I’m probably missing the point badly here, but what is the advantage of tubeless tyres for ‘ordinary’ use?

I sort-of get it for those people who either road race or road ride with a view to maximising their average speed, so every gram not carried up hill helps, but for the rest of us?

There's no advantage to rolling resistance or weight by running tubeless.  If that is your primary concern then tubular tyres or latex tubes are used. The only advantage to tubeless when racing is that a puncture might not end your race. You can run lower pressure, so in theory, there is improved comfort and you won't get a pinch puncture from rough roads or potholes. As with a lot things on the bike, it is great until it doesn't work. If you have to carry a spare tube and tools then there isn't really any advantage in my opinion. I have a couple of sets of wheels setup with GP5000 tubeless and I am happy to use them for shorter rides. Anything long and/or away from civilization I'm not sure I'd be setting out without a spare tube and tools. I have had one puncture on tubeless where a thorn pierced the tyre completely, the sealant had dried up during Summer months and I didn't keep on top of it. Also, on some wheels getting the tyre off/on to fit the tube can be a nightmare because the tyre has to be so tight on the rim and you need more tools....

You pay your money and take your choice.

Have you tried Rumney Models' milk tanks?

    Hi,

Yes I have, they are superb but aren't full body kits - as far as I am aware? You still need both the whitemetal and lost wax castings, that's what I have done with my couple - Rumney chassis and the rest from the David Geen kit.

It would be a shame if the milk tanker kits disappeared.

    Thanks

As above, there is no stock for the siphons as the variations are too great to stock every combination. David's stock is mainly the wagon kits and etches for the Geen and Hayes range. It has been possible to complete some coach kits from stock, but not in all cases. I have made up a small quantity of Tool vans, Dreadnought and E78 in the Hayes range recently, but the main Geen range needs castings producing which is not possible at the moment.

    Hi Mike,

I don't suppose you know anything of the availability of David's milk tanker kits?

    Thanks,

  4. Hello,

As per the title I am looking for some specific articles from the following editions of Railway Modeller magazine:

    May 1999

    Jan 1981

    Oct 1980

    April 1979

    Feb 1979

If you have copies of these please get in touch. I do not need the whole magazine, just a specific article from each of the above.

    Thanks,

    Alastair

  5. Hello,

Does anybody have any, preferably unstarted, Colin Craig FFA/FGA Container Flat wagon kits in their kit collection that they would be willing to part with?

    Thanks,

    Alastair

  6. Hello,

Does anyone know what the options are for modelling air brake hoses on wagons? For instance the two hoses on this wagon:

I've tried searching and can't find anything suitable in the mainstream trade. Does anyone know if any Bachmann/Hornby/Helijan spares would be suitable for these?

    Thanks,

    Alastair

  7. Hello,

Does anyone have a spare Bachmann/Mainline Macaw B or Bogie Bolster C wagons? Any condition/livery. Will receive completely new underframe and bogies so really only interested in the top-half of the wagon. Can be unboxed.

If you have one laying spare then please get in touch. I have a few spare bits that need to be put to use.

    Thanks,

    Alastair

  8. All sorted thanks to the very kind polybear.

    Hello,

Does anyone have a copy of Modellers Backtrack Vol 3 Number 1 (April/May 1993) either a spare copy or their own.

I'm interested in a particular article from that edition (Fidczuk, Peter. Air Ministry tank wagons. Part 1. The War years. p30-7.)

If anyone can assist please get in touch.

    Thanks, Alastair

  9. Hello,

Just wondering if anyone has any of the following 4mm-scale spare kits or van bodies:

Ratio LMS 12T Van (Ref 572)

Parkside Dundas 12T Fruit Van LMS Design (Ref PC42)

Parkside Dundas Plywood 12T Van BR Condition (PC06A)

    Thanks,

    Alastair

  10. Hello,

As the topic suggests, I am looking for any spare Exactoscale parrallel wheel bearings. The measurements are 1mm ID and 2mm OD, the old product code with C&L was E4CW 603.

Please get in touch if you have any that you do not need.

    Thanks,

    Alastair

  11. Hello,

Looking for a spare Bachmann Jinty body. Livery not crucial, overall condition likewise not that important.

Would consider a complete model if a non runner etc - I have a spare etched chassis waiting for this one if some kind soul can help me out.

    Thanks,

    Alastair

  12. Some kit manufactures clearly have a gift for writing instructions and I really don't think it's an easy as it looks - producing drawings and writing clear and concise English are skills in their own right after all, let alone designing a complicated kit. Adding in some dry humor at times is an added bonus.

So credit where credit is due:

Grade A+, top marks awarded to High Level Kits & Rumney Models whose instructions are second to none in my opinion. Clear diagrams and lots of photographs and details.

Grade B Highly commended marks to Backwoods Miniatures, Martin Finney & Malcolm Mitchell.

Grade B- Could try harder to Brassmasters, who produce some really excellent kits but the complexity of some elements of the kits could benefit from some more detailed drawings at times. Their instructions can be wordy (apparently, a picture paints a thousand words) but perhaps that is all part of the fun, testing the builder? However, the prototype notes included are simply superb and most helpful, a real bonus (reflecting the amount of research the BM team do when designing their kits?). To be fair, their 4F kit does include a lot of 3D drawings in place of the text and the supplied CDs with photographs are very helpful..

It's all part of the fun at times.

  13. Following this thread with interest, really enjoying the modelling on show.

Spurred on by seeing some old signal box diagrams of the boxes at Worcester, I'm looking to learn more about the railways of Worcester during the "steam era", do you have any book recommendations that cover the history of this period? A quick search of a popular online book retailer showed there are a few of the Vic Mitchell books available but I don't always find the standard of the photographic reproduction is that high with those (just my opinion!).

So Killybegs, can you recommend any specific titles or other works you have found invaluable in the research for this layout?

    Thanks.
