I generally model British Railways steam/diesel transition era, but I have active interest in the British railways scene from the 50's to the present day. I also enjoy visiting heritage sites and active in railway photography. I was a one time fitter for BR at Glasgow & Derby Loco' works then at Toton TMD. My avatar shows me in front of D8 (44008) one of Toton's long term allocation when I was there. My 'Last great project' is a long dreamed of portrayal of Dent station on the Settle-Carlisle line.

  1. Hi Brian, I concur with your observation, it actually looks okay at eye level but when looking down you can see it's just pretty acute, I think from memory I was attempting to fit the platform when it was a full rectangle, I then 'very' roughly cut off the corner seen in the photo but never got round to either dressing it into a curve nor altering the track approach, thanks for pointing that out as I may well have overlooked it. Cheers Mike
  2. Part 3... In the opposite direction BR 9F No. 92009 heads a mixed mineral working of 30 loaded 16T wagons, from memory I think around half a million of these wagons were built by BR. From the sublime to the mundane, a mere single coach push-pull service runs off the branch and terminates in No.1 platform behind Ivatt 2-6-2T No. 41222. The coach is a brass kit. Next jobs are to ballast the running lines, work on the station structure and test the MPD and Goods yard area before ballasting, so wish me luck - more boring mundane chores! That's it for now guys. Regards Mike
  3. Part 2.... A few more views of the MPD area My usual style of control panel A few views of the passing 'Up' Mail train headed by 46256 'Sir William A Stanier FRS' Part 3 follows...
  4. Hi all, Apologies again for the delay, 'things' just took over my time as they do! Here are a few photos of the current state of affairs, the above shows the mid-station area with 'down' platform on left, then centre road and 'up' platform on the right with terminating bays far right. The LNWR style buildings are placed to show the proposed arrangement for the platform and the overhead station entrance on a roadway above. This view shows the goods yard with coal road, loading platform and goods shed. Platforms are taking shape I've had this goods shed some 30 years and its still not finished! Overall view of the station approach Overall view of the station exit A view of the Motive Power Depot, trackwork has not yet been through thorough testing and tweaking and therefore not yet painted View showing the turntable and coal stage in place. Again the two building must be approaching 30 years old but they are at least finished! Part 2 to follow shortly..... Mike Mike
  5. Hi all, Again, apologies for the absence, I just can't get back into the swing of things. I have been doing bits here and there though. The wiring is completed at last and there is an ongoing period of test running prior to ballasting. I laid the platforms several weeks ago and all the stock I usually use to check clearances went through without issue until I ran a Class 08 and the coupling rods jammed! Some modification later and all is well, so this will be my preferred test loco in future. I have a lot of catching up to do on RMWeb but will post a few photos over the weekend if the heat dies down a bit. I hope I get my MOJO back soon haha! Regards Mike
  6. Thanks guys, I will get some wiring done over the next couple of weekends but I think it will be during the Xmas break before its all finished. I'm looking forward to the scenics stage which is my favourite part of the hobby.
  7. Hi all, I'm only a week late in posting but there is something better to show than last weeks offering would have been. The tracklaying is now complete and the electrics for the main running lines was completed some time ago which leaves just the MPD and goods yard areas to wire up, these should be quite simple as they will be mainly all 'live' with selected isolated areas and will have separate local control rather than leading to a main control panel. Looking along the 'Up' direction we see the MPD area now laid adjacent to the 'Down' main. Looking along the 'Down' direction the small goods yard features a road for the goods shed, a loading bay road and a coal drop road. Here I attempted to build a 'tandem' point but gave up so a pair of right hand points were built instead. The goods yard is only a small affair but should be adequate. The MPD buildings are over 20 years old and have featured in several of my layouts, the main building had a roof rebuild a couple of years ago prior to exhibiting my 'Bermuda Road MPD' layout at Poynton, it attracted a lot of attention over the weekend and I could have taken orders many times over. The longer spur off the turntable with the pit will feature a set of sheer legs in due course. The 'coal hole' with ash pit is a particular favourite of mine. All 4 roads through the MPD feature inspection pits and the buildings will be illuminated. The road adjacent to the left wall of the building is for the breakdown crane and the road on the right is for cripple loco's, this I remember from my spotting days at Corkerhill (67A) back in the good old days. Hope you like the S L O W progress guys but I'm getting there.
  8. Hi guys, Many thanks for all your kind thoughts and support. The coroner rang today with a determination of the cause, to narrow it down it was due to Acute exacerbation of her COPD combined with reduced blood flow to the heart. Purely natural causes I'm told. Life is to uncertain, she simply went to bed feeling cold and did not wake up, nice way to go though. Once again thanks for the messages of support, I will get there.
  9. Hi all, Apologies for lengthy absence, sadly my wife passed away suddenly and very unexpectedly and railways have taken a back seat for a while. I just can't seem to get the urge or desire to get motivated but I'm sure it will return. The inquest is provisionally being held this Friday but it may still be postponed as the results have still not yet been advised. I'm slowly getting back to progressing with the 'Chestergate' side of the layout and most of the track is now laid. I'll post some photos at the weekend all being well. As for the DENT totem my friend let me know about this but I'm thankfully not really into railwayana. All I have in that line is both Distant and Home signal arms and they just sit in the den. Cheers Mike
  10. Cheers Mick.......... Your neck might feel better - my heads wrecked now haha.
  11. Hi Mick, As usual my friend you area a saviour! When the files were uploaded they were the correct orientation until they were added to the topic. I just could not find a method of turning them within the post, but as you are well aware technology is not my strong point. Once again I am indebted to you. How is Werrington Junction progressing? My friend John shows some updates on Youtube occasionally.
  12. Hi all, Hope you noticed the change of topic title from 'Dent Station' to 'DENT STATION with CHESTERGATE'. Rather than try to manage two separate topics I've decided to combine the two completely different layouts into one topic just like they are in the den. At the risk of repeating myself, just to confirm the status; Dent Station continues as it is now and following the old fiddleyard uplifting the new CHESTERGATE will be created in its place. This layout is a fictitious location and serves to provide me with a more challenging layout to operate plus the opportunity to view more items of stock on what will be a much busier layout than Dent could ever be. Here are a few shots of the current rebuild. All pointwork is copperclad sleepers with bullhead code 75 rail apart from the single and double slips which are PECO just to save time and sanity! Plain track is SMP 'J' track, same as Dent. Sorry don't know why these images have turned 90 degrees? The rearranged approach lines which will not be treated to any scenery. Temporary wiring to test operation as we go, this will all be tied into a new control panel. And just to finish a couple of new editions to the fleet... The Class 21 was a birthday present from the wife. The A2 was a birthday present to myself!!! Hope you enjoyed the quick insight to recent developments. Changes will be a bit slow due to this bleeding leg problem which is driving me insane! Cheers and thanks for looking in guys.

    Hi Andy,

You may have noticed I have a new project taking shape on DENT, rather than have two topics is it possible to rename 'DENT STATION' to 'DENT STATION with CHESTERGATE'.

Please let me know mate, hope you and yours are doing okay in these difficult times.

    Best wishes,

Hi Mike, all good here thanks chap! If you go to the first post in the topic and click on Edit you should be able to change it whenever you like. BTW, this came over as public message rather than a private one. ;)

@truffy - this one has probably arisen because I'd disabled PMs to the old account.  #theendlessbattle

  14. Hi Mark, Well you are a glutton for punishment! Seriously though, many thanks for taking the time to follow the progress to date, as you can imagine there is not a lot left to do on the modelling front with Dent itself and in the main I have recently been working on detailing of rolling stock etc. Of course there is the new project "CHESTERGATE" which I am just about to upload some images of the slow progress to date. I will probably rename this topic from 'Dent Station' to 'Dent Station with Chestergate'. Hope you enjoy the forthcoming posts, thanks once again.
  15. Hi all, Well its all 'start again'! I deliberated over a few days and was not that happy with the straight lines, I seldom build a layout without a curve so a curve it will be. The island platform I think will be changed to an 'Up' and 'Down' with a centre road and possibly a couple of bays, the whole station will not be featured in such a short and narrow space which should leave a bit of room for the depots and goods yard perhaps, but time will tell. I am also hoping it will not be so complicated looking - I've realised I'm getting too old for clambering under boards fiddling with point motors and wiring I'm sad to say.
