I love what they have done with the old shed (no guessing why!)
Really need to get down there at some point. I was living their whilst all the restoration work was going on but left by the time they had finished 😕

90% sure the Mogul door is the same size
Thanks both.
I engaged brain this afternoon and offered the smoke box door from a mogul upto a manor and they are both the same. Better to be safe than sorry!

Anyone know where to source a spare smokebox door from for these models? Nothing on the Dapol website, dcc supplies or peter's spares
It isn't a replacement but for a build project so could I get away with a Mogul door?

It's probably evident by the photo which option I have gone for with the telegraph poles. Ready to go just seemed that much easier though I will still have to do a custom build for where the wires cross from the coal stage to the shed.
I also went a bit OTT in pursuit of free shipping and bought some scatter to try out for the yard and cobalt slow action point motors!

it’s a great spot of yours to even notice that they had changed at the end of 1959, which to me says you have an eye for detail and are keen to get things looking right! It depends how rigid your time period is…weren’t the Dukedogs gone by 1960? So depends how wide you are willing to go. I think having any telegraph poles massively create the atmosphere of the steam railway though!I was originally looking for an indication of number of poles needed but turned into a "those are different" moment when looking at various angles of the coal stage.
I decided ready to go for ease, plus I choose 1960 for that transition between old GWR locos (Dukedog/Small Prairies) and new BR designs coming in but not being too dominant (no Std 4 tanks or moguls). From my notes I think all but 7812 were on the Cambrian pre 1960 and mostly long term residents too

Naturally, we all would like to ultimately see the Dapol arrangement for the 48-517 motion.
The good Captain (Kernow) very kindly donated a DJM 48xx chassis. I still have it here, but house moves, stroke & depression have postponed my (or, more correctly, Cpt. K's) post mortem. I still have my original DJM release, and it's highly likely I'll buy a Dapol autocoach to work with them.
As a slight aside, I wonder if Dapol might be inclined to factory-add some pickups to the autocoach & the new 48-517 models. The intent being to increase/improve the electrical pickup.
Sound into the coach baggage area? Not that I 'do' sound, you understand, but some do...
have a great week, folks.
Just checked that I remembered this correctly. Dapol's new auto coaches are already sound fitted!

The Bachmann set is so well presented, and a great way to get six matching choc & cream mk1s. They look superb behind the Accurascale Manor, which is actually powerful enough to pull a rake of 7 or 8 mk1s (unlike the Bachmann Manor!). The Autobuffet is perfect for running into Aberystwyth - I’m actually a little surprised that a manufacturer of any range of mk1s hasn’t done one off runs of the AB.Yes. I was very impressed with the set, even if the locos have been superseded by Dapol and Accurascale. They don't make 'em like they used too!
I've found the old thread that you started asking about other coaches that would have made up a rake so need to make a shopping list of what else I need!

Some random musing on telegraph poles for the layout after watching the latest New Junction video with Richard using the Woodland Scenics pre-wired system which looks very neat.
Looking at photos Aberystwyth seems to have had 2 types of poles that were renewed sometime around my modelling date of 1960, I haven't got an exact date from photos but it looks like winter 1959. The pre 1960ish poles have single cross bars and post 1960ish have no cross bars (photos below 👇)
Do I create work for myself and scratch build the newer poles with directly isolators on the poles correct to the period or take the easy way about it? Or I am simply going insane spending a good hour or so looking at telegraph poles?

Peto's registers are very good, having bought the Manor guide when researching what Manor I could renumber to what and get tenders right.
Its a shame there are only 3 (I believe King, Manor and 14xx) as they are really good books
Actual 14/48/58xx discussion. I'm not deciding which I'm going to preorder atm until we see actual models. The renders Dapol have shown look very good but obviously show the "generic" model. Still plenty of time to research and decide though :)

Not more wagons to buy! I'd only just got over the cost of buying many many many rapido V4/V6s and O11s!

An illness in the family has meant that I haven't been able to do any modelling recently so project like the 2251 have been put in hold.
I have tonight however managed to find some time to work on one little project I have been wanting to do for a while which is to model 4084 "Aberystwyth Castle". Yes I know GWR Castles never worked the Cambrian but to have a loco with the name Aberystwyth on your Aberystwyth layout, I for one can allow it 😁
To get 4084 right for the time period of the layout (1960) she needs a Collett tender but for whatever reason Hornby have never made a Castle with early style cylinders and L/C tender. Plenty in GW livery and the only BR option is with a Hawksworth tender and sound (Kidwelly Castle)
I found a cheap "Ince Castle" which has seen better days and being sold as spares/repairs, but the tender was in pretty good condition to be swapped over and then played the waiting game for "Kidwelly Castle" which I managed to get at a good price last week.
I've managed to successfully run in 4084 today (and play with the sound 😁)
And then swapped over the electronics into the donor Collett tender (which oddly doesn't have a DCC board, maybe the non-runner cause 🤔) and re glued the chimney.
The tenders are a good match in colour as both models were produced when Hornby models were still market toppers and didn't come in weird greens so the tenders match nicely despite being from different production batches.
Now to get some nameplates and properly model 4084 "Aberystwyth Castle"!

A little stock update. eBay had a 20% discount over the weekend so took the opportunity to do a little shopping and scored myself a Bachmann CCE set and Hornby Castle.
The CCE set is self explanatory. I've bought it more for the coaches rather than the locos. I'll be splitting the set up! 😯 Coaches will be kept as is, likely sell the 43xx on and possibly model the Manor as one under light maintenance so maybe take the valve gear off and do some surgery so the smoke box door is modelled open 🤔
The Castle was advertised as Spares/Repairs. It looks like the previous owner sat on it and then made some questionable repairs with horrible glue and painted the rods brown? I'll be stealing the tender off it to pair with a Hornby Kidwelly Hall and renumbering to 4084 "Aberystwyth Castle". Strangely Hornby have never produced a Castle with the early inside cylinder block with a BR Late crest and only one (Kidwelly) with early emblem, which has a Hawksworth tender so not accurate for Aberystwyth Castle, hence the need for a doner.
And yes, I know Castle's were too heavy for the Cambrian but having "Aberystwyth Castle" is an opportunity too good to miss!

Looking for some advice if possible on the below
Just been cutting some holes in the "eastern" fiddle yard section to lay track through and have the current conundrum. Do I make a fancy traverser point or just put a curve in the track and run them parallel with very tight clearances?
Operationally locos would come off shed (straight track) over a point (where the tracks cross) and then run back onto the coaling road (curved track). Also an ash train would be a regular movement on the coal road and the odd tool van on the shed road. Are small traversers friendly to short trains or derailment central?
The proper way feels like doing a traverser but the easy way is just lay track 🤔

If we do get an announcement at Ally Pally I wouldn't be surprised if it was some LT livered Panniers

My BR liveried examples arrived today 😄
As always very impressed with Rapido's wagons after buying the gunpowder and LMS opens. Only tiny weeny gripe is having to carve up the packaging I'd you want to fit the hybar

Mine haven't arrived yet
(Plus I don't have a full layout)
Will happily share photos though as they will be the BR versions including Breakdown Red version

Not sure this has been asked yet here. Would these wagons have easily made it onto other railway networks?
Thinking through workings onto the Highland Railway (for the Jones Goods to haul) as an example?

This is the colour version of the photo which the tram from Dapol stated on here they were basing the model on. Appears to be no lining on the tender from what I can see (though they may be using a different photo for reference now)

Is it cheeky to ask if/when we can expect a batch 2 of Manors.
Still over the moon with my 3 after 6 months and would happily add a couple more to the collection if the right models were announced!

Always feel free to make some steamy suggestions below!
Does Manors run 2 count?
Only other locos I'm interested in are:
GWR 2251 retool
LMS Stainer 3MT 2-6-2
Modelling the Cambrian network means I am pretty much covered with RTR locos.
Rolling stock however, where to begin.....
-
Surgery time!
I've removed all the chunky lamp irons from the loco body and cut the plastic ones away from the tender and replaced these with the Silver Tay Models equivalent along with the smokebox dart
The other thing has been to remove the moulded coal and add a real load. The original plan was to add a prototypical coal space but looking at reference photos all the stored 2251s have full tenders so I will initially fill the space with Liquid Gravity and then top it up with coal. No point going to a lot of effort just for it not to be visible at all!

BR Class 4MT Tank 2-6-4T
in Bachmann
Posted
Yes and no.
The NYMR has 2 4MT tanks. 80136 is currently in service and 80135 is under overhaul IIRC
