  1. Ian, also worth checking the outer rails as they have an area machined out to accept the point blade, and this weakens them and makes them more likely to distort and jam the tie-bar.... I did see one N layout, which had been moved from a cold damp outbuilding into a very hot centrally heated room, the expansion and shrinkage of the boards managed to destroy 37 sets of Peco points........some of them were bowed up from the boards more than 1/2 an inch ...not good! Regards Trevor........
  2. Roundhouse, re- your problems with points etc..... I have come across this problem in the past several times....as you mention it gets worse as the venue heats up,I would check you have enough expansion gaps...I have known points to very slightly bulge and buckle as the rail expansion puts pressure on them,it does not take much .5mm is enough to cause problems..... the buckling will give problems with the turnout throwing cleanly and derailments... Regards Trevor ...
  3. Very nicely done air of decay ........without overdoing it ...... Regards Trevor....
  4. In the last photo................ Looks like Fred is paddling his way out of s**t creek............... Regards Trevor .....
  5. To get the old wheels out ..you use a drift to punch the old axle through from one side out of the other...the wheels dropping of as the axle is pushed through ..the reverse is required for fitting the new ...ie. the new wheels must be taken off the axles ..the axles fed through and the wheels slid back on and re-gauged ...then as has been said ,the bearings fitted at the end.. Regards Trevor ........
  6. Ray, had a feeling you might already have twigged the dodgy pick-ups ..but worth mentioning anyway ....agree with you totally .. Regards Trevor ..
  7. Ray, first of all may I congratulate you on an excellent looking layout and topic ... Re. Hornby sound 08 ...I have had quite a few of them through the shop and every one suffered from poor pick ups .....there is a great deal of side to side play in the chassis and the pickups have not been factory formed to give enough pressure on the wheels to keep the contact on all, as it moves down the track ...I found that popping the wheelsets out and then some judicious bending outwards of the pickups eventually gave decent running and sound ..hope this is of some help.. Regards Trevor ....
  8. Later on today ..."I shall be mostly.. radioactive"..!

  17. Mick, I will have a look on Saturday when I am next in the shop ...may have 1 or 2 tender chassis ... PS ...just found the same comment Re wagon ...must have been the first type of that wagon as the all steel ones are not branded the same ... Regards Trevor ...
  18. Mick, Some nice work again ... but Re. 13 ton wagons .....as a matter of interest,do you know the reason for the grey wood door one not to work off LNER system ...????? Regards Trevor ...
  19. I think Mike is talking specifically about the Western region + shunters truck.....other areas did use runners for track signalling purposes... Quote from The Lairds "Bradfield" topic....post no.185 Baby Deltic, on 15 June 2011 - 09:35 , said: The runner was to increase the number of wheelsets across the track circuits to ensure they operated correctly. Sometimes small 0-6-0 shunters would disappear off the signalling displays. Stationmaster replied.. Exactly - a particular problem on some ER signalling schemes was that there could be either short track circuits or in some instances short stretches which were not track circuited so the runner in effect extended the wheelbase of the Class 03. Regards Trevor....

  21. Mick, Sparrowhawk looking very good considering the state it was in ...well done .. something for your 4mm passengers to peruse ............. Presume the colours matched the train .....? Regards Trevor ....
  22. Jules, Goods shed corner looks very much improved....more in keeping with the overall look of the layout ... Re the field by the cattle dock ......maybe just a stone barn with a corrugated lean-to ....gives some interest and opportunity for detailing without being too much of a contrived cliche' as a cottage + garden might be ...???? less is more sometimes .. Regards Trevor ...
  23. One of the best run throughs I have seen on how to make a wagon look like it has done some work..........not too much ..not too little ..just Regards Trevor ...
  24. Jules, Excellent layout and thread .....really like the way it has developed...and your mix of wagons is fine !! Re. the problem corner....what about a large feature tree or trees and reduce the width of the roadway and curve it away from the backscene into the goods yard with a fence/hedge and undergrowth in front of the backscene ......this would soften the right angle of the board end and blend in with the more rural nature of the rest of the layout ... just a thought ... Regards Trevor ...
  25. Mick, if you PM your address ......I have a spare bufferbeam section to help restore your poorly A4 ... Regards Trevor ...
