I'd stick with the OP's original idea as the narrower operating well on this would to me, be more of an annoyance than having to build/view through the trusses. I recall that my father's loft layout didn't seem to suffer overly as a result of fitting similarly between the them.

Having watched the linked YouTube video outlining his plans, it seems to me that while it's not to everyone's preference, @Liam_uk is already accepting of the fact that the trusses are where they are and has considered the impact they will have.

Sorry I can't be of any help planning-wise, that's a far larger space than I could ever hope to have, but will follow with interest and wish you well with your plans.

You could use a standard curved point and a third radius outer curve to swing the branch back closer to the other tracks. It would need a custom track piece as the curve point is 2nd radius in an otherwise 3rd radius curve.   I amended my drawing to show this.  See anyrail pic .

I have been trying to figure out if there's a way to have a curved point going from 3rd to 4th radius instead of 2nd to 3rd to start the branchline but can't see a combination of track that makes the geometry work. Set-track curved points are too tight and streamline points too gentle. Any bright ideas welcome!

Yes, as you've discovered, the curved points can be quite difficult/frustrating to work with :scratchhead:

Again keeping to Setrack radii, I've had another little play-around: lengthening the "branch" as much as I think possible without using flex-track on part of the outer curve at the RHS. It should now be usable for fiddling/storage of a decent length train prior to phase 2.  The x-over has had to go and the point off of the middle of the reverse curve moved a little so as to avoid the joint in the baseboards.

A reasonable thought, but they're definitely not working. My topic has eight tags. When I search on any of them I get a nil return.

Oh yes, apologies, I see what you mean now. I've just tried several searches using tags from various threads including yours and they all return nil results, even commonly used ones such as "oo".

That's just reminded me that I haven't been able to make tags work since the February 2019 changes. Every tag I select brings up "no content found" or such like. Not a major issue, which is why I've never mentioned it before.

I no expert, but I imagine it's not that they're not working as such, but more that unless people use tags in the first place then there won't be any related content for them to find.

It's no big deal really, and not of much use for very common subjects such as "Hornby" or "N gauge" as that'd be easily found in the relevant areas of the forums anyway, but I think they do become useful for quite specific subjects; "Dorman Long", "ICI Billingham", "Skerne Bridge" for example, especially if that content isn't mentioned in the thread title.

I think 3 coaches remain possible with shunt release, but if a loco is to take its own train back out then 2 might be more realistic.

Looks to be another good plan :good:

If this were to be my layout, I'd most probably limit my trains to 2 coaches as I think that's a better aesthetic fit for the 4x4 circuit.

  7. SPEED-READING

Thank you for pointing that out.  It's not always easy to spot a specific useful posting when trying to speed-read a thread that's covering quite a wide range of issues, often with rapid-fire interactions going on.

Just an idea, but when replying in a thread such as this, that'll contain various bits of related yet diverse information, it would be helpful (especially to speed-readers :)) to add a short title as I've done at the top of this post.

That said, if I have a specific question then I tend not to speed-read but read thoroughly from the beginning, often learning something else I hadn't thought of along the way.

On a slightly related note: adding Tags when creating a New Topic can be helpful to readers too.

PS: not having a go @ejstubbs just quoting you as you specifically mentioned speed-reading.

RMWeb needs to come with a user guide, nice one, I've just applied that @OhOh

I think I found that quite by accident yesterday while looking for something else that I now can't recall. I've always taken a "I wonder what'd happen if I press that and that?" approach to computers ... with a few disastrous results to my name

If you mean how do you get there from the View New Content page for instance - click on the dot or star to the left of that topic's line in VNC.

    I've done it like this:

    - click the down arrow next to your username in the top right of the screen

    - account settings

    -content view behaviour

-take me to content I haven't read

    -save

Then just clicking on the thread title (as opposed to the dot or star) will take you to the first post you've not read.

If you don't mind a somewhat more generic terminus and a single line to/from the circuit, you could have something like this in 4'x10'.

All points are Setrack so same geometry as Hornby. I've used flex for some bits as am limited to 50 pieces on Anyrail.

Sorry, looks that my upload didn't actually upload last night (I kept getting error messages) so here it is again. Looks that @Zomboid has planned fairly similar, and somewhat neater.

The circuit parts are sectional track (Peco in Anyrail, but they are pretty interchangeable), but it is streamline in the station area. Might make it unsuitable, but I still enjoyed drawing them.

I'm slowly coming to the realisation that I find the planning much more fun than the actual construction. Likely down to the endless possibilities and problem solving opportunities that planning offers - that or just a plain and simple fear of commitment - but that's probably for another discussion elsewhere :D
