The BFO had a much bigger guards/van space than the TGS

The TGS has 7 full size windows then a normal pillar to a small window, a van space and the door and a 1/3rd .

The BFO has 6 full size windows a wider pillar than normal, a full width window the van space and the door and a 1/3rd.

The BFO, being a MK3b has integral tail lights whereas the TGS is plain. There is also some differences in the underframe modules.

The roof should be the same.

Recently an extra window has been added to the van space in at least 17173.

There are several threads on the BFO, they were originally planned to test 125mph running for ECML hauled stock with the Class 89. When this was swapped for the 140mph Mk4 and 91s they were orphaned but then seen as solving a problem with the 1st only Manchester Pullman (and advertised as being built for it). Due to the delays in construction this became irrelevant as the MP went dual class. The were used as the only brake vehicle in the Glasgow portion of the 1986/87 Clansman, otherwise they were used as extra FO's. Generally guards tended to use these as opposed to any NHA BG tacked on the end as the ride was better - it only stirred the tea rather than spill it.

AFAIK all BFOs had 6 windows then a large pillar then another window on each side, then FGW put in an 8th on the corridor side, and then it was removed when the coaches were converted to BSOs during 2018 refurbishment, at which point the buffet was extensively refurbished, and the TSO had disabled facilities put in.

  2. Hi all,

This is just a workbench thread to show anyone who's interested what i get up to.

my current project is creating a reasonable representation of the GWR night riviera. i have so far created the RFM and BSO and I'm now looking at how to do the TSO as it has a strange window arrangement at the toilet end. any tips are very much appreciated.

here are some pictures of what i've done so far.

    IMG_2013.JPG.12936844ee6156ca186aef4c1816e7e3.JPGIMG_2014.JPG.3d735192cfbfb4f05d96db0b11d69d5e.JPG

  3. ok so today was spent modifying my oxford coach which thankfully turned up early in the day.

    IMG_2003.JPG.b030120eecea4720126b3097ac14becf.JPG

i tried to take pictures of most of the steps so that if anyone wants to try it themselves they can.

i started by removing all of the detail from the end, it just pops out when you press from the inside of the coach.

next i removed the roevac vents and added the square ones.

    IMG_2004.JPG.559fe984a50a4479f2bf6c953ef88bb6.JPG

i filled in the toilet windows and the first windows on both sides of the coach.(note they got filed down more than this and you can now just see a vague outline of them)

    IMG_2005.JPG.f7c9415f885d8acd8bd61c51c694c631.JPG

then i began cutting the side of the coach. i cut almost flush with the window frame on one side and as far from it as possible on the other sideIMG_2006.JPG.0d6eeb1e09707b3566e6ff68e6a9f12a.JPGIMG_2007.JPG.f17329fd7e7f3ff6a28ac37a54b8fa57.JPG

i dont have any photos past this point as i just wnted to get on with it, but essentially i cut an identical piece out of the other side, and swapped them around, meaning the blanked window and the window aperture were right next to each other.

this was followed by filling, sanding, priming, filling and sanding for a fairly long period to fill up the gaps between the pieces.

    IMG_2008.JPG.d1f97bb4e09a5321ed73d68e5d150032.JPG

the coach has now recieved a coat of green paint, and i have removed 2 seating bays from the interior and replaced them with a cut down guards compartment from a spare airfix mk2.

    219090633_IMG_20091.JPG.cbde2b61fd2a170f187232b5b2d78570.JPG

once this dries tomorrow i will paint the doors and roof and apply the decals, and finally i will drill light holes and do put tail lights on both ends and interior lighting.

I think we should assume the FGW 402xx and the Midland Pullman buffets will be Limby lash ups, we need to see the roof to see if they are just late number RFMs in other liveries.

i thought the same, but i have just looked at the image after pre ordering, and (yes i know its a photoshopped image so may or may not mean anything) it does have the correct vents to not be a repainted RFM

     r40035_1_fgw-mk3-buffet-car.jpg.9d4e8034c42e57f0acf2a7a8b722ed20.jpg

also (once again i know its a photoshop) if they had done it from the image of an RFM it would have the smaller window by the buffet counter

at the end of the day however, all we can do at this time is speculate until Hornby release more information.

  5. Today i spent a bit of time figuring out how i'm going to do the BFO/BSO. they were converted into BSOs in 2018 i think during refurbishment. i am going to use an oxford rail mk3a as a donor coach, and use 3d printed roof vents to turn it into a mk3B, along with drilling holes for lights.

to get the windows correct due to the larger pillar by the guard's compartment, i've drawn up a basic sketch showing where to cut etc. it's only an aproxximation and as long as the spacing is noticably larger, im happy with it.

this will have a result that looks something like this540525701_HornbyR4633ABRIntercityMk3TFE41064.jpg.4ec7f5c5dc84ef570a9268e5b0fdc7c9.jpg

i will be ordering the oxford coach next week hopefully so as soon as that arrives then progress will begin.

  6. my current project is making an accurate representation of the GWR/FGW Night Riviera Sleeper. I have jsut finished the buffet, and i'm now purchasing two more coaches for the TSO, and the BSO. I feel the RFM looks ok, as ive had to fabricate roof vents and reposition the service hatch. i have only decalled one side to save resources, and as it will only be seen from that side, it isnt an issue

    Thanks.

The end detail is all bits from the scrapbox and wire.

The overlays were curved by rolling them with a piece of steel bar on an old mousemat.

They are the correct length to fit between the doors, and use the panel line to hide the edge.

Plenty of clamps were used to keep them in place while the Araldite cured !!

    Cheers,

    Phil.

im now looking at getting some for the Sleeper coaches as they seem to be out of stock on the BFO. just out of interest, what paint and transfers did you use for the FGW livery?

A million years ago, Hurst Models produced Brass overlays for the BFO & buffets, they do very occasionally still appear for sale secondhand.

This is my attempt at converting Lima mk3's, which is all that was available at the time !

    Cheers,

    Phil.

those look really nice! How did you make the end detail? and i occasionally see the hurst overlays on the likes of Ebay etc, but have been unsure of how difficult they would be to use, as the mk3s have a curve in thebodyside. and how do you make the overlay fit flush with the doors?

EDIT: or they were never present - this one was converted from an FO

they were present, as this picture shows-

10219 heads north through Totnes on: 5A40 10:55 Plymouth to Old Oak Common 24/11/14

i'd recommend looking at this website, as it has lots of pictures of essentially every item of rolling stock. you can see on the right the Roevac vents on the roof, which denote it as a FO conversion, as opposed to this one (10232) which has the square vents on the far left, along with the the half size windows( the FO conversions had full size windows on the counter side)

10232 departs Totnes on the: 2C51 17:50 Exeter St Davids to Penzance 14/06/14

    Cheers,

that last picture is of a mk3B, not a mk3A, the noticable difference being the HST style vents. this can be done with just a normal Hornby model, or you can do what im doing and swap them onto an oxford model to give a reasonable representation.

  11. how did you connect the kadees to the mk3s? im trying to couple some mk3s the smae way, but how does it go round corners? wouldnt you get the gangway version of buffer lock because they are coupled too close to slide past each other? or am i just missing something? if you could post some pictures that would be a massive help.

    thanks

Hi @Mackenzie546 Kernow runned out of the first limited edition set of coaches but they still got stock off the second run of limited edition sleeper coaches. The set costs £104.99 and the code is R4868A.

The day coaches are not made correctly due to the limitations of the tooling used.

    Samuel.

yeah thats what i thought about the day coaches, I'm probably going to do some mods to existing coaches eg turn the half windows on the Hornby RFM into full windows etc and the sleeping coaches will probably be the kernow ones

    Take 2 coaches. 1 x TGS and 1 x FO.

Cut the guards area out of the tgs including the 1 passenger window, cutting as close to the next frame as possible

Cut the end two windows out of the one side of the FO leaving as much frame as possible

Insert section of TGS into FO side and trim guards end to fit.

    File, sand, paint and glaze

    Should about do it

Thats assuming the other side is just windows as per a normal FO?

the windows on both sides are spaced apart from the others but the window on one side is missingimage.png.5c795cc41c946e815fac21b4c38b4b1f.pngimage.png.55126ea5fbba1aa92981196d188969bc.png

  14. so... ive decided to undertake the somewhat difficult job of accurately depicting the Great Western Sleeper service. the formation I'll be going for is 57(602/605),SLEP,SLEP,SLEP, RFM, TSD, BSO.

has anyone got advice on making a BSO and also would anyone recommend the Oxford MK3a to spray up- ive seen posts that say these coaches are flimsy, but to me i just want something more detailed than the Hornby MK3. and does anyone know a way to make some SLEPs- Hornby ones are hard to track down. And finally- what paint do people recommend for doing the GWR stock- i'm thinking of Rust-oleum british racing green but have seen things that say this isnt right.

    Thanks in advance
