  1. Again, the question should have been "Why do publically funded projects go so badly over budget?" Given that most of them are strategically important, it's a question that needs sorting.
  2. Didn't the The Midland bring forward a bill to abandon the Settle and Carlisle, after a running powers agreement with the LNWR, but the bill was later withdrawn; or am I confused. There's been some eedjit on Faceache claiming that HS2 never gained parliamentary approval.
  3. Well, I heard a bit of it, and it was a well reasoned piece!
  4. Nearly had a job with them, in 1969. Engineer cadet. It got as far as telling me to reoport to Riversdale College in Liverpool, but I failed a couple of 'O' levels, and that was that!
  5. What's the referendum about? Always a blunt instrument, IMHO
  6. One might be "Get it built in full, in scope, and we'll take it from there". At least build phase 1 in full, from Euston to Handsacre
  7. No, it's not! When was the last time you were there?
  8. The point I was trying to make was that in both world wars, no matter who or what did what beforehand, the government ran the state, in the second world war in a very socialist manner; conscription, rationing, direction of resources, direction of labour, etc. So to imply that private enterprise won the wars is wrong. Neither would private enterprise survive for very long without support from, and cooperation with, government
  9. Being as in both world wars, the state was run by the government, I'm not sure what you're on about, there!
  10. I take it that £22.5bn is over the total length of the project so far, i.e. about 13 years, with most going out over the last four or five? So let's say £3bn or £4bn a year at the moment; it's chicken feed really.
  11. I'm sure in BP, the cook on the asian - crewed ships was called a Bhandary; at least the one for the crew was. They cooked legendary curries! As opposed to Stricks, I suppose BP, like the other oil companies, traded the other way round to Stricks; in ballast to the Gulf, loaded back, when they weren't engaged on other trades. One I was on seemed permanently to be trading from the Gulf to Kwinana, near Perth W.A.
  12. On the naming of British Merchant ships, one thinks of Alfred Holt sitting in his hammock reading The Oddyesy (aprocryphically); or Shell naming their ships after.....shells! I think the British (RN and MN) were generally more imaginative in ship names...although it could lead to embarassment at times
  13. Bit of an unfortunate name for the train, IMHO!
  14. I doubt very much that they have spent that much money on anything yet, no? That's the guess at the final cost of the project, which has somehow been conflated with total spend so far.
  15. I thought this thread was going to be about the half - dozen Kylchap - fitted locos stationed at various points down the ECML in the early 60s to cover against diesel loco failures😁
  16. That's not the point, is it? Without the free travel, I would either have had to drive, or not gone at all (given the result of the first match, I wish I hadn't!😬). My taxes pay for a lot of things, some of which I don't use, but which make life in general liveable, e.g. education, or social services, so I'll stick with it, thank you
  17. No; these would be the trains from further north that use the WCML now, e.g., Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, etc. The idea is to remove these from there onto HS2, thus opening the existing lines to more semi - fasts and freight.
  18. Does the North West trains, or whatever they call themselves, service from Liverpool/Crewe, down the Trent Valley still run? It's services like this that would benefit from HS2, isn't it? You could double the frequency of the trains; Build it and they will come!
  19. Again; Birmingham is on a branch, no? The end of HS2 phase 1 is a junction with the existing WCML near Handsacre, several miles north - east of that city. That Junction enables trains from further north to join HS2. The though that the line is just Birmingham - to/from London is another misrepresentation by the media (all of them, print and televised).
  20. Or, for that matter, to run a local commuter service to the same frequency as in done, Manchester - London. At the moment, it half - hourly on my local line; I believe it's back to three an hour to London. Moving those long - distance trains to a separate station would mean the platforms at present taken up by them would become available for the semi-fasts and locals.
  21. Been there; done that! Even when you're "drawing" at a CAD terminal, it can be fairly confusing! It's the sort of thing I had in mind.
  22. 1) We aren't all wfh; 2) Where are we being asked, or forced, to give up travelling? 3) Most long - distance rail journeys aren't for commuting to work
