  1. Good morning all

The bogies are a problem. There is much discussion as to which bogies were replaced by 10ft heavy bogies.

The Isinglass drawings show 10ft HD bogies fitted on the restaurant triplet and 8ft6ins HD bogies for the rest.

Isinglass drawings also show 10ft HD bogies fitted as middle bogies on the Coronation twins which included a kitchen, with 8ft 6ins HD bogies for the rest.

I don't know of any supplier for the 10ft version of the HD bogies.

I suppose that one could "cut and shut" two cosmetic 8ft 6ins HD bogies, and fit them to a 10ft bogie frame as supplied by Dart castings.

A very interesting and informative thread.

  2. Good morning all

I echo the sentiments about Dave Ellis and SEF.

He is very helpful, and has been known to known to produce one-off castings of ex-Nucast kits, if the mould are in good shape.

  3. The beat up O4 has been on sale for at least three years.

Originally over £200 and slowly dropping.

If we wait until 2030, it might fall to a reasonable price.

  4. Good morning all

I think the NC108T tender must refer to the tender supplied with the J6.

If my memory is right, it was a GNR type A tender.

The Kays J3 kit was originally supplied with the Type B Atlantic Tender.

Later J3s produced by NuCast had the type A tender as had been supplied with the Cotswold Q1.

  5. Hello Skaran

I think GCR coaches are a bit thin on the ground. There are probably a few expensive etched kits, but I don't know of any budget examples.

The old Triang/Hornby Clerestorys can be easily converted to represent GCR clerestorys built c1900-1910.

A Chocolate and French grey repaint gives a reasonable representation. If the grabrails are replaced, they look even better.

  6. However it does have Ratio bogies so that may have thrown the seller...........

The Ratio Clerestory kits make up into a reasonable model. I cannot see the advantage of fitting Ratio bogies to a Hornby (ex-Triang) coach. The Ratio bogies would need new wheels as the plastic ones provided with the kits are useless.

I have bashed several Hornby Clerestorys into GCR and NER coaches and they run well with Hornby bogies (I think they represent BR Mk1). A few seconds work with a modelling knife can convert them into a Fox bogie look-alike.

  7. Good morning all

I get great pleasure from building kits, and hopefully I am able to do so for many years to come.

However, the cost of building a model is unlikely to recouped if it is sold on.

The detail in R-T-R models is so good these days, that it is difficult to match, but putting my hand in my pocket to buy a R-T-R loco does not provide the hours of pleasure and sometimes frustration that I get from building one myself.

  8. The Silver Jubilee train consisted of articulated carriages.

    Brake third/first

    Restaurant triplet

    Third/Brake first

I cannot see any articulated carriages in the advert.
