Perhaps the 37s - and the BR suburbans - are being prioritised to sell their versions before the Accurascale equivalents appear. In which case please hurry up Heljan with your new 47.

I was expecting some more Bulleid coaches to capitalise on their new tooling - a 15” window 3-set in BR(S) green and/or a diagram 2406 BCK would have gone down very well - but clearly they’re not a priority.

I agree. A Bulleid 10" &15" FK in BR(S) green is a big hole in their lineup too!

  5. Much the same as everyone else, mine arrived about 25m ago and she's a PEACH. Incredible slow-running performance. Rails of Sheffield and Dapol have done very well here; I a happy customer. Now for some 'real' coal, delicate weathering to take away the 'plastic' look and, as @Forester says, tone down those coupling rods a touch!

  6. Are there yet any updates on this K Class kit? Specifically with photos? I was absolutely gutted to have missed out on attending Tonbridge but remain most keen on learning as much as possible since intend to buy a K as soon as possible.

I may hold off a decision until I see the forthcoming PDK K Class but, if this iteration is as good as is claimed, perhaps not!

  7. Hi all,

    First post for me!

I'm trying to source a ground-mounted and platform-mounted LBSCR Stroudley-style water crane in 4mm, as one each of those are what were installed at Heathfield on the Cuckoo Line. Predictably, I've found the perfect products in 7mm scale over at Ragstone Models (see picture below) but have had no luck at all in 4mm. Apparently Mike's Models used to make a whitemetal kit but these have not been available for some time.

Does anyone know of anyone offering these in 4mm?

    Thanks in advance,

    James
