So, I took my two decoders to the club rooms today to have a play about. 8pin definitely doesn't fit in a Bachmann 08, regardless of removing the lead weight, so that scuppered that one. The 21pin fitted nicely into my newer release Dapol 73, speaker enclosure was the largest possible  and even had room for the stay alive powerbank too. App on a friend's phone connected to the decoder fine, and all was going well till the sound file install. Five attempts and it wouldn't load. Not sure if it was the fact that the layout it was sat on had a LOT of stock running at the time, but after two and a bit hours I gave up the ghost and took the decoder out. I'll likely give it another try at home. Anyone else had this issue at all???

    Nathan...

Spec someone else has already responded likewise, but just in case:

I have the 8 pin TXS sound controller fitted ok in a Bachmann Branchline 08 (32-115A 08021).

It is a squeeze. Controller is vertical at front end, speaker with smallest enclosure is at 90° between it and the innards, adjacent to the the 8 pin socket.

Careful manipulation of the loco wiring out of the way to make space was necessary.

    Obviously other models might differ.

Attached pic provides an approx idea of the positioning.

  2. Sorted!

    Should anyone be interested.

I decide to pop the motor out to separate the possibility that the issue was somewhere in the drive chain or power supply. Indeed the motor stall stalled at low revs and wouldn't spin again without intervention.

A few drops of lubricant inside and out to the drive shaft and the motor is now running smoothly without stalling.

Sorry, I hadn't noticed any replies to this. It's sorted now. I replaced the motor with a smaller one, and a nylon worm. It runs even better than it did before and by getting rid of the huge motor I was able to fit DCC sound into the loco.

    @Ruston

I may be looking at replacing a Bachmann 08 motor. Could you share the details for the smaller motor you used please?

    Thanks

  4. Hello hive mind.

I've looked and not found, so far, the clues I was hoping to find.

I expect that there are heaps of experience of this type of issue.

    I've acquired a used Bachmann 08

When it runs, it runs, fast, slow . .

Sometimes, only sometimes, when stopped, it won't go. Likewise at a crawl it will stop dead. It's as if power to the motor has cut out, no motor hum.

Most times a tap or a gentle push will get it going.

Of major concern, sometimes that doesn't work, no amount of power, tapping, prodding help, but with the body off, a gentle push on the motor worm gear or the fly wheel and off it goes.

Not, obviously, a very practical situation.

Is this a replacement motor job or is there something else I should be checking?

I'm pretty new to this hobby, so please excuse my potential ignorance here.

    Thanks
