  1. Hi.

Was hoping someone might be able to advise on a problem I've been having with a print?

No matter what angle and layer height I print at I have been getting these lines on the sides of the coaches.

I am using Anycubic Black with a Photon and have tried .02 to .05 layer heights at various angles, even happened when I printed flat on the bed.

    Thanks in advance

    Dan

    Hi Dan.

Not bad for a first print!

I've been using Phrozen ABS like grey resin almost exclusively of late and I'm very happy with it, but Resin can be a subjective thing and others will have different favourites!

You may wish to experiment by adding a sacrificial skirt to the wagon, one that can be removed after printing. I've become a big fan of this as it helps keeps bottom edges nice and straight and keeps most of the heavy supports off the model. It does add a little extra printing time but I think that's a decent trade off!

Please keep posting your print and interesting layout you are building!

    Tom.

    Thanks Tom

Yes it is a very subjective question as to a good resin.

Had read about the skirts. Are these added in the slicer. I have been using the supplied one which doesn't seem to have that option or do I need a better Chitubox?

I found the small branch line with military connections subject interesting and have plans for a number of rolling stock ideas, unfortunately I haven'y started a build thread on the layout on the forum, yet.

The Anycubic Black is a bit thinner than the grey, I’ve had good luck with it.

    Hi Gareth?

You mention its thinner. Have you had to alter many of the settings for printing, Amazon does have the Black option in stock?

  3. After admiring the work and trying to absorb the knowledge shared I have recently worked on my first fusion 360 project.

I am modelling Bordon Station, in Hampshire, which served the local villiage and the troops at the Longmoor Military Railway.

Rolling stock for the LMR isnt readily available and after doing some research I planed to replicate these, which going by the running number they had a number of.

    qsyPfvh.jpg

After many hours and some choice language I came up with this in Fusion.

    rlld9bX.jpg

So prints were then sent to my Photon and various x and y axis angles, layer thicknesses and exposure times were tried.

    1F6fRIT.jpg

Still not sure on the best outcome and Ive run out of primer to put a quick coat get a less transparent green result.

Unfortunately I am also running low on the Resin and have seen mentioned that the Anycubic grey seems to be popular, but is currently out of stock at Amazon. Has anyone else used different resins with results they were happy with?

Thanks in advance and thanks again for the advice/knowledge thats already been shared.

  4. Hope its okay to share my current project.

After aquiring some coach stock for the Longmoor shuttle services on my build of Bordon I have started my first ever scratch build of a suitable loco to run them.

An ex LNWR 2-4-2T which was given the name Ealrs Roberts whilst in service and this is my progress so far.

I have no experience of these particular etches, but I have built several coaches and locos from etches which were produced from artwork designed  (pre- CAD and so hand-drawn to 10mm scale) originally for 7MM.  They had already been successfully reduced to 4mm scale.  It is important that the thickness of metal used is reduced proportionately to the reduction in scale.  For example the ones I have were etched in 15thou brass for 4mm scale and 8thou for 2MM.  Apart from some items being too small and fiddly (droplight leathers and ash trays for example!), they worked very well,  with all the detail of the original there.

    Thanks for the advice Jim.

As I've still been unable to find an finished examples of these particular models I will pass on these etches and wait for Chris at Masterclass to receive his carcasses for his GWR toplights which I have read and been informed are very good etches by many sources.

Back to the point rodding it is then.

  6. Was hoping someone could advise if they have ever built a coach kit from Frogmore. I believe they are shrunk down versions of their 4mm etches.

I was wondering if they loose to much detail over an etch that was designed for 2mm?

I need a break from doing my point rodding as those single stools could lead a person to drink (a lot) and I have found some for sale that could suit for the Longmoor rolling stock.

    Thanks in advance

The Mastercraft models are lovely models if you can get them. Your other option is to keep your eye on eBay, where older less usual models appear from time to time, these sometimes include toplights.

If you do get the Worsley Works one just remember that it is not a full kit, so you will need to get the other bits together.

    Thanks @Kris

Worsley only produce them in 2mm in the later non panel sided version but he has said they could be made up in N so have that as an option, in hindsight with the amount of rolling stock I am having to build think I should have tried 2mm rather than N but its my first layout so live and learn.

Have, on another forum, been directed to a topic on rmweb about how a forum user builds N gauge coaches, including the Masterclass toplights, so am reading through that.

    Thanks again

  8. Hi All

As the title says. I am after some GWR toplight coaches to convert to run on Bordon. The War department acquired 9 GWR 'toplight' ambulance coaches which were sent to the Longmoor Military Railway which were split into 2 sets and used for passenger services.

Having a search on the forum reveals that Masterclass Models might do what I am looking for but from their website the last update was back in 2011. Last month I ordered from Etched Pixels the sides for a GWR 57ft Toplight (UMCSG1204), as well as some other items, so might have an answer but was wondering if anyone could advise on any other options?
Have also emailed Worlsey Works but I believe their version is the later one, but he was more than helpful and said his 2mm etches could be made into N.

    Thanks in advance

  9. @Geddi, I would be interested to know how you set about doing the transfers for the LMR.

I have the three volume book series on the LMR as well as a couple of others which help greatly when it comes to rolling stock as for my first ever layout I am modelling the Bordon branchline which had the exchange sidings for the LMR, albeit in N gauge.

  10. You could have a faulty loco, or at least a loco fault which only shows itself on DCC.   Don't rule that out yet.

CV30=4 implies a motor short circuit.   There are two types of these, either the internal wiring of the motor is at fault, or there is a current path from motor terminals to the chassis pickups (seen that happen several times, and with cheaper decoders that's bye-bye-decoder time).    Or, there is a possibility that the internals of the decoder have shorted, but the decoder sees it as a motor short.    In theory, you can clear the report of a short by writing 0 to CV30.

CV8 will always READ the value of the manufacturer ID.   So, whilst you can write a value to cause a reset, it doesn't change the value you can read back.

Diagnosis from where you are -

    1)  Try the decoder in another loco, or at least with a motor rigged up to its motor output leads to see if it works following a reset.   If it doesn't work, then the chip is blown.  But, you need to find out why it blew, they don't generally blow randomly.

    2)  If you have a multimeter, check that there are no paths from motor wires to the pickups of the loco.  If either side shows a path, then that's your fault and it must be corrected.

    3)  When refitting any decoder into this loco (or any other), you should put the PowerCab into Programming Track mode (first), and only then place the loco on the track and attempt to read a CV.     If you can't reliably read CV values back, there is a fault in the loco / installation that needs correcting BEFORE you attempt to give it track power.

Thanks Nigel for coming to my aid, again.

Have tried the decoder just by itself as shown.

    post-31166-0-11874900-1496052416_thumb.jpg

but still get CV30 as 4 after a reset.

    post-31166-0-95104800-1496052418_thumb.jpg

Had checked the wiring when on the loco and had no shorts from motor wires to pickups so will assume that the decoder is at fault but am at a loss for the cause of blowing.

As well as the rolling road I have a little test loop, for a programming track, which I use before putting them onto the main track.

  11. Wondering if anyone could advise?

I have installed a Lenz Silver into a Union Mills Loco and last night all was running well. However I am now stuck as today it has refused to do anything.

I can communicate with the decoder via JMRI but noticed CV30 was showing 4. I could not see any shorts and during the day have removed it from the loco and the motor runs fine, powered via DC. Have also linked the chip up, to a rolling road without the motor, to see if it still communicate, which it does, but is still showing CV30 as 4. I have tried to write it to 0 and am unable to carry out a system reset as it won't let me change CV8 to 33, but have also tried with my NCE control direct and this does reset the chip.

Being new to DCC I am wondering if I have a fault chip or a faulty operator.

    Thanks in advance.

    Dan
