B4 bogies would be wrong for the EPB (there was some that were removed for use with express stock, but these were iirc 2EPB and fitted with commonwealth bogies. For the EPB use the BR1 bogie bolster, if needed the springs can be modified.

Thanks for filling me in about the bogies, I'll get them from replica with the bodies cheesysmith

They only have a preorder available at 10% of the price so I've put a pound down to reserve one

Nick, thanks for the information about the tenshodo motor bogies, I think they're best avoided then and the replica chassis is bit out of my price range unfortunately. It does look rather useful, an all in 1 solution and with a DCC socket for when I do upgrade to DCC

    Thanks for the help everyone

  2. Hi everyone, I'm making myself a BR 4-EPB (set around 1962) from mainly from replica bodies, and im not sure on a what bogies to use, Im currently thinking about replica B4 bogies for the unpowered bogies, they look the best match to me but im not sure on this

For the power bogie Im thinking of a tenshodo motor bogie with Dart Castings B4 sideframes & the unpowered one out of a replica bogie with the same components, anyone have any better ideas for motive power as I cant find a BIL motor bogie anywhere?

    Thanks in advance, Adam

I felt inspired from some of the stuff thats been on here in the last few pages and thought I'd try my hand at coming up with some island variations on minories and some variations while working with streamline points ( despite not owning any yet )

    From top to bottom:
A stream line version of keiths' layout a few pages back, its almost a 1m long but still under 26cm wide so would fit on a billy bookcase shelf
Island with a pilot road in the middle using the peco 3 way points
The middle pilot road somewhat reminds me of woking platform 3 somewhat, you could maybe run a autocoach/ 1 car dmu if you extended the platform around it

Island minories without a pilot road

Added in a pilot road with a y point, I think that an emu would look rather nice curving across this trackwork from the top platform

I had some thoughts about interesting moves while making these, would this have ever happened?
    Loco arrives in platform 2
Pilot brings coaches forward in to the throat, releasing the loco which then moves into the siding via the crossover
Coaches are pushed forward into the platform and pilot moves out of the way and loco runs round

All of this could happen without effecting workings into platform 1, I dont see it happening in the prototype however as the coaches could have quite easily been moved into platform 1. Anyone have any example of this kind of move happening? it feels like it could have happened at a sleepy blt

  4. There's a new Co-Op distribution centre just off the A303 Monxton turning, behind the "Chalkhill Blue" pub if you look on google maps.  That's not quite close enough to the line to be useful.

I'm not refering to The Co-op but instead an actual Co-operative called Go! who were looking at opening the line in around 2011 as a shuttle service into Andover and improving the area generally. I only ever saw a little column in the local newspaper but from what it seems like they have all but given up on the Andover branch. There's only a little footnote on the wikipedia page about it

  5. Im really liking the bridge, with a bit of weathering it might look like the real thing. This is going to be a really nice module when its finished

already being discussed... https://www.spirefm.co.uk/news/local-news/2431425/passenger-train-idea-on-track-for-ludgershall/ … and in my alternate model reality it probably will anyway with either my 170 or a hired in 153 (as happened in Suffolk).

Thats the 2nd time I've heard about the line from Andover to Lugershall being reinstated, I think last time it was a northern Co-op around 2013 who was going to use it but nothing came of it. Though I have no idea about the rest of the track, the part visable from the station up to redpost junction (?) was rather weedy

  6. Progress has been good, the bridge is semi assembled waiting some black paint for the portal which I'll be getting tomorrow. I still don't know what to do with the backscene, it may remain white or I might try some watercolours on it, and paint a sunset/rise.

I'm considering trying drybrushing to a wagon just to dirty them up a bit more and then maybe onto the scenics

  7. I've done a bit more which is worthwhile of an update, grass has been laid (perhaps too early I'm thinking now), the doors fitted and an image for inside incorrectly printed out.

Both of the ends have been decided what they're going to be, the left is a railway bridge and the right is a factory wall with a window. I still need to decide how to do the right wall roof or do I just paint the sky above and forgo a roof there, and do the roof over the main building.

I think buying a scanescenes set might be a worthwhile investment as the canopy doesn't look right, it might be the angle also I need to work out what to put in the gap left by the platform

  8. Interesting, I like the idea! A couple of suggestions; for the "exit", either another warehouse wall with an archway under it (like in this Metcalfe kit), or a plate girder foot/road bridge might work well. I also wonder if buying a short-chain battery-powered white christmas light set might work (e.g. this), as it gives you many more lamps and saves effort. You might have to wait until November to find them in shops though! I look forward to watching this develop.

I like your idea of using christmas lights for the lighting, I'll probably end up using some but as I've all ready ordered some LEDs I'll give hand wiring my own a go. Also I have now settled on a metal bridge over the top as the exit

  9. I started a small static diorama on wednesday which will sit on my desk when I'm at uni and unable to play trains (not that it may last long) and also as a first try at scratch building and doing detail work. This is going to be put together rather quickly and cheaply as well, budget being ~£10

Progress has been slow but consistent and I've got a good idea of where I want it to progress and here is the current build log.

Baseboard, made from a random bit of wood (MDF probably) with a cardboard sides

Making up the platform, its just breakfast cereal boxes as thats what I have found around the house

Jumping forward a bit, a length of peco streamline track had been found and cut to length and placed, the wall is breakfast card with metcalfe building paper placed in front, the roof is going to be metcalfe roof card but that might change, I am liking the idea of a second floor . The buffer is a shortened Hornby buffer

First run at ballasting complete and door placement mocked up,the right doors are going to be open with a small view inside I still need to reprint the canopy as I made it too short before I can make it.

I've purchased some warm white LEDs (£1.29) which I want to place underneath the canopy and inside the factory to provide a bit of atmosphere to the build

    Things to do:

Grass on any remaining visable wood,

decide what to do for the exit, I'm thinking of a tunnel portal but it might look out of place

find a backscene for the gap to the left of the platform and the right wall

weathering, I'll think about this when it comes to it

  10. While looking around for inspiration for the shed and era I found this image of the SR (?) basingstoke depot in 1965. It suits the aesthetic that I have in mind for everything, Im currently planning on using a Hornby 2 road engine shed (R8004) and building on top of it with plasticard for the funnels or what ever they're called on top of the shed.

Sounds like an interesting layout. I'll follow with interest. About your joint, you may want to invest in some micro connectors.

Thanks for this tip Luke, I have bought some micro connectors, they are a bit smaller than I was anticipating but they should be alright to use.

Also on the list of purchases was a GEM point lever starter set and 2 more levers from antics for all my points, they'll be used on points 1 and 3 (left to right on the track plan) and I'm planning on using an old H&M 2 way switch for the middle point to switch both the power and track together.

  11. Im not sure if this is the right place for this but here goes.

I've started a small layout/diorama which Ive decided to call "round the back of the sheds". I've planned out the layout already and started building it .

     post-34351-0-41603900-1526130531_thumb.gif

From left to right, parcels depot and headshunt, then 2 lines coming out of a maintenance shed and the feed line into the scene. The green lines are part of the fiddle yard which will be hidden by a scenic break of some sort

Ive started building the layout, it will be DC but im not settled what controller to use so for the time being I'm using a H&M Duette which is a bit overkill. The board splits into 2 in the middle which will make the wiring a bit tricky as I'll need to toggle each line across the split. Add in the fact that I dont have much room to store my layout so the base board is just a board wiring this will be interesting, im just resting it on some wood so I dont squash the wires for now

    post-34351-0-51204900-1526131282_thumb.jpg

For scenicking I'm not sure what to do around where the track rubber is in the above picture, I was thinking some kind of storage, so a grounded goods van or carriage but im not sure. For the parcels depot I'm stumped by what to build there, I cant find any pictures of a dedicated parcels depot not on a station, I dont have much room so it'll have to be quite small.

Progress might be slow as I've got to juggle this, college and work for a bit but Im not sure what will happen in september, I may not have time or room for trains at uni :(

    Thanks for looking
