  1. I’ve joined this forum in the hope some kind people will understand my plight. My husband passed away and I’m left with a lot of OO gauge items I’m not sure what to do with. I will be posting pictures of things I have no idea what they are and hope you can tell me what they are and I can do my research. Thanks in advance.

Very sorry for your loss. I often think what my wife would do in such circumstances, brought home very recently by the sudden passing of my Brother in Law, where my wife's sister is going through a similar situation (though not with model trains!)

If your husband was a member of a local club or had modelling friends then that would be your first port of call - I assume that these are not options hence why you have joined a model railway forum?!

Assuming you are looking to sell the items and get the best price (rather than giving away, donating to charity, or maybe even keeping yourself!?) then you have three main options I think:

      1. Sell each item individually using eBay or other similar resources, like RMWeb classifieds (or even take a stand at a toy fair - probably all cancelled at the moment though)

      2. Sell the whole collection in one go using eBay or similar.

      3. Sell the whole collection to a specialist second-hand dealer.

Option one will likely get you the best prices but it will take up a lot of your time and require you to know what you are selling (with which I am sure lots of people on here would be glad to help). It could also take ages to sell everything, particularly if there are less saleable items.

Option two will still require you to know what you are selling and roughly what it is all worth but shifts it all in one go. Still a bit of hassle for you to sort out.

Option three is probably the least hassle for you. A quick scan through the pages of any model railway magazine from the newsagents will show you many adverts from specialist second-hand dealers who will come and value the whole collection. Many model railway retailers also offer such services. I have never used myself but I'm sure others on here will have. If you just wanted the quickest most painless solution then my advice would be to get a few valuations to compare and then select the one that you prefer, either based on price or convenience etc.

All the best of luck and I hope you get the solution you want.

Sorry for your loss. I think what we need first are a few photos of what there is, as what some of us would deem small collections, might be considered extensive by our other halves... (my wife would have a fit if she opened my spreadsheet and looked at the actual number of items and their original value of my own collection!)

Personally I have traded-in with a couple of retailers and been happy with what I got for my items. But beware, my father-in-law disposed of his brother's die-cast bus collection as a job lot to a dealer, then regretted it when he actually saw what some of the items were worth later.

If you invest in a copy of BRM - British Railway Modelling though and scan the ads, you will find several dealers who will collect and apraise the collection.

Where are you located roughly?      Someone on here may be able to recommend someone fairly local to you who can assist.

Disposing of a loved ones model trains is never easy and often we have been approached in Milton Keynes MRS to give advice to those who find themselves in the same position as yourself.

Someone I have used to rehome collections (large or small) is Elaine from Elaine's Trains. Elaine is very used to dealing with people in your unfortunate position and may well be worth an email or phone call to see if she can be of any assistance in this case. Elaine is based in Lincolnshire and travels to view collections etc.

      Email:  elaine@elaines-trains.co.uk

      Website: https://www.elaines-trains.co.uk/

Phone details etc. are given on the website.

I have no other connection than being a customer who has both bought and sold (on behalf of others) over several years.

Whatever you decide I appreciate the difficulty you face and wish you well in your endeavours.
