This was the reponse I had from Hornby to my point about the need for a second powered NDM for the full rake

The 7 car APT set is sold with 1x motorised NDM unit, and one is enough to power that set, as sold. When looking to extend the train beyond this, it is advisable to purchase another motorised NDM. The one we had for sale alongside the original 7 car set is R3948. This has now sold out, but can be purchased from other retailers online, subject to availability.

My argument is that on the box it lists the extra coaches with reference numbers to make this a 14 car set. The extra powered NDM is not listed so I reckon this is misrepresentation. I should be able to return it under Distance Sellinig Regulations but that would not apply to the intermediate cars which which were bought by me and sold by the retialer in good faith in a seprate transaction. There is nothing wrong with them (igore capacitor issues) but why should the retailer take them back.

So I am left with the option of having to buy a powered NDM which Hornby have sold out of as has every other retaler I contacted meaning I have to pay an over inflated privce of £133 and wait until at least October and then the model is not the R3948 version its got a different running number so is inappropraite for the set. Yes I know I can change them but I think its wrong to be told after spending approx £900 for a 14 car set that they recommend another powered NDM before I can use it as such.

This is poor customer service and mighht have been avoided with proper testing and not that train set test rack Hornby use as seen on 'Hornby a model World'.

And then what do I do with a on powered NDM surplus to requirements!

In closing I am aware they are available on Ebay but I refuse to pay £179 (at the lastest lisitng) so somebody can make a quick buck.

Hornby need to up their game

The extra coaches to make the 14 car set was also listed on the Hornby website when I made the initial order (which was apparently 8th January 2020?!) - they didn't advise then that another motorised NDM would be needed so I share your annoyance here as I'd have ordered an extra motorised NDM at the time if they had

  2. It's a shame, but I guess not surprising, that Hornby have used their normal packaging for the test train coach pack rather than go for a design complimenting that of the test train.

If anyone from Hornby is reading this I'd be interested in buying some sort of special packaging for the test train and its coaches.

  3. I am sorry if I come across happy, but I am.

Rocket, APT and the LNER 800 for me - if the Hornby site ever catches up. Though as others have said, the LNER 'Celebrating Scotland' timing could have worked better for them - I'll probably cancel my preorder of their delayed initial LNER 800.

  4. I see (from my impatient browse of the Hornby website this morning) that the LNER 'Azuma' release has now slipped all the way to December 2019 - the new GWR versions due May 2019.

Test Train Coach pack still June 2019.

So how about you use your viewer to watch the layout.  The train arrives at the station and the doors open (already possible on a few models) but now you AR passengers disembark and passengers on the platform get on the train.

Exactly - there's endless possibilities. Looking into this a bit more and (no real surprise I guess) Lego have recently introduced AR:

  6. I think adb968008's initial point, that Hornby should consider Augmented Reality (AR) as the more natural progression, shouldn't be forgotten/lost in the VR chat.

There is a commercial partnership, Hornby and Warner Bros, that is ideally suited to this and the age demographic - if an iPhone/iPad app that supplements these sets, and populates the physically built model railway and trains with augmented wizards and animated stories, is what it takes to get the next generation interested in model railways then I'm all for it (and I'll only demand about 5% of future profits for waiving my intellectual property rights on this particular idea)

  7. I'm not gonna get bogged down in the name debate but I'm really pleased to see the LNER model, its expensive but the GWR one I fitted sound to for someone earlier in the year was excellent, I can't wait to have my own which is the correct region for my layout. It appears to only be available through the Hornby website this one meaning theres no chance of a discount! I bet its popular though.
