Would it be possible to draw a distinction between the retail traders with  lots of RTR to sell, and the likes of 247 Developments, who aren't necessarily going to turn a huge amount of money over a weekend, but do provide a useful range of hard to find bits for the kitbuilder or scratchbuilder?

    That's something to consider :)

Numbers through the door (whether at model railway exhibitions or elsewhere) is not a great guide to what the spend will be - especially for the more specialist traders.

I know the only real way for something like this to work would be to use the takings of the trader as a guide, low sales, low stand price, good sales higher stand price. But you can not expect trader to say what they have taken and there would be a lot of trust involved which is why I chose door numbers as a thought.

I do not know of any show wear the traders do not pay anything

apart for some very small shows were its a donation

As a trader would you be interested in a stand cost that reflected the numbers through the door, ie a fixed min-cost for poor numbers through the door if that cheap cost was cheap enough stepping up and the door number went up to a max cost for a good turn up as long as that cost was not too expensive.

Just a thought I have been playing with, it would mean both the trader and show organisers would be taking a gamble.

In relation to Mozzer's comment above, would the traders at the Cardiff exhibition also be paying  a rent for their stall, or is that only applicable at the larger shows?

Yes all the traders pay rent for the space they take up, but if it gets us better traders we may have to look at the charges, if we have to lower the charges to get the right traders then that's something we will have to consider
