  1. Beamish Museum - 23/04/24

I had a trip to Beamish on Tuesday hoping to catch "Sir Berkeley" in operation before it returned to the Middleton railway. Unfortunately, it had failed the day before and wasn't in steam. Although disappointing it wasn't a wasted trip as both "Puffing Billy" and "Glyder" were in steam. The full gallery can be found here. But please enjoy this little taster.

  2. It's been a little while since I posted anything new. The last several weeks have been a bit hectic for me and I'm still trying to get back into the right mindset. However, I still plan to release at least one new model a month.

This month's new model continues my Sentinel theme with the Post-War version or my 009 interpretation of one.

Full details on the model and where to purchase it can be found below.

  3. And now for something a bit different...

    use1.JPG?format=1500w
I was recently asked if I could have a go at making a 009 caricature of the standard gauge Metropolitan Railway "Metro-Vick" Bo-Bo locomotives.

I really enjoyed this project and it was nice to have a go at making something different for a change.

The kit can be built to run on either the Kato 105 chassis or Kato 109 chassis. Neither chassis is supplied in this kit.

  4. Over the past several years I've developed a lot of new skills both in how to design models and how to prepare and paint them. I felt like some of my earlier efforts weren't the best representation of these skills. So, over the past couple of months, my attention has been on redesigning a lot of my models.

Most of the re-design work is now finished. But now comes the long task of printing and painting those models. The first two models to be finished or should that be re-finished are my Kerr Stuart "Skylark" inspired locos.

Up first is one that I've nicknamed "Mauritius". I got the idea for the longer tanks from the preserved Kerr Stuart at Beau Sejour sugar estate in the north of Mauritius. Which, has longer tanks as depicted in my model.

    DSC_0437.JPG?format=1500w

And, lastly is a "Skylark" with the more traditional shorter tanks. My plan is to also offer these without tram skirts/ motion covers.

    DSC_0441.JPG?format=1500w

For those who'd like to own one these models can be purchased from the below links.

    415610136_708357394608220_65798862231697

This 3d print is loosely based on the 1st generation British Rail DMU Class 101, with inspiration being taken from David Malton's mini standard gauge locos for 009.
This DMU has been scaled to fit in with his other models.

The kit contains the following items:
1x DMS (Driving Motor Second) Body
1x DMBS (Driving Motor Brake Second) Body

The model is designed to fit 2 of the Kato 11-105 chassis (Not supplied). This model can either work with two powered chassis running together, or you can remove the gearing from one of the chassis to create a trailing coach.

I’m selling this model on behalf of the designer, Oliver Kirkby. The pictured models were painted on our behalf by Ben Siddons (Reapints by Ben). All models are supplied unpainted.

  6. The final video?! - 2023 in review

I've previously discussed my plan to take an indefinite hiatus from creating videos. However, since 2023 is nearly at an end I thought I'd bring the channel back from the dead for one night only to have a look back at 2023.

The video contains clips from all of my railway travel throughout the year including clips from my trip to Wales for the WHR 100 event, along with some clips from my first trip to the Ribble steam railway. And the usual stuff from my local lines.

Although I have no current plans for new videos I do hope to return to video-making at some point in 2024, although I don't think the current video format will return as I find it too much work.

All the best for 2024 and hopefully I'll see some of you out there!

  7. For a while now I've been interested in locomotives built by the Sentinel Wagon Works. As I'm sure people have noticed several of my more recent projects have been based on Sentinels as I have found them very enjoyable to research and model. My latest model, pictured below is based on the Y10 which in real life was standard gauge and used on the Wisbech and Upwell tramway before moving to Yarmouth for use on the docks there.

    y10.jpg?format=1500w

I always felt like the design would work as a narrow gauge loco. So, a few weeks back I set about creating my own narrow gauge version. I'm really pleased with how it turned out. Now I'm thinking I need to make some tramway style coaches for it to pull, but more on that later.

If you'd like your own then the kit can be purchased from the below links.

  8. It's been a little while since I posted anything new so to make up for it here are two new 009 models.

    DSC_0280.JPG?format=1500w

When I first got into 3D printing several years ago the first locomotive, I ever designed was a freelance Sentinel inspired by the Y3. Over the years that model has gone through a variety of upgrades and modifications. But I now felt it was time to redesign the model. I mainly concentrated my work on giving the model some underframe/axle detail which it previously didn’t have.

As for the livery I wanted to try something different to my usual coat of Humbrol “grass green”. So, I took inspiration from the County Donegal Railway’s “Phoenix” and went for a work worn weathered red & cream livery with black lining.

  9. After some careful reflection, I've made the decision to take a break from creating videos for YouTube. It's been obvious to me for a while that I wasn't enjoying the process. But, I forged on in the hopes that my mood would improve the more I did it. And unfortunately, it has not and I'm now feeling very burnt out and disheartened.

There are several factors that have contributed to this decision. But I don't want to go into too many details. I have every intention of continuing with my photography, so this page and my content aren't going anywhere. But there won't be any new YouTube videos for the foreseeable future. Although I do have some ideas for the future just right now I want to focus on my photography.

Thanks for your understanding in this matter.

  10. Hello!
I thought now was a good time to remind people that I also offer a 3D printing service. So if you have a model you've designed that you'd like printing or something you've downloaded from Thingiverse or Cults3D then I'd be happy to print this for you.

My prices for 4mm (OO/OO9) are from £15-£30 and all models would be printed in Resin. If you're interested I can be contacted either via the contact form on my website >> https://www.mattditch.photography/contact

or by private messaging my FB page MD Models - 3D Printed model railway kits

  11. North Eastern Railway style 0-6-0T locomotive body kit "Holderness"

    Holderness.jpg?format=1500w

For a very long time now I've had plans to make a model based on the proposed North Eastern Railway 0-6-0T for the never-built North Holderness Light Railway. I have taken a bit of artistic license with my model. But, I still think it captures the look of the proposed locomotive.

The model is designed to fit the Roco HOE 0-6-0 steam locomotive chassis (33241). However, it could be possible to use an alternative chassis as there is ample space inside the body.

If you'd like your own these can be bought from either my website >> https://www.mattditch.photography/online-shop-1/009009-narrow-gauge-north-eastern-railway-style-0-6-0t-locomotive-body-kit-holderness

    Or eBay >> https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134766522934?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=BFNBBPTARoq&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=BFNBBPTARoq&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

  12. A few years back I visited the Museum of Scottish Railways in Bo'ness Scotland. Whilst the majority of the exhibits there were standard gauge tucked away in a corner was one narrow gauge steam locomotive. The loco in question was a 3ft Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 tank named "Fair Maid of Foyers".
Unfortunately, I couldn't see a price tag and I doubted I could carry it back to the North East on the train. So, I came away with plenty of pictures and a plan to one day design something heavily inspired by the loco in 009. And here is the final result!

    barclay.jpg?format=1500w

The model is designed to fit the popular Bachmann N gauge Percy (not supplied)

You can purchase the model from either my Online shop >> https://www.mattditch.photography/online-shop-1/k056pisbj2l0wd4o1dwp4rddfcrdpd

    or eBay page >> https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134734844126?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=BFNBBPTARoq&sssrc=2566055&ssuid=BFNBBPTARoq&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

  13. New Video - Beamish Museum Autumn Transport Gala

The video was recorded on the first day of the museum's Autumn Transport Gala and focuses heavily on the operations on the narrow gauge railway. The event featured visiting locomotives Avonside 0-4-0T "Ogwen/Durham and Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0WT "Ashanti" which ran alongside the museums resident NG steam locomotives "Glyder/Grey" and "Samson". Coffee Pot No.1 was also in steam on the standard gauge colliery railway and, footage of this is included in the video.

  14. For once today's offering doesn't use a Kato chassis! (Yes I'm fine) A few weeks back I shared my all-new Skylark tram and today I'm sharing the original 0-4-2 version.

This is designed to fit the Bachmann 009 "Peter Sam" chassis (not supplied with the kit)

These can be purchased from either my website or eBay
