I was comparing the render of this 158 vs my model of the old one, and honestly it looks very much the same but with slightly improved underframe detail. I think i may be greatly dissapointed by this, especially ay 250 quid....

So, Sorry for the silence of recent on this project, it is not dead! I was moving house, but I have had a small rethink of the immediate future of this layout. I have decided that the final board will infact be a terminus station to give me as much scenic space as possible, while behind the tunnels will be a traverser, this is to make it a 18' x 2' exhibition layout.

So even though I was not born with the old ICS livery I have a theory as to why the colouring looks wrong. Film photography, one of the side effects of film photography vs digital photography is that film makes things naturally warmer. It may be that the Hornby/lima colours were taken from photographs of dirty carriages, looking very yellow vs OR possibly using the correct colour codes. This can be seen in the picture of the original liveried HST power car that was done very recently. All the colours look much brighter than any photos from when they originally launched.
On a side note, I prefer the whiter grey, the darker grey always looked dirty to me even when clean!

Excellent work and its impressive how much you are managing in the timescales. The embankment build up is excellent work and reuse of bits around us. What is the plan beneath the viaduct and what is the plan for the other side of the Viaduct? Are you having some form of storage sidings.
Cheers
Under the viaduct will be a small town scene, featuring a pub, main road, church and a factory, vaguely based on the valleys of yorkshire

So, its been a couple of weeks since i got to do any work on the layout, but this weekend i got a good couple of days doing some work!
Got the bridge stuck down, raised up so there is space for a river!
The embankment is made from a monitor box, its almost the right shape
Added some scatter its not permanent possibly.
Added a frame and table
And a beauty shot

Got hold of the signal box today, as well as the bridge for board two, and honestly I just couldn't wait!!! So I started building, and it's making me very happy!
Made a transition to peco streamline as I was unhappy with the track spacing and sharpness of the Hornby points. The bridge curves slightly backwards so that on the next 2 boards, which will be at right angles, there will be a sweeping right hand curve. Might make it harder to exhibit but will look better in a room!need to try and salvage some more polystyrene because I have an awful lot of landscaping to do!

I like where you're going with this! but I agree with the above comment, gentle curves, otherwise you will get massive gaps between your carriages, and no-one wants that!

Looks good so far. How long has it taken up to now?
So far probably about 5 or 6 days? However I have been doing it sort of on and off between exam revision!
Welcome to the forum its got to be said you've made more progress than me. It looks a good solid start.
Me I just need to stop dreaming and start building
Yeah! I used to have a 20'x8' layout that took most of my bedroom up when I was younger, but it was never really more than a blank baseboard with one hill and a couple of buildings. It got put away in a box and has spent a few years in it, but I decided to get it out a couple of weeks ago and just, do! Nothing worse than thinking about it and not doing. I didn't want to over complicate it too much, and in some ways building it organically represents the real world a little better!
Gonna try and get a signal box and some signals in next i think, And some OHLE, but that I am not looking forward to!

Hello ladies and gents!
First post on the forum, I will be creating a small layout for my own fun, and who knows, maybe it will get exhibited if I get enough interest!
This will be my first ever proper layout, I used to have a large layout when I was younger however it had 0 scenery. I know very little about modelling so this will be a massive learning experience for me!
I started with track and building I already owned, including a couple of metcalfe kits, I purchased a few extra of these to add extra buildings.
The layout will consist of several of these 1.2x0.5m boards so that it can easily be stored and transported. This is simply the first of many boards!
The idea is to do this on a budget, as I am but a poor lowly student.
Anyway here's some eye candy in approximate chronological order!
As you can see there was very little planning, I just sort of started!
First section of the main building!
Main station building with platforms as yet unballasted
Got some ballast down! platforms have also been glued down and tunnel portals added
Portals finished and two houses added!
Added some grass that I had lying around and a random tree in a box, but the effect looks good!
Added a retaining wall and a car park, I hove how this little bit looks!
Just a beauty shot
Added a retaining wall to the other side
Next I hope to get a signal box in, and a bus station down the front!

For all those interested, the scope of this layout has been changed. It is now known as hebble end and will have its own new topic in the very near future
