  1. Whilst on the topic of extra lamp irons. Any ideas as to why 8745 had a different style of the additional SR brackets as pictured? It appears these were placed on the smokebox door as opposed to the tanks. Was this an isolated case or were there a few like this? Anyone seen any images of this loco's (or one with the same style of brackets) bunker to see the placement there?

edit.. it was running until c2014 with tender 2629, but now looks to be 2206.

2629 now seems to be with 9351.

Preserved tenders are a minefield with several rebuilt in preservation.

2629 is a Collett 3000g which 7828 ran with for the 2018 Christmas specials and for the 2019 season only.

She still runs with 2206 currently. I am not sure if it has had a new tank in preservation - I don't believe so since being at the WSR. It has been missing the tender dome since it returned to steam in 2011 so it appeared to have lost it during that overhaul. It will be gaining a different tender soon which is a riveted body on narrow hornplate frames - number 2061. Currently under restoration (with brand new tank) in Minehead works

Are there many differences between Odney manor and the production run of Torquay manor? Looking at a renumber job I think.

    Congratulations!

To model 7828 as she is currently in preservation I'm using a 7812 donor but swapping over the tender chassis with another of my Manors. This is to get the flush sided tender body with the narrow hornplate frames, a combination Accurascale haven’t done in the 1st batch.

It depends how picky you want to be but a minor detail on 7828's tender is that it is missing the water scoop dome at the rear of the coal space. You can see it's missing here https://images.app.goo.gl/dHvohCnWSY9WLXQL9

I'm sure however far you decide to take it, the finished model will be a great momento of the occasion.

Another comment on the Accurascale vs Dapol debate which I don't believe has been mentioned yet - it appears that Dapol have only tooled up the 1950s batch of boilers meaning on their GWR liveried examples you have firebox side washout plugs in the wrong places (and an extra one). Accurascale have tooled up both types. Whether this matters to you is down to how fussy you are! I am pleased I waited for Accurascale's example.

  4. These are looking absolutely smashing, top work as usual chaps.

I'm very much looking forward to my order of 7 arriving - fingers are firmly crossed for a delivery before my Birthday at the end of the month!

Before I go to order etched name and numberplates for renumbering, could someone from Accurascale please confirm if etched nameplates are included in the accessory pack? Many thanks in advance :-)

    Hi @mdvle?

If this is in reference to different placed washout plugs we intend on doing both. Sorry if I did not confirm this previously.

    HTH.

Apologies, I made the assumption they were all 1938 boilers in the 1st batch based on a FB PM to yourself. That's good news. Am I still correct in assuming all the first batch are fitted with the 1938 boilers and if not which is which?

    Thanks

Strangely, for such a small quantity of Number 14 boilers, there are two variants for the washout plug line - 'high' and 'low'.

For those intending to model preserved locos in their present day condition, all but one 78XX carry 1938 built boilers which is the one Accurascale are tooling I believe.

The exception is 7827 which carries a 1950 built boiler, hence modelling this in preserved condition is difficult.

7819, 7820 and 7821 are currently coupled to tenders that they aren't tooling up (completely fair enough, they're all different). Also 7802 is difficult to model in the condition it has run for the majority of its preserved life because of the Collett 4000g tender.

7822 has a bit of a hybrid tender with the top fenders rivetted and the rest flush.

Having done a bit of research I'm hoping to use the table illustrated as donor locos for my preserved modelling. Hope this helps anyone else, and if I've made any mistakes please correct me!

I find this thread very interesting! I even have some preserved examples in my 00 Gauge Pre-Grouping Steam collection. So, which preserved steam, diesel or electric locomotive do you like the most?

Thanks for the interest, my favourite steam loco is 7820 Dinmore Manor, so much so that I have 2 Bachmann models of her and have ordered 3 of the new Dapol ones to replace those and cover the main 3 liveries she has carried in preservation (BR lined Black, BR unlined Black and BR lined Green)

My favourite diesel is probably the Hymeks, I have two of these.

Unfortunately I don't really have an interest in Electric traction

  8. Recent project of mine has been to convert the Hornby model of Stepney in A1 condition to preserved condition, heavily inspired by Matt Wickham and his Bluebell Model Railway. Using his conversion kit the job was much easier than I anticipated, the scariest bit being the taking a hacksaw to it to remove the A1 smokebox. The photo below shows the loco before modification.

    20200515_184548

After removal of handrails and pipes and chimney carefully removed to reuse.

    20200515_185030

After many modifications including but not limited to the following:

    - New smokebox

    - Dome moved forward to represent later boiler

    - Lots of new pipework on the boiler

    - Lubricator pots added to front of tanks

    - Coal Rails added to bunker

    - Cab window rails added

    - Air pump removed

    - Cabside Number plate transfers from Precision Labels added

    20200623_182000 20200623_182126

After these pictures were taken I've added steam heat and vacuum pipes and real coal. A fairly straightforward project which I have enjoyed doing and leaving me with a suitable locomotive for a future preserved railway layout.

Many thanks for viewing, any questions feel free to ask.

  9. Hi all,

I dabble in a bit of preserved modelling. I currently lack the space for a layout but have been using the lockdown as an opportunity for catching up with the locomotive and carriage fleet. My collection spans a vast number of regions and locos and so there is always something different to be working on. Being a fairly young volunteer at the WSR, my soft spot is for Western Region locos. Having been inspired by this forum for many of my locos I thought I'd return the favour hopefully to inspire others.

I'll start off with a few past projects undertaken.

One of my recent challenges has been to bring the Heljan 47xx Night Owl up to standard. This involved a fair bit of work including a full repaint and renumber but I'm happy with the results as seen below. Apologies for the photo quality!

I've also been going through my fleet and ensuring they all have real coal, a crew and lamps/discs.

    20200503_140846 20200503_140835

Subtle bits of weathering applied to P Class Bluebell to represent the loco as she ran at the SVR Autumn gala in 2017.

    20200503_161837

A4 60009 Union of South Africa originally a single chimney example has been renumbered, detailed and weathered, appearing as she did in c.2018/19 where the loco was working so intensively there was limited time to clean her.

Currently working on a A1 to A1X conversion on a Hornby Stepney, 3 x Hornby Castles and a GW H33 Diner (Not strictly preserved but to run in BR(W) displays on the WSR layout of which I'm an operator). Pics to follow...

    Any questions ask away!
