Hi Tony.  It's still available.  You will find it in metal forming section under drilling tables.   It's the 12" table plus the bending attachments listed. You get a load of clamps and bending bars of various diameters.

Now it's joy and delight to be building a very nice kit again. The is the David Andrews GWR 47xx 2-8-0 tender loco (number 4702).

 

Starting, as usual, with the tender, no problems at all with the build. The only tricky bit it the flared corners that have 'fingers' the fill and shape more later.

The chassis parts are simple and a straight forward build.

The chassis was very quickly assembled. I always cut and prepare all the components including any pre drilling before any of the actual construction starts. (Using a felt tip I mark the ID numbers on each part before removing from the etches)

Turning now to the body. The first job is the flare. Fairly easily done with the aid of the 12" MetalSmith bars. The extra long length caused by the two sides and the back as a continuous etch means care in moving along the bars and watching you do not kink the flare.

The vertical corners are done in the same way. Keeping the flare over the edge of the bars.

Checking the top plate is a nice fit and tweaking the bends carefully if not quite spot on.

Basics are now done. The flare fingers were masked of on the outside with masking tape and low melt solder dripped in from the rear. Then using dentist drills roughly cleaned up to shape, followed with half round files. Any small areas not right has more solder dribbled on and reshaped until good.

 

Steps, handrails etc are all added BEFORE any supports are added. Makes life very difficult if not.

The metalsmith tool looks useful for making the flares. Is this still available from metalsmith as i could not see it listed on their website?

I just realised that I should not have said that trichloroethylene is the same as trichloroethane - they are different solvents.  However the ebay item is for trichloroethylene which is used as a degreaser.

I made a Jinty roof like this removable by making the front tab slots in the tank top slightly wider on the inside of the cab, and adding a scrap of etch bottom of the tabs or a length of wire if the tabs are long enough, so it went into the slot slid forwards that held the front in place. The back I added another piece that sat over the coal space and was solder to the rear of the cab top. This was drill clearance for 12BA and holes in the top of the coal space tapped. That then held the rear in place which stopped the front coming out.

I do not think you can get trichloroethylene any more I think it was band because it is a hydrocarbon and bad for the ozone layer. We used to use it in hot vapour cleaners for our clock case parts before stove enameling.. I agree nothing worked quite like it.
