  1. As Jim says, it’s up to you, but in the interest of getting something running, why should this bother you? You can always replace the RTP structures with hand built models later. You have been quite prepared to use 00 gauge and RTR stock even though it would be a much greater effort to change to P4 in the future, so where is your problem? I found that once my kids were sleeping through, I had a fair number of evenings in and got quite a bit of modelling done. “You go out and catch up with your friends, dear. I don’t mind staying in and looking after the baby. No, really, it’s not a problem at all.”

  4. Ah, but you will know it’s there, and this level of detail and craftsmanship whilst subtle, does “lift” the layout - as long as that is done to the same standard… ;)
  5. That is often a hard thing to convey (successfully, at any rate!) on a freelanced station placed into a real place*. I lived for many years on Oakham, and when the station was built, not only was the town a lot smaller, but most of it was to the east of the station. The town has grown over the decades** - an a lot more quickly recently - and rather than being conveniently located so that the level crossing only affects travellers coming in from the west, and not affecting the residents at all, it is now a pain in the proverbial for the locals. * I have always liked the idea/concept behind Iain Rice’s “Clun”, but feel it is one of his least successful designs as he has compressed the real space too much, and there is too much twist in the track plan (which is essentially Bishop’s Castle with the goods and carriage sheds relocated). ** For some reason, no matter when they were built, houses on the western side of the railway seem to have smaller plots/gardens than those on the eastern side. If you like space/gardening, then the eastern side of town is definitely the wrong side of the tracks, but in truth, it’s a pretty pleasant place to live. Meant to say, I think you are doing a great job there, MR. Wolf.

I have been advised that wherever there is a right angle, or indeed any angle between straight lines, to use separate lines, but if there is a curvature between the lines, to do it as a single line. Still haven’t got around to using the cutter I bought 3 years ago, during which time there has been a couple of house moves and the building of a log cabin, and now I have another move impending!

  10. What will Miss RRH become a Doctor of? I had a teacher who used to quote his father’s advice: “Don’t go chasing for letters after your name. It the ones in front which impress people.” But there are very few titles which are gained through merit, so Dr. is the best.

I once pointed out to a colleague who used the phrase, “not one to call a spade an agricultural shovelling instrument” that a spade and a shovel are actually slightly different things, with a different shape and purpose. I won’t repeat his comment, as the censor will delete it all. As for “straight talking”, there is clear, honest and respectful communication, and then there is rudeness pretending to be that. Being rude is being rude. I don’t have a problem with that, as long as people are honest enough with themselves to admit it and not portray it as a virtue.

I just think that at one extreme, there is the entire population of human beings, and at the other, a population of individual human beings, and that life is easier if we treat each other with the appropriate amount of respect, which increases the less we know someone else: if you don’t know someone well enough to know where their boundaries lie, then be more respectful. Conversely, the better you know someone, the more you are (usually) able to joke about things, as we tend to on here despite many of us never having met, as we all start with an interest in the hobby. I dislike the current concept of being offended on some other group’s perceived behalf: that’s arrogant and patronising, but I am aware that certain words and phrases are just generally offensive, and steer clear of using them.
  16. Verisimilitude, that’s all. Mentally separate the functions that are performed by separate individuals on the prototype during the pregrouping era. As for Buckingham’s approach with DC, I accept that this works, but I think I misread that William was talking about keeping the wiring complexities of such an approach for DCC, whereas maybe he meant sticking with DC?
  17. Oh dear. Not, IMO, making any sense at all. On the real railway, the driver has to obey the signals, which give an indication of route and permission. If he doesn’t, then at best, he (or she) gets reported for a spad, but could also derail and or cause an accident. What you are suggesting removes that from the operations. To me, one great benefit of DCC is that if you wish, you can divorce the supply of power to sections from everything else, and by using frog juicers, can replicate the prototype by running against turnouts. You can still use DCC to control signals and points, of course, but that is just the operation of them. You could also use mechanical rodding, wire-in-tube, string and elastic bands or whatever. The same benefits apply to operating by battery power using radio, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth, or even clockwork. Using the rails and signals to confer power is “railway modelling thinking”. Another benefit of DCC is constant power supply, leading to better running.

  19. Similar to people who claim not to be phobic/“-ist”, on the basis that they are offensive to everyone with targeting any specific characteristic (protected under law or not). In reality, they are just offensive, not offensive without prejudice. Still, at least you know where you stand.
  20. Which I noticed after posting! I am more interested in using etchings and printing, than 3D printing alone, so I will wait…
  21. The problem with a turntable acting as loco release is that if it is out of order, then operations get complicated and a pilot loco is required. That’s even worse if the turntable needs to be enlarged, as it will be out of commission for some time, so when that is required, it is relatively easy to remove the table, fill in the pit, and install pointwork over a weekend. Plus, tank engines were becoming more common by then, and increasingly used without turning, so in many cases it wasn’t so much moving the turntable, as removing it completely.

  24. I can’t think of any inner city examples, but the SER station in Bromley ended in a turntable. This may have been a branch in prototype terms, but it was double track and in (then) outer London. Talking of the SER, although deviating substantially from Minories, there was Margate Sands.
