Sadly, even today (July 2022) there is too little passenger traffic from which to recoup investment. Freight has such fragile finances that, again, little or nothing could be recouped. Diverting the Norwich to Nottingham service via Spalding and Sleaford would have just made the journey longer and less appealing. But 'still remember that final day of operation: took a Cambridge to Doncaster train formed of Cross Country diesel unit, complete with Anglia TV camerman in the cab, to Lincoln and return. We passed on both journeys Cl.40.024 on a Cleethorpes to Cambridge special.

Presumably Colas are having more 'luck' with their '70s, or else they are tied to them by a quite different agreement to that of Freightliner. But even in a diminishing container transport market, that's one heck of lot of capital wasting away in Leeds. That said, whether Colas or Ftl, 70's emit far fouler black fumes than the ubiquitous '66s.
