  1. Thanks for that reply. Just found a copy of that book online @ £ 3.69 inc postage so have bought it.
  2. In the early 1970's the BBC ran a segment on Tomorrow's World about freight wagons of the future. I think it was filmed on the Derby test track. Does anyone have details of this project?
  3. Just watching the Famous Five on BBC iPlayer. Much of the programme is railway footage, supposably on a pre second world war night sleeper. Can anyone explain the various train shots. they seem to be mixture of stock shots, bits on the NYMR and CGI. My own correction having looked the railway up the Dean Forest is the location not the NYMR,
  4. A comprehensive source of info' is to take out a subscription to Railway Modeller as you get a access to all their issues back to 1949. Number of adverts for Farish in those issues.
  5. Picking up a couple of points made in recent posts, sorry about the lack of quotes but using a tablet to reply. This obsession with opening doors on moving trains is not the main issue. Anyone who has spent time with slam door stock, either as guard, passenger or on the platform will know the big issues are: doors opening before the train comes to a halt, passengers attempting to board a train after the right-away has been given, rail tour passengers getting off at station stops which are not part of the public schedule, non railtour passengers trying to get on a railtour, passengers opening doors on the wrong side, doors left on the latch, etc...
  6. No one has addressed the second half of the issue. If you get cash to the seller how do you ensure they send the goods? You pay your money sellers says they have dispatched it, item never arrives would the police have the time for the matter?
  7. I know this is a detail but having climbed into many Mk1 carriages over the years, I was amazed at the ease at which the murderer (aka the train driver) got into carriage. I wish I knew his secret as I would only attempt the manoeuvre he made with a ladder and obviously not on a moving train. Life would be simpler with his super power.
  8. Next week's episode should be interesting The RAIB investigation into the runaway train with an unauthorized person in the cab.🤣
  9. Although I didn't start attending exhibitions until the start of the 1970's when my interest in railways was reignited and I had a salary. My first "exhibitions" would have been the annual birthday trip to see the Garages (autocorrect for Gamages) layout in the late 1950's.
  10. As you're looking for a fixed installation I would second @ColinK and suggest a local carpenter/joiner. You will need to make clear the specification of what wood you want for the supports and top.
  11. Noted -half my modelling time is working with 1/72nd scale Aircraft and vehicles, Indeed I will be using three of these to sit alongside the wagons. https://uk.airfix.com/products/wwii-usaaf-8th-bomber-resupply-set-a06304
  12. I did notice that you had a number of post-war transfers for these wagons in your range. All the references or the livery I have are copyright so I cannot post them here. I have sent you a copy of the relevant article by Wetransfer. It looks at Dapol based their "0" gauge model on one of these photo's. As such the Dapol 7mm model is a reasonable source for reference.
  13. I have looked at the normal suppliers without any success. I have a rake of 15 oil tankers to repaint as late WW2 examples. Although not all the wagons are 100% correct I would like to get the livery details right. So does anyone know of a source for the simple markings. As they are white I cannot print them myself. As an aside I might need a 1:1 scale set as well!
  14. I've used Foam board on a number of occasions both for structures and small baseboards. For baseboards I use a photo glue gun. The only issues I have had as some warping when I used water based paints also to get good joints cutting board vertically can be an issue. I use a couple of steel rulers on top of each other but special knives are available for cutting foam board.
  15. Bearing in mind the attention to detail with planes, Masters of the Air did not do too well with trains in episode 6,. Firstly a trip from Norfolk to Oxford on a train of Mk1's in carmine and cream hauled by a Southern loco'. Then as the POW's were loaded onto a train in Germany I remaked to Mrs Ruleone that the tender had a look of a GWR type and that the vans used looked British. The camera then panned round to show Didcot's coaling stage. However the CGI kreigsloco that passed was very well done.
  16. In today's market I would answer the op question as at least £250. My more serious answer has already been covered - as soon as the owner is enthused enough to add items to what comes in the box. My current set up is based on the Hornby track mat - but it is now a layout.
  17. Like others I actually started spotting train was from my bedroom which overlooked the Liverpool St - Enfield line in the mid50's. Nearly all N7's in those days. Later in the decade I read an article that said that you might as well just collect door numbers as loco numbers. What was important to record was what the loco was doing. Does anyone else remember that article, I guess it world have been in Trains Illustrated which I read at the time.
  18. Apart from the Goblin line which has been raised earlier my only concern is using just one colour and name for the Enfield/Chingford/Chestnut services. Someone vat Hackney Downs could be misled by this and end up in Enfield rather than Chingford. I guess it's down to the same units being used on all three services.
  19. To add to this list you need to add 6.Handles queries, complaints returns etc. Which I understand Hattons did very effectively. I received an e-mail from Hattons last year that indicated that there were looking into this possibility. How you would protect your business reputation against rogue dealers using your portal might be a big problem. You only have to look at issues raised in this forum about e-bay to see this.
  20. Not a magazine, but if you are happy with structures from Eastern England the Great Eastern Railway Society files emporium has a number of downloadable plans at reasonable prices. https://www.gersociety.org.uk/index.php/files-emporium-home
  21. Does anyone know when the term parliamentary train moved to the currently accepted meaning of a train to avoid the closure procedure from the original one train a day at workman's fares?
  22. They have obviously changed the wording as their Facebook page has comments pointing out the error such as "Airfix NOT your first Chinook. Sad times when you don't know your own product history" not my comment.
  23. Just had an e-mail from Hornby that asks "Can you remember a time when Hornby wasn’t based in Margate?". Someone in the marketing department has a short memory - they were based in Sandwich for many years. This amnesia also affected the Airfix launch when they said that the Chinook helicopter had not been in the Airfix range before, when the Italiari model had been sold in an Airfix box for many years.
  24. Just had a rather confusing e-mail from Hattons: "We’re contacting you today as you have outstanding pre-orders with us that we will no longer be able to fulfill due to our forthcoming closure." The only items I have on back-order are the re-issue of the Warwell's so these should be unaffected. However while checking on the Warwell's I noticed this as a future release: "Hattons Originals RJD-Book001 "What they don't teach you in Harvard Model Railway university" by Richard Davies, Hattons Model Railways" will be interesting reading if it does appear.
  25. Back to the original post. I must admit I have not read all of the posts in this thread as most of them appear to be a form of wish listing, despite the thread title. So apologies if this duplicates something already said. 2024 is probably the last year where projects that Simon Kohler OK'd will feature as many of these would have been too far down the line to cancel. So I would expect at least one quirky/gimmicky item along the lines of Rocket or Lion left over from SK. Overall, and looking at comments in the Hornby annual report, I would expect some growth in the number of "budget" items. This would: address the cost of living issue, strengthen Hornby's position in the entry level market and give a return on assets which have been depreciated in the books. For example the Dapol J94 could probably make a profit for Hornby at less that the current EFE discount price. The Airfix "Vintage Classics" seem to be selling well for Hornby and these are priced at less than the current models as are the new Entry Level vehicles and planes, which are listed at around 60% of the equivalent full fat models.
