  1. So, it's been a while, so what have I been up to? Not much, honestly, progress has been very slow. However, I have acquired the two 1.1 x 1.2m plywood for the west side of the station, and have been collecting up the sparse plans I can. The best track plan I can find is this one, It's doesn't have the sharpest lines, and may be in the wrong language, yet opposed to my other alternative, it includes the tracks all the way to the tunnels, and the goods yard is included, for way down the line when it comes. Speaking of which, I have not found one picture of the goods yard yet, so any pictures of any of the station would be helpful! One of the main issues is lack of a scale. The main solution I've found is to buy a digital copy of the roof plans with such scale from Network Rail, which will set me back £15. Even then, this less accurate plan may be hard to get a direct reference to determine an exact length. Can anyone advise? James
  2. I'm slightly confused over the two unskirted LNER lined variants- there is a partially skirted which only has the cowcatchers, however the 'no skirts' version also has them. I thought the fully unskirted version did not have these, and the only difference I can see from their pictures is that the fully unskirted one has the chains over the cowcatcher. Can anyone advise?
  3. Sameconclusions drawn then- it's very nice to see the intricate motion gear, but with skirts on they really do look the part
  4. Just wondering- based on looks alone, do people prefer the model skirted or unskirted?
  5. Hang on- are you sure you put your video and the real footage the right way round? I've been scratching my head for ages trying to figure out which is which!
  6. I have been thinking about it... I'll have to do some research into what I'd get out of either of them with a membership
  7. Thank you both for your comments! Very wise words that I'll be sure to heed, even if mine doesn't involve Rustons being hoisted apart and being put back on wheels like yours! That means so much coming from the architect of GQS, and yes Hornby have been quite generous to me this year with their A3s and P2s and NBR coaches, however for my LNER 4/6 wheelers they'll be coming from Hattons in the proper pre-war brown, and I don't like what Hornby have done stealing Hattons' market, so if they were to decide to produce NBR stock, I'd place an order there without hesitancy! On another note, I have two questions: 1) How would I go about printing off a track plan from NLS to the right scale? 2) Apart from the coronations, does anyone know of A1/3/4 names that would pop up around 64A/B, apart from the obvious coronations? Are there any RTR for now? Thanks for the warm reception so far, James.
  8. Hello, this is not much of a serious plan but I am considering the idea... Before the Manuel to Slamannan portion was closed in the 1930s, the Bo'ness junction saw traffic down the branch line from the NBR and at one point the CR, whilst up above expresses thundered past on the E&GR / NBR / LNER such as the Queen of Scots. I think it would look nice as a model, but it might need a lot of space because of the large yard where there was even a turntable. (Side note, if I wanted to make a small micro layout of a branch line shed on the Borrowstounness and Slamannan Railway, does anyone know where I should be looking? Here's the overall picture: https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17&lat=55.97803&lon=-3.65573&layers=168&b=1 And my new topic on modelling Waverley up the line, the thread this is sort of like the ugly sister of: Looking forward to hearing from people, James
  9. Hello, my name is James and I've been really getting in to the hobby properly this past year. I've spent a long time making small dioramas and researching constantly, and for a while now I've known when and where I want to model. The where portion is clear in the title, but the when of it may leave you thinking it is very broad. I want to essentially be able to model a NBR scene with N15s and D30s and J36s, and also an LNER scene with A4s pulling the Coronation and A1/3s pulling the Flying Scotsman, and of course the P2s (today when Lord President was announced I was very happy- it'd been on my wishlist for ages! The progress on this will not be fast , but I thought I might as well do it now to get everything together. I'm also setting up a topic for my other idea which is Manuel junction : the link will appear here when I set it up The overall plan is to firstly focus on the west portion, like the other popular layout on this site, but expand it further when my first bit is complete. Bear in mind that could be years :). This first section will have the baseboard space of a standard B&Q 2.2m x 1.1 plywood sheet cut into 2 squares which can be stored on top of each other in this handy corner I have in a room in my house. It will hopefully span from the art gallery to where the canopy closes up after the two ramps going down into the station stop. I'd like to incorporate the Faller Road System slightly, and have room for a portion of the goods yard (I may have to have an extra section at the front) . First thing first is of course the track plan. I've found numerous examples from the time but I'm not sure how I'd be able to blow these up. And so a new thread is born! I look forward to any comments on what a bad idea this is or something else along those lines James
  10. Additionally, Hornby are acting like they have never- seen before idea to use a magnet to control the lighting, and they're completely right! Cough cough Rapido Trains Dynamometer Car, cough cough. What a trustworthy company Hornby is becoming!
  11. Goodness this is heated! But rightly so, it's either a very unfortunate coincidence, or something very crafty and sly has gone on here- and realistically we've all got the idea it was probably the latter. Food for thought- I wonder if they might have chosen something else if by the time they started designing these they had already had their tiff with Rails of Sheffield too.. I think that the Hattons examples look much more realistic and detailed, but unfortunately it's the NBR versions I need. I'm 100% sure there would also be others thinking of getting the Hornby NBR versions but would change their mind if Hattons said they would produce them in their fourth wave.... and at this point no one would care abut it encroaching on Hornby's territory! James
  12. Oh my goodness- never before has a model of such bare bones, I suppose, moved me in such a way that it has conveyed the sheer grandure and beauty of railway infrastructure. I have to say this is definitely my new favourite RMWeb thread, only a few hours ago discovering your magical microcosm of 50s Manchester recreated in Spain. On deciding a place to base my main layout, I knew it had to be pre grouping, and I was fascinated about the sort of ying and yang metaphor these many old different pre grouping railways portrayed around Scotland, Lancashire, and my home county Yorkshire. I live not a ten minute walk away from Queensbury tunnel, and after deciding on Glasgow Central, them Waverley, then another 50 other grand termini to model, I decided to make a small bookshelf diorama for the time being, being able to replicate quite accurately a station with a single span arch roof such as Bradford Exchange, or St Pancras, or Manchester Exchange. I have been looking for a thread on one of these stations such as this for weeks, and was astounded when I found it out of the blue earlier. It shows an amazing quality words can only just describe. I stayed up hours to reach the end of this thread and was very sorry to hear about your arthritis and the sacrifices you have had to make - being a young modeller relatively new to the hobby it's hard to imagine, but as the bottom of all your posts say, you have to keep optimistic; what a great message to carry through the year we have all had. Im sorry for rambling on for a long time but I just want to know that this is beautiful and also very inspirational- you've proved that a bookcase diorama of this station would be stupid, but for my big project the brown north British locos at Waverley are becoming Brunswick green and maroon.... James
  13. Sorry if I was unclear - I would love a scan of the instructions please because I have decided to build it ( whilst getting a half refund because of the confusion- not bad! ) along with the comet chassis. Being new to kit building, there's no doubt it'll look like Crewe outsourced to Wonky Works when kit comes to the wheels
