I think Hornby did the right thing ditching the Thomas franchise.  Here's why...

I believe Thomas is really only popular with the smaller children.  Children who are probably not dexterous enough to assemble and run Thomas and his friends.  By the time they get to an age where they can handle the products and re-rail the vehicles, I think they've moved on to other things.   Eg super heroes, Lego, Minecraft etc.

I'm fortunate enough to be blessed with a grandchild who at the age of 7 says Thomas is 'Babyish', peer-group pressure I presume?  He even said the maybe we could repaint some of the stock so it isn't Thomas any more.  I'd bought him Percy and the mail train two or three years ago.  He loved launching it round the track at high speed and delighted in accidents.  There's an awful lot of accidents in the Thomas TV programmes!

Now after watching the Great Model Railway Challenge TV show he delights in using the mail train to deposit a model person on the track.  It always has to be a lady!  Have we produced a serial killer? ;-)

I have a colleague with a 3 year old son who is infatuated by Thomas - maybe the Thomas set will have to be moved on.

I too think the Thomas prices are a 'bit toppy' - £30 - £50 for a coach!  I guess that's partially due to the licence fee.

Also as an aside DCC is a must for children, they insist on running more than one train on the track.   I do think Hornby are barking up the wrong tree introducing the analogue controls that they did this year.  They really need to produce a value for money DCC system.  Railmaster does appeal to my grandson.

I'd be interested to hear what others think...

To try to go through some of the points above: 'I believe Thomas is really only popular with the smaller children...'. That is just one section of a very busy market. Small children now have a voice - it's not 'mum, I want that one' any more, they actually get it. People spend ridiculous amounts of money on toys for their kids - do a quick eBay search for Thomas and Friends on eBay, and barring the most recent releases you'll see some pretty wacky examples. Add into that a pretty active collectors market and a YouTube market that buys trains to produce reviews, and you've got a pretty healthy demand.

In terms of Thomas being babyish, children get to an age where they want to appear more grown up or developed. Admittedly, some children move on from Thomas - I recall being glued to it when really young, but by seven I'd found Thunderbirds (the original, not the new animated rubbish) and Power Rangers and also didn't have much time for Thomas. Doesn't mean that I don't have a Hornby version that I haven't run for years and a G Scale version that gets the odd cheeky outing now though!

The pricing is an absolute joke - there are no two ways around it. I'm currently working through Narcos on Netflix during lockdown - these prices scream of Bachmann's 'war tax' being fobbed off onto customers yet again for products they've already developed and that have been sold on one way or another previously on eBay, etc, for far less than the quoted RRPs. Their strategy has become one of gradual inflation at each pricing opportunity - you should be looking to entice children into the hobby with a cheap route of entry in a product they like. There are so many cheaply available Thomas's and Percy's available on eBay from Hornby, and I hope children go after these as opposed to swindling £75 out of the bank of mum and dad and lining these people's pockets. The G Scale versions are really nice visually, but are also quite cheap in terms of quality when compared to an LGB model.

I'm not a big fan of DCC myself, but I can see how in tight layouts for minimal effort it can provide an effective solution to allow children to run more than one loco. You'll have to offset this against Bachmann's 'war tax' cabinet though, who will no doubt want compensating for the privelige of fitting a chipboard of components and solder costing pence to produce...

    Western Pullman set £745

Goodness knows how £745 in OO became a bargain...

For anyone who does see it as such, or interested in any similar items on the SDR eBay page, if you checkout any item completely free using Topcashback (Link to Site) they are currently paying out as a promotion at 2% vice 1.

If you've not used it before, it might not seem like much, but it really does add up over time. I've accumulated around £550 over the course of about six years solely from cashback from mostly eBay purchases and other retailers - hopefully that Pullman will still be on offer when I manage to accumulate another £200! :D

  4. Couple from AC Slotcars on eBay - again, one of each but they put similar items on from time to time. Both are used, so would advise to study photographs carefully. Previously bought a used model off them that was in fantastic condition, but as always with delicate models - pays to be careful.

  5. AC Slotcars of Eastleigh have recently been listing some competitively priced items on eBay. Typically marked as Second Hand, a number appear to be as new and excellently priced.

Here is a link to their items filtered by train items and newly listed:

It is difficult to pull out individual items as they are typically one of each and sell quite quickly, so worth keeping a keen eye on. There is a KESR Terrier loco currently listed for £65:

There are also a number of other newly tooled Terrier locomotives listed for £70 with free post and best offers available.

Hornby R3693 B2 Peckett competitively priced at £85 with free post and best offers available:

This morning, a SECR Wainwright H sold for £85:

I've also recently bought a R3555 William Stanier FRS off them for £110 which they keep listing from time to time, so worthwhile keeping an eye out for anyone after one of these. Its arrived in fantastic as new condition as well.

With all due respect, I haven't seen you post a single bargain, certainly not in recent times.  I have been following this thread and its predecessor since their respective inceptions.  You have, however, engaged in plenty of very wordy chatter and that is fine (in my opinion).

Don't fix what ain't broken and the dent in my credit card is proof that this thread is working!  Live and let live, remember the delete button and scrollbar.

Back to the bargains (again) and back to Hereford Models (again, again):

Bachmann 32-912 3 car Class 108 in BR Blue.  Hard to find these days and 55 quid cheaper than RRP at £114.65...

    http://herefordmodels.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=340_350_355_357&products_id=11588

Bachmann 31-995 LMS 1000 in Brunswick Green.  Getting more difficult to find and nearly 60 quid cheaper than the next cheapest alternative supplier, £101.95...

    http://herefordmodels.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=340_350_355_357&products_id=7191

    Two left of each.

    Alun

31-995 available for £3 under the Hereford price at Footplate models with three left in stock at the time of posting:

    https://footplate.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=38_60&products_id=5218

It does pay to do just a little bit of research before posting.

every  post about the problem, does not solve the problem - it is the problem.....   :)

It is really simple  - dont post without a bargain or to update with pertinent info about a bargain....  :)

I think you missed the point of my post. Not sure whether you have been following this thread from its inception, but in case you haven't, we have been through this cycle many, many times before. We always end up back in the same place, hence it is not quite as simple as you are suggesting and thus the reason for my post.

Suggest you check with your local bookmaker for odds on 'stern post highlighting thread is for posting of bargains only, people start discussing bargains, the weather, pricing policies and everything else, bargain police swoop in resulting in another stern post highlighting thread is for posting of bargains only. Cycle repeats until internet is no more.'

That comment was directed at the repeat offenders. For example,  why do we keep having the "I got one too" posts that are against the "rules"? The original thread got locked for a reason, let's not have this one go down the same path eh?

There have been no bargains for over a page -  and some of us have limited time to read this thread, having jobs to do that take time. Reading a discussion that could have been addressed by one post pointing at the relevant thread is frustrating. Before that we had discussion about Amazon selling model twice in not many pages and a discussion on ebay selling modes.

Anyhow, I will stop cluttering up the thread and just request that people read and take note of the original post.

    Roy

Roy - this goes back to the post that I made recently. This will continue to happen no matter what thread iteration or policing you apply to the thread. By the nature of a forum, people naturally want to discuss things - it doesn't matter how many times you point out the so-called 'rules', it's part of being human to question. You can either moan at those who do, or you can provide a platform for them to facilitate it whilst keeping to the aim of the thread in keeping bargains at the top. As previously mentioned, you would need a fundamental change to the structure to achieve that in my opinion - I floated the idea recently, but the general consensus was that the current format works and so should be left alone.

It's a case of accepting that you will have to deal with it I'm afraid and come to terms with the fact that you will have to wade through posts of non bargain material. I don't like it either, but it is what it is.

I always wait for these before listing, I've sold hundreds of items and never been mischarged. The only thing that bit me was that if you lift multiples of an item they are exempt. So if I have (for example) multiple identical wagons now I list as 4 separate listings! Worth watching out for though certainly. I've relisted items and it's counted, but an item has to sell within 30 days. Indeed I ended and relisted several listings yesterday to take advantage of this month's offer.

I was interested that this one was 10 days long - generally it's a long weekend.

I have used the `Sell Similar item' before when doing this to retain the listing structure and amend the photographs, and have made sure that it is deducted from my total allowance. As per my original post, I was still charged for it as they suggested that the items were actually relists, but I advised them that they were not because there was no ended listing for them to be a relist of!

Its always worth a check at the bottom of the selling page to see if your listings are being deducted “used” / “left” from your total of the promotional listings...

if the numbers not changing, the listing isnt qualifying..0C9EB155-E4B1-4BFE-A662-CA866067D58E.jpeg.fcdc6f26cafcc22b6436077876d27874.jpeg

That was the peculiar thing with mine - they were being deducted from the total as you can see it in the Selling part of the dashboard within the app. However, they then tried to say to me that I hadn't signed up for it because the message they sent through my eBay inbox was showing as unread, as i'd actually signed up via the email link instead. They did accept my explanation, however to be double sure this time, I have taken a snapshot on my phone as proof in case that reason is used again.

  11. Just thought I would post this here for the benefit of the modelling community. Long story short - if you have sold items recently under eBay's £1 max final value fee promotion, just be wary on your invoices that eBay have not charged you the 10% rate.

    Long story:

During the lockdown, I have been quite efficient in sorting through some items in and around the home to sell on eBay. Given their recent £1 maximum final value fee promotional days and the ability for courier services to collect items with a door to door delivery, it seemed an ideal opportunity to clear out some of the clutter from home. I promptly accepted the promotional offer that was sent to my email address, and began selling. Each time an item was listed, the wheel in my seller dashboard on my phone was notifying me of the number of items I had remaining as part of the promotion that I could list, and was reducing on each occasion.

Having checked my invoices following these sales and delivery of items, I found that I was due to be billed a fairly alarming amount on my monthly invoice on my sellers account. When investigating further, I found that the items that had been sold had a 10% final value fee applied - not just to the item itself, but to the postage also.

It took approximately five hours of waiting and talking to numerous different representatives on eBay's live chat service to try to get to the bottom of what had happened. Firstly, I was accused of relisting the items. I had used a template from another item through the `Sell a Similar Item' function for certain listings, and had to advise that it was not that. Then I was told that it was because the email within my eBay inbox with the link to accept the promotion was showing as unread. Again, went back to them to advise that I had signed up through email.

On the third occasion, there was an admittance that there had been a glitch in the system and that my transactions would be refunded. On checking a short while later, some had, but the ones that I had accepted best offers on had been missed off. Back onto them again - this time, there was less hanging around to get to where I needed to be, but after the representative saying they would process this for me, I then found that they hadn't deducted the postage. When I asked why, they said that final value fees for postage are excluded from the promotion. I asked them to show me this in their terms and conditions as the other representative had nulled off the fees applied to the postage, to which I was promptly disconnected from the chat. I then spoke to yet another representative, having gone through everything again including the above, and finally managed to get corrected totals applied to the postage.

I have read at least one thread online of others who have also experienced issues with the above. It is not just the fact that there seems to be a lack of standardisation in training at eBay along with the time spent waiting that has made me annoyed, it is to think of how many other people could potentially be in exactly the same position as me, have perhaps skipped checking over their bill this month thinking `it'll be fine' and being excessively charged for something without knowing. I am not trying to suggest that eBay are in the business of doing this, but I would just advise others that have sold items during a recent promotion to make sure they check their invoices thoroughly if the amount charged appears to be excessive.

If anyone has come across anything akin to the above, I would be interested to hear from you.

I will repeat - this is the bargain hunters thread, not a review hunters thread.

The intention of posting the video wasn't to that effect. A bargain had been posted for £75 down from an RRP of £159. A similar bargain was posted recently, but after watching Sam's video I opted against purchasing so just wanted to make other potential buyers aware that they knew what they were letting themselves in for. As is the mantra of this thread, the definition of a bargain is decided by the potential purchaser.

Personally, I found Jason's comment rather condescending which is a shame, but that is a whole new topic and this should stick to bargains. As I say - video posted just to make buyers aware. Nothing else.

Also several new 1361 and 1366 Panniers available for £75 too.  https://clarkrailworks.com/collections/oo-gauge

Thanks - saw an interesting (and honest) video review on Youtube recently of a 1361 - link is here in case anyone is interested in purchasing one of them:

At the end of the day this thread is a friendly nod towards bargains not a ComparetheMarket price comparison page

I agree with you - the purpose of my post wasn't to suggest something of that format. It was more to go hand in hand with the fact that this is a forum, and whilst the topic of what should and shouldn't be posted within this thread has come up previously, posts inevitably generate some form of discussion, so it was a thought to try to facilitate that whilst still providing a format to view posted bargains.
