  1. All that image of the J36 shows, is that they have had the loco running, it has been placed back on the track and moved backwards during the process, leading to the rear wheel rotating slightly. The ungeared axle always rotate more than the geared axle. You have a problem with that Dugald?

My whole point is that they should have ensured it was straight - why wasn't that shot taken immediately after the first one I wonder?

And thank you Jason for your support.

  2.

Now this.......You seem blithely to ignore the obvious and that is that its purpose is to let us in to the model development process and to encourage comment on what we as enthusiasts see.Comment should ideally be constructive and take into account that these are NOT the finished articles soon to be arriving. This I am sure you already know but it has not stopped you from making an the injudicious declamation that they should not have released such an image and then loftily insinuating that your standards are higher than the experienced members of this forum who have recently posted.

If Hornby show us images not to your taste on The Engine Shed either accept what you see warts and all or else don't bother to look if it offends your sensibilities.

So Freedom of Speech is not an option then?

I give praise where it is due - I have both emailed Hornby, and verbally thanked Simon Kohler at Glasgow, and mentioned it in other fora for offering the J36.

We can all interpret things differently - I stand by my comments.

  3. Why? It's an EP... EP samples are known to have parts fitted loosely or not fitted properly. That's the whole purpose of an EP, to check how parts fit. And then if the EP is handled too much, things get loose.

What a pity you had to remark uselessly about an EP

Upon the fact that you don't seem to understand that EP samples are those that are usually hurriedly put together and basically to check the fit of all the parts. That EP probably isn't a running one so the people putting it together won't worry too much about quartering. When they need to have it running someone will fix that. It does no harm apart from raise comments like yours which was absolutely of no use.

Be happy they are showing us EP samples and not hiding the entire development process.

This seems to boil down to a question of standards.  The top Hornby photo shows the left side coupling rods to be perfectly acceptably aligned.

The bottom photo totally detracts from the top two and I certainly would not have released it in that condition.

And, quite simply, that is the pity of it!

There again we all have different standards .

  4. Think it's pretty obvious to all that the J36 is an EP. I think the ES confirm this as being the case.

Precisely!  So what evidence is there that some people don't seem to realise that?

  5. the above is taken from the Waverley Route Heritage Archive......hope it is some help...R

Thanks Ross - that is one of the few photos I have already managed to find.

The RCTS photo PHW0903 and plate 120 of Roger Siviter's "Waverley" are the only others I have, but none of them show the rear.

'Somehow think I'm going to have to use Rule 1!

  6. Has anybody ever seen a photo of (or can recall having actually seen) the side of the "covered shed" structure running along the raised wagon line?

Did the planking on that whole side structure drop all the way down to "ground" level, or was it similar to the side running along the loco coaling line (i.e. was it open-sided from "ground" level up to "coaling" level, with just the supporting structural timbers on view)?

  7. Here is 65331 at Hawick at the head of what seems to be a single coach - however the headlamp code suggests other than a passenger train, and the coach doesn't suggest Inspection Saloon.

(I'm sorry that I do not know the pedigree of the photo, and if it's yours then apologies (now correctly spelt!) for not seeking permission, and congratulations on a lovely photo,)

  8. I agree with some previous comments on here. The replies are far more interesting than the announcements. It does sadden me though, and makes me worry for the future of the hobby (ie. Railway "modelling") that so many responders are dissatisfied because a loco is not the number or livery/crest they would have liked. You could always change it!!!!!!!

After all there is plenty of advice on this site about how to go about it, and think of the fun you'd have, the skill you'd develop etc etc.

I totally agree - I simply cannot get excited about "new liveries", "new tooling" etc..  (I do however appreciate those comments to the effect of "not my cup of tea, but I'm pleased for you".)

I crave genuine "new" models that have not appeared previously in any form, and am only so delighted that the J36 is being produced.  May it be the first of many ex NBR/LNER to come!

  9. I've had a July date as well, (but never got an August one).

I was very pleasantly surprised to see how far advanced the EP's are (Post 7) and look forward even more to what is available for viewing at Model Rail Scotland.

  10. As you will know from the DCV there were only 2 daily booked V2 workings each way in 1953.

Of the 2 Up trains 575 was banked and 557 only 25 minutes later wasn't.

Of the 2 Down trains 767 wasn't banked from Newcastleton but 618 some 61 minutes later was.

I don't know what year is involved in the instances you quote, but it certainly explains why in 1953 you could have "conflicting" photos (albeit in the dark at 22.20 off Hawick).

    Why not go for 1953?!

Alternatively perhaps later years' WTT's will clarify matters?

  11. PS, does anyone know if Oxford even read this, or should I email them directly?

    John

I wrote to them in June 2016 pleading for a J36 & D30, and received the following reply:

"Thanks you for your email. We’ve a planned release programme covering the next 5 years or so, but I’m afraid we never share that until we have moved into an advanced stage of development."

  12. Telerail  Steam World Archive Experience Special Sample Programme -  Special 3 (Bar Code 5 01939 110257) has a couple of minutes feature on the Waverley Route including a couple of trains passing by Hawick coaling stage.
