I've certainly seen worse Neverwassa's and probably worth a tenner for novelty value. It was more the seller trying to pass it off as some sort of Triang variety in the blurb with a price to match. Thing is I get the feeling someone will buy it - there was 5 people watching before I posted it on here😂

The asking price is definitely something else...!

A quick heads-up to the Triang Hornby collectors on here that one of the holy grails has popped up on eBay - The Stroudley 0-4-0 Terrier! From memory this had a production run of half a day when one of the Margate painters came back from the pub drunk. Probably best to get a bid in now before someone pays the BIN price of 350 pounds

    Mr. 99p!

Hate to say it, but I quite like that!

I'd happily pay the postage price (£9.99!) for it...

Although, as noted above (good examples of) the Tri-ang 0-4-0s have gone up in price lately.

  3. Another Gostude bargain...

£2500 for a Tri-ang NSW Sydney Red Rattler 4 car set.

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/364725878845

Of course, if you knew he paid £900 plus buyers premium (total £1143) you'd appreciate just how much of a profit he's aiming to make...

Vectis Auctions | Triang R450/R451 NSW Suburban 4-Car EMU Set

I'm pretty sure if paying £2500 for some vintage Tri-ang, I'd not want it damaged by stacking it on top of itself, pantographs and all.

Most of my Locos are Hornby or Lima but I'm quite taken with this mainline item. I know little about them. Are they easy to service and clean? I'm guessing spares are pretty much no-go nowadays. I like the idea of collecting a mainline loco or two as my mother worked for Palitoy. Sadly I got Action Man for Christmas, not Mainline!

This is only about five miles from where I live so hopefully would be able to collect

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/204624380742

Edited to add, here is another I like the look of but it seems expensive to me, especially considering the condition. Are Airfix good? This is not so local

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/315090814476

The Mainline ones are nice models, and were later adapted/sold by Bachmann. Mainline ones were designed with split axles, so you have two wheels separated by a plastic bush in the middle of the axle - these are prone to failing, although new parts are available to fix them.

The Airfix ones are all tender drive, and that one is (in my view) optimistically priced. A mint boxed one would sell for rather less (I'd say half that price!)...

Edit: either are roughly as user-servicable as most other models from the same period. 🙂

70% in my case.  I guess eBay have some sort of AI formula which decides who receives which offers, depending on your individual recent sales history.

80% for me 🙂. I wonder how they decide!

Todays eBay annoyance… a few weeks ago I sold a loco to a non paying bidder.

Relisted it yesterday as a buy it now, and a buyer with a suspiciously similar username to the first non paying bidder has pressed buy it now, and so far not paid… 😶

    I don't think that's eBay madness.

Sensible start price, and the seller doesn't claim it is Airfix, but that's they think it is intended for the Airfix [kit] body...

I assume it is for the Airfix Prairie as it came with a part body

And just in case anyone was waiting on tenterhooks... my Caprotti Black 5 (high running board) arrived this lunchtime... with a posted date of 2 days ago (seller must have marked it despatched a week before they sent it). 😆

I'm currently experiencing Yodels tracking and to be honest I think I'd rather not know where it is😂.

Parcel was dropped off by seller on 28th December

Got to sellers Yodel local depot 29th

Got to yodel national hub 2nd Jan

Got to my local yodel depot 3rd jan and still there currently

One Yodel parcel I received last year was dropped off by a GSF (car parts) delivery driver who found it on the pavement a mile or two away...

If you are selling as an executor or on behalf of an executor, then quite possibly yes.  However if you have inherited models (already taken into account as part of any inheritance tax calculation) and then decide to sell some or all, I think you are very much on your own.

In that case, they would be counted as 'personal possessions'.

    From the HMRC website:

    Quote

Did you only sell personal possessions?

Personal possessions are physical items that belong to you, such as clothes, furniture or jewellery.

Items that you bought with the intention of selling to make a profit are not classed as personal possessions.

This guidance appears unchanged, as the new rules only relate to the obligation of platforms such as eBay to report on sellers:

  10. It's an interesting one.

It seems eBay have already been providing this data voluntarily since 2010.

    https://community.ebay.co.uk/t5/Seller-Central/Are-your-taxes-in-order-eBay-now-sending-sales-data-to-HMRC/m-p/7517171#M655772

I'm a little worried, as I've sold a fair chunk of my collection, mostly older locos I didn't use or projects, in the last year or two to fund a wedding and a house move. The total sale price has certainly been above the £1k threshold.

In my favour, much of what I've sold 've owned since childhood, and the value of my sales month on month is winding down as I'm running out of things I want to sell.

I don't know how much proof they would need that I am having a clearout, rather than buying and selling purely for profit.

This has been up for a long time -  more than 6 months I believe. Not surprised it's proving hard to shift. The seller would be better advised to get an auction house to do it.

If they get an auction house to do it, chances are they'll end up with half (or less) the market value if sold individually or in small lots on eBay.

There won't be many individuals out there with £10k to spend in one go on Grafar (or indeed any model railway) items for themselves, and I'd imagine OO Graham Farish isn't as widely collected as Tri-ang or Hornby Dublo...

The biggest problem with that lot is that as-is, it's not possible to tell what's there - it could be £20k worth of immaculate boxed locos, many of which are rare and could command huge prices, or it could be a few locos in good condition (the 4 shown look good!) and a mixed lot of rolling stock.

  12. Today's festive frustration...

Sold an item to a US buyer after 4PM on Sunday 24th Dec.

Wake up this morning (27th Dec) to the message "Did you mail the package yet?". No 'Hello' or anything else, just that.

I emailed back explaining that the Post office isn't open on Sundays, or bank holidays including Christmas day and Boxing day...

Wonder whether I'll regret posting this one...

  13. As I like to have models of obscure prototypes, I was very pleased to pick this one up the other day for just over £30 posted..

GWR outside frame 0-6-2 pannier tank loco.

(Crane is behind it, it's not a crane loco!).

    IMG_2017.jpeg

Seems the prototype was a rebuild of an old saddle tank loco, and only one was ever built in this form.

As it's an old build (Tri-ang wheels and XO4 motor) it is a bit crude compared to modern standards but, of course, runs beautifully.

Not ebay but I had a package from Slaters go walkies - there was no information on the tracking at all, it simply said would update when delivery attempted. Long story short - new neighbours had it delivered in error, and passed it to the old neighbours with other items, then they passed it to me.

If unscrupulous could probably claim for it being lost in the post.

Regular 1st/2nd class only updates when delivery attempted.

Tracked 24/48 services are updated throughout their journey.

Both services rely on the postie scanning the parcel when they deliver. If they don't, the tracking won't complete and (in theory) unscrupulous people could claim the items aren't delivered.

Well, that worked well ... for a while. Emboldened by my first experience with RM's collection service, I booked a second parcel to be picked up today. Sitting at home this afternoon I was puzzled to get an email from RM saying that they'd picked it up ... when it hadn't moved from its spot on my desk!

I gave up using the collection service. Frequently they just don't arrive to collect.

Our local delivery office is short staffed and we don't get daily deliveries.

Those two things are probably linked.

If buying on eBay, they don't seem to add the 16p fee for dropping the items at a post office.   🙂

To be honest, I don't know why anyone selling on eBay doesn't buy the postage labels on there. Tracking is auto updated, prices are cheaper than buying in a post office, and you can print labels or get a QR code to have scanned and a label printed in your local post office.

Strangely enough, shortly after posting it did occur to me that such a service would be invaluable for anyone who might struggle to assemble kits.

But given how quickly a Metcalfe kit can be put together, I am left wondering what the “hourly rate” might be to do so?

Equivalent to that of a dentist or *gasp* a call out plumber?! 🫢😆

What I did find interesting was that they seem to have a similar assembly cost for Metcalfe kits and Kingsway models, despite one taking rather longer to build (due to not being pre-cut!).

The Kingsway models are lovely kits, but not being pre-cut they do need more skill and time to build well 🙂

He's really lost the plot... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/256253836234

    "Professional Grader Me"

"These are highly sought after models in their own right and hard to find, advertised in used condition by some railway suppliers at over £40 each ... so to have unique ones for not much more can only be considered an absolute bargain"

25% more isn't "not much more" and when you look at selling history they go for £15 an up. It's the same graffiti transfers, just arranged differently as well 😅 not to mention the wagons are completely mint underneath the transfers - very much unlike the example prototype photos they have kindly included to highlight the difference...

Amusingly, despite claiming people shouldn't watch his items and that they will simply be removed after 30 days and sold elsewhere, my browser tells me the price for at least one of them has been reduced...

Never seen one of those, rather pretty really for its age, even if only a collector might see its value at one and a half grand.

I assume that it could run off OHLE where available rather than the rails, but the pantograph on the dummy presumably does nothing.

I wouldn't say the condition was all that bad given that both pantographs appear intact, apart from its poor running (not unduly important to a collector?).  Absence of the box is probably more important to collectors.  Sorry, but I still can't get my head around collecting for its own sake.

For most collectors, I'd imagine the mis-matching colour (meaning it's part of two sets) would be a drawback too.

  19. I've been wanting to post a few of my locos in this thread for a while...

Here's one of my favourites, a Thompson L1. Sadly, I can't lay claim to the build, but it runs superbly.

    IMG_1262.JPG.2e326950c567f9d77d2bd6228fca96c0.JPGIMG_1263.JPG.bb7f34ed1142616afdc20aba227905c1.JPG

You might be looking and asking what relevance this has to the thread... but it is based on a Tri-ang Princess chassis and retains the XO4 motor!

But this is not what I offer. I clearly state in my listing what my service offer is. I firstly state I try and post within 1 working day of payment (sometimes its the same day) and its first Class. Low value items are sent 1st class, if I think an item will not sell for much, it goes 1st class with proof of posting, if I have to spend extra sending it recorded I have made more than expected so happy to absorb the cost. Likewise if something I charged for a recorded service needs Special Delivery again I am happy to absorb the extra

I think the point is/was that the tracked 48 and tracked 24 services offer higher levels of compensation for a lower price than the signed for/recorded services.

I switched to the tracked 48 service (from 2nd class) during the strikes over Christmas, and must say I think it's worth the extra money (compared to second/first class), if only to have the higher compensation and more information on the tracking system. 🙂

As for postage, which should be seen a post and packing, just look at what auction houses charge !!!

    This is very true.

As a seller, I don't charge for packing (everything is re-used from things sent to me, or boxes I scrounge from the supermarket.

As a buyer, excessive P&P charges really put me off buying something...

There's rarely a correlation between P&P price and quality of packaging materials, in my experience.

It's certainly rare and I've only seen one on a collectors site, but you have to wonder if that's because the vast majority slip through un-noticed. If you find one of them in the loft, it just looks like a bog-standard Triang diesel.

For what it's worth, it's also rarer than the standard one because it says 'transcontinental' on the side, rather than 'Tri-ang Railways' :)

It's actually worth slightly more than the second person is prepared to pay.

That's the whole point of auctions.

Buy-it-nows aren't auctions, they are classified adverts. :)

Also, if an auction only has one bidder, then it's worth whatever the start price (or reserve) is!
