  1. Being an avid reader and collector of many railway books by the author John Hodge, I was deeply saddened to read in the introductory notes of his most recently published book, Railways and Industry on the Vale of Neath, that John Hodge had passed away prior to it's publication. Apparently his good friend and contributor, Stuart Davis was instrumental in bringing this final work to fruition. He has certainly done John Hodge proud, and for which we are extremely grateful to him.

To anyone interested in GWR history, it's heritage in South Wales and on the Welsh Boarders, John Hodge's books did so much to enlighten and inform. Not to mention unravel and provide some comprehension to the maze of railways occupying the valleys surrounding the South Wales Main Line. His wonderful series of books about railways and industry of the South Wales Valleys are rich and unparalleled in their content. I am truly sorry that he did not have the opportunity to complete the series. We can only hope that a knowledgable friend or colleague may take up his mantle, and remaining research, to complete his work.

Although I do not know John Hodge personally, I have had the pleasure of engrossing myself in much of his work for many years, and will really miss his greatly anticipated and forthcoming books. May I add my condolences to Johns family and friends, and let them know that his valuable research and literary contribution to the history of railways in Wales is unsurpassed, and will probably remain so. Thank you John Hodge rip.
