  1. 1M18 would indicate an Anglo-Scottish train, probably Glasgow-Euston. The 2nd & 3rd coaches should therefore be 2 Mk2d FK, so no doubt the Mk1 FO & Mk2a FK (Mk2b would have wrap-round doors) were the nearest substitutions to cover for non-available stock. The late build Mk1 FO was well regarded, although obviously if it was a hot day the lack of air-con would be a disadvantage. The Mk2a FK, again other than pressure ventilation rather than full air-conditioning, there wasn't much difference internally to a Mk2d FK. So other than air conditioning I would still say both were superior to the Mk2e/f TSO's in the 2nd class section.
  2. 1A38 was the 14:00 KX-Edinburgh - The Heart of Midlothian. It is the Saturday train as it utilises one of the Talisman sets. 1A15 was the 09:35 Newcastle-KX, a summer dated working 1A21 was the 11:00 Newcastle-KX The Z headcode was also a ECML special working, but at some point in the journey on or via the LMR.
  3. Swayfield from yesterday: 1L06 was the 09:20 KX-Leeds/Bradford 1S35 was the 14:00 KX-Edinburgh 3S22 was the 10:40SO KX Goods-Edinburgh parcels 1D05 was the 17:10 KX-Hull, The Hull Pullman (appears to be minus it's RMB, which should be between the Mk2d/f second class and the RU) 1A16 was the 09:52 Harrogate-KX - The Saturday Yorkshire Pullman (only 2 Pullman cars on Saturdays rather than 4 Mon-Fri) Peascliffe Tunnel from 23rd June 1L09 was the 10:20 KX-Leeds/Bradford C3277 was the 09:20 Newcastle-KX
  4. Indeed it was, although I think the seats would more likely have featured vinyl rather than leather. Non-swivelling versions were fitted to the Mk2 Pullmans, the first class Mk1 Pullmans when refurbished in 1967, and the Mk2c/d/e FO's.
  5. I remember seeing on more than one occasion a Mk2e BSO with orange vestibule, rather than the usual putty colour. This was around 1979 at St Pancras in a Sheffield set. When I got the chance, I made a mental note of the coach number to check in a Coaching Stock pocket book, when I got home, to make sure that it wasn't a Mk2d. It may have been M9497 because it wasn't the first in the Mk2e batch, but it is a long time ago now! My recollection is that there was no wood panelling to the outside of the toilet compartment, so the whole vestibule was orange - again it was a long time ago though.
  6. 1C76 was the 15:55 Derby-St Pancras 1M79 was the 14:55 Sheffield-St Pancras. The 2nd coach was in theory Lounge Car M14902, although difficult to tell from the corridor side. The train has an extra FK at the front.
  7. The set is the one which replaced The Executive set which ran up to May 1972. The Executive featured 2 RK's and only made 2 journeys a day Mon-Fri. This was replaced by the formation as shown in the photo, and was from the loco - BSO, FK, 2FO, RK, FO, TSO*, 2TSO, BSO and was formed of the then new Mk2d/e stock. (* The TSO next to the FO was fitted with clip-on table tops for dining so giving a total of 4 dining cars with the 3FO's which would have been required for the early morning service from Wolverhampton ). The set worked a much more intensive program: SX 07:25 Wolverhampton-Euston 10:10 Euston-Wolverhampton 12:55 Wolverhampton-Euston 15:40 Euston-Birmingham 17:45 Birmingham-Euston 20:10 Euston-Wolverhampton SO 10:45 Birmingham-Euston 13:10 Euston-Wolverhampton 15:55 Wolverhampton-Euston 18:40 Euston-Wolverhampton
  8. The SO & TSO codes to denote 2+1 & 2+2 seating were only really used on the ER & NER up to 1967. The LMR just used SO with the number of seats in brackets i.e. SO(48) or SO(64). The WR & SR didn't have 2+1 second class. After 1967 the codes became more generally recognised across all regions.
  9. According to the diagram - D.151 has recessed doors at the saloon end but the pantry end doors are flush. Overall dimensions are the same as D.144 - 9' 2 1/4" over body, 9' 3" over mouldings and Extreme width 9' 4". To further complicate things 11 D144 RF were modernised by BR from 1957-60. This mainly affected the interior, but roof and underframe detail would be different, and as shown in Harris E9075E at least - has 2 reduced depth pantry windows.
  10. Looking at the diagram book: D.10C - width over body 9' 0", extreme width 9' 3" D.144 - width over mouldings 9' 3", extreme width 9' 4" The recessed doors has allowed a greater body width in D.144. Later D.144 (from c1935) besides angle trussing had sliding quarterlights in the saloon (rather than louvred ones).
  11. C2860 from the formation, was the 09:00 KX-Newcastle C201 possibly 1A27 13:00 Newcastle-KX C3399 from the formation either the 08:45 or 10:35 Aberdeen-KX
  12. J1491 is almost certainly the Uddingston-Cliff cement train. 4F08 & 3F09 - the *F* headcode was for special train on the ECML, so possibly these trains were not regular workings. 1A23 was the 10:00 Edinburgh-KX, the up Flying Scotsman 1A62 - ECML trains didn't normally have headcodes with a number this high. Possibly an extra?
  13. C1624 from the formation is probably the 17:38 Hull-KX 1S20 is the 10:10 KX-Edinburgh
  14. 1L06 was the 09:10 KX-Leeds/Hull 1A33 was the 15:15 Newcastle-KX 1S93 from the formation I suspect has a wrong reporting number. I think it should have been 1S33 13:00SuO KX-Edinburgh.
  15. J2458 will be a class 46 as the train is Air-braked. J2459 is more likely to be the 12:29SO KX-Huntingdon (if the photo was taken on a Saturday) 1L16 was the 13:20 KX-Leeds/Bradford in the 1970 photo and the same train retimed to 13:10 in the 1974 photo 5D30 was 11:55MO Ferme Park to Doncaster ECS
  16. Little Bytham photos: 1L09 was the 10:20 KX-Leeds/Hull 1N10 was the 11:00 KX-Newcastle C609 from the formation was the 08:15 KX-Leeds 1S57 was the 12:00 KX-Glasgow QS - The Queen of Scots Pullman
  17. Of the Barkston photos: from the formation J1417 was the 10:50 Kings Cross-Sheffield. Sheffield Pullman workings (including the Master Cutler) were withdrawn at the beginning of October that year. IN13 was the 11:30 Kings Cross-Harrogate
  18. Of the 13 triplet sets - 1 1928 set was withdrawn in 1947 due to accident damage and another 1928 set was withdrawn in 1958. Flood lists 6 sets in use in Summer 1958 (2x 1938 sets required for the Northumbrian). There was also a set in use between KX & Leeds. So I make that 4 spare sets left in 1958. All were withdrawn in 1960 except the 1938 sets and the Silver Jubilee set with lasted until the end of 1962.
  19. The first photo is a TSO (if it were a SK, this would be the corridor side and no curtains). The curtains in 2nd class suggests an ex-SR vehicle. The second photo is a SK (from the roof vents)

    Gresley suburbans

The difference of the R numbers is due to the liveries, R4522A being crimson (despite the Hattons description) and R4560 being maroon.
  21. C2947 from the formation, is the summer dated 15:48 Newcastle-KX C2949 should be the 10:30 Aberdeen-KX C2950 should be the 09:24 Bristol-Newcastle C2952 is probably the 16:15 Newcastle-Liverpool LSt
  22. 1A08 was the 07:55 Bradford/08:30 Leeds-KX. 1A26 was the 13:35 Leeds-KX. I can't find anything for the oil train. Maybe it was diverted off the GN&GE Joint line through Peterborough? 4C60 was the 07:40 (or thereabouts) Leeds Stourton FLT to Tilbury FLT. 1L13 was the 11:30 KX-Harrogate (Saturdays formation).
  23. 1N12 was the 13:00 KX-Newcastle 1E05 was the 10:00 Edinburgh-KX, the up Flying Scotsman 1A22 was the 11:00 Newcastle-KX 1A20 was the 11:10SO Bradford/11:42SO Leeds-KX 1N13 was the summer dated 10:15SO KX-Newcastle The October 1970 sequence of 3 up trains seems odd as you would expect the Leeds train first, then the Newcastle and finally the Flying Scotsman. Maybe there was late running?
