I think I used a scalpel blade to gently prize them out

Well I got one in the sale as an early Christmas present! And I must say when I ran her on my test track she ran faultlessly.
I'm very impressed with the running and the level of detail.
I only operate on DC.

My layout is in a 8x6 unheated shed so all my locos, coaches & wagons get to come in the house at the end of the day.

Hi all my name is Dave.
I'm new on here However I've been building model railways for a long time!

Bachmann class 04 running erratically with smoke from the motor !

You could try dipping the motor in methylated spit and letting it dry off.
I did this to my Bachmann Standard 4MT tank and it ran great after.
