  1. We'll agree to differ then and leave it that shall we?
  2. PaulaDoesntDoRealSteamTrains. It's a bit like dog excrement - fake stuff can be amusing, real stuff utterly revolting (although there may well be some here who prefer real excrement to the fake stuff for all I know 😀).
  3. It's not a wind-up or April Fools joke. It's my honest opinion. That it may not align with your preconceived ideas of how someone who likes to play with toy trains would react to being ripped off and covered in filth and pollution is not my problem.
  4. So nothing we don't already know (or can easily find out). I had a play with it a while ago. Not impressed. Much has been made about its ability to generate computer programs. However the code it generates isn't that great. I was reading about some it generated where it assumed March has only 30 days. Not impressive. I think I'll stick to writing my own code as I've been doing professionally since the early 1980s.
  5. Went this morning. What a horrible, horrible place. I only really went to see the Gauge 1 layout. It took me absolutely ages to find it and I had to endure significant exposure to the filth from the steam locos to get to and from the shed where they'd hidden the Gauge 1 layout. When I got home I had to have shower and put all my clothes in the wash due the stench of the pollution I'd been exposed to. A nasty experience at a rip-off price. Hated it and will never ever go back there for any reason.
  6. I've never heard of a CAD program which can do scanning. Some (many?) can import images so I think your best approach would be to scan your original document(s) and import them into your CAD program then create sketches over the top of the image. .
  7. Am I the only one who finds the spamming of this forum by TT120 fanboys annoying and rude in the extreme?
  8. Mostly scratch-built although because I don't have a shed/workshop I'm extremely limited in the size (and weight!) of machine tools I can have. My tiny lathe (Proxxon FD150/E) is absolutely fine for most of the lathe work but simply does not have the power to machine the wheels so I'll be buying them ready-machined rather as raw castings. He also machines them to fit the square-ended axles he supplies which will eliminate quartering issues. I'll be buying the boiler in too. Again my lathe isn't big enough plus I can buy a boiler cheaper than I can buy a decent quality propane torch big enough to silver solder the boiler up. Plus the commercial boiler will come with a boiler certificate so I won't need to go through the testing/certification process. I'll be buying the main frames for the loco and tender. I can get these laser-cut for not much more than I could buy the steel for. There's a few things like chimney, steam dome and tender axle boxes which I will be buying too but there's still an awful lot of cutting, turning, milling, drilling, bending and soldering to be done in order to arrive at a finished loco.
  9. I too find this thread inspirational (as I do the other threads by the many excellent builders here on RMWeb). I decided early last year that wouldn't buy any more locomotives; if I want a loco I'll have to build it myself. Thoughts of what to build? A 7F perhaps? Or maybe something a bit less mainstream such a North Staffordshire loco? In the end though I'm building a 4F. But this one isn't in 4mm, or even 7mm.; it's Gauge 1 live steam.
  10. Can't have too many Black Fives 🙂 Or Duchesses. Or Patriots. Or Jubilees. Or ...
  11. Cats have more sense than to get involved in such silly debates 🙂
  12. If you want quality which will outlive the guarantee period then buying stuff produced in some anonymous Chinese factory is probably best avoided.
  13. I went on Sunday and really enjoyed the show 🙂 It's really vindicated my decision to get into Gauge 1 live steam.
