  1. Thanks stevemmm, do the plunger assemblies have wires soldered to them or do they conduct voltage by interference fit? If they do, is it a split chassis?
  2. Can someone on here please explain to me with images if possible on how to go about replacing the spring plunger pickups on this model? They appear behind the driving wheels in the chassis, how do you get to them and are they soldered with a wire attached? t hanks in advance….
  3. Received my BR green version yesterday, good model, but being a ‘DC dinosaur’ I have run it on a DC straight gaugemaster controller, a Trax DC feedback controller, and a Blue Railways DC controller (which uses PWM). I am always hesitant on running any new locomotive on my favoured Trax feedback controller, as many new models do not like a feedback controller. However the running and control of the locomotive has been very good with full control and smooth slow running. Observations that I do have is that the headcode lights are poor, with position 1 and 5 being the brightest, the rest very dull and this only when using the gaugemaster DC controller. The headcode lights do not work when being powered by the Trax (feedback) or Blue Railways (PWM) Controllers, nor do the cab lights wand facility, not a problem to me as the cab light seems far too bright and wouldnt be on whilst driving along. As others have reported there is a design error in the bogies, as the centre wheels have no up and down compensation, any of my code 100 track joins which may be 1mm out of level to each other, causes the loco to derail as the bogie pivots on its centre wheelset. ‘Charlie’ on you tube has shown a similar fault with a accurascale class 37. Having said the above, it fits very well into my BR SR Waterloo - Exeter 1950’s layout, and being a DC only layout the playthings of the DCC brigade dont apply, and the sights lights and sounds of my childhood firmly remain inside my head having seen them first hand.
  4. Thanks to all, yes it must be an early Health and safety notice. I found this image, but again very grainy, but it was before the red stripe was applied and you can see wording on it. thanks again all ....
  5. Its really strange it had no wording on it just the red stripe. I am modelling Exeter Central at the moment and noticed it when constructing the canopy.
  6. Hello, In the image below which is an artist impression from an original photo, the is on the left hand side of the green Exeter sign on the canopy on Platform 3 an oblong plate which is white with a red stripe at the top of it. It was duplicated on the other platform canopy on Plat 1/2 as well. Is there anyone who can tell me what it was for ?? thanks
  7. Isn't the cab side lining for a cut down tender, this one is high sided?
  8. Mine arrived today very pleased with it but a few disappointments, Poor QA with model, lower battery box not attached to loco in box, screws fortunately in there, but will not 'tighten' in correct position, so black tack was required. Both leading driven wheels, pick ups needed fettling, very poor initial running with stalling on point work, now ok after adjustment. Magnetic train numbers a good idea, would be nice to see this sold separately.
  9. Thanks 'Stationmaster' for your input, I think the term Head Signals must therefore be an old Southern Railway outdated term as I cannot find it in any documents that are BR Southern Region. I, like many on here grew up in the 50's, I was very lucky to have some good friends who were locomen at Nine Elms and Feltham mpd's in all my conversations with them about this subject they always referred to the 'changing the headcode' displayed on the front of the engine because in the steam era it identified the route that the loco or train was taking. The 1950s rulebook (see image ) Rule 119 only uses the terms headlamps and disc. Again like so many others on here, we all purchased the Ian Allan publications of the day, images below.... which all use the terminology 'Headcodes'.
  10. So when and who changed 'Headcodes' - the name for over 50 years.... to headsignals...lol.......
  11. I am and have been using for the past 10 years 'TRAX' controllers. They are DC feedback. I have also got gaugemaster feedback controllers which when used on the 02's makes the running even worse. I have always found the gmaster feedbacks a lot 'courser' in operation when compared with the 'TRAX' ones. I have other coreless models that the 'TRAX' controllers control and run well. (One exception is the Kernow Warship model which accelerates in steps rather than smoothly)
  12. No Decorum, not disgusted at all, only ever willing to improve my knowledge, even at my senior years ! LOL, Tell me more, what decoder is required ? Have you done this and seen the results ? How does a DCC chip allow a DC controller to control it ?
  13. Dont buy one of these if you run DC with feedback, they are awful ! It is a splendid model and much needed for my layout, but the two I purchased ran very very badly. I have inproved things a bit by installing a pea bulb which acts like firebox glow, which has smoothed out the lumpiness of there running qualities. Its a shame that it was designed for the DCC world. I am always looking around for a replacement motor that can cope with DC Feedback controllers, however have not found one yet. Shame Bachman have not changed the motor, if they had, I would have purchased a few more.
  14. Hi Mike, I have a large oo layout with all code 100 track, yes my track laying might not be to snooker table flatness, I dont know anyone who has achieved this but all other locos (over 200) run through my pointwork fine. The only area I was having trouble with was the double slips, all of which are at the terminus station throat. The 61XX could not cope with them as both front and back driving wheels sit very nicely over the plastic frogs and the centre axle lost electrical contact because of the rigid wheel set.. It would be nice if Peco could produce code 100 live frog double slips and a live frog scissor crossover as well! And over the years I have had peco 100 pointwork go banana shape on me as well producing a very small hump in the point.. The modification I have made nows allows for better running, but I am always reluctant to start hacking around a brand new £100 + model. cheers James
  15. Kieth the Bachman lord nelson albeit an older model, had front bogie pick ups but sadly not on the tender, so they have tried. Lets hope they listen to us customers and improve, more pick ups and some compensation in the axles. cheers James
  16. I actually said, Its only 6 wheel pick up which is disappointing as all wheel pick up would have been better imo and at £100 + you would expect it. That is In my option, all wheel pick up would be better......and with manufactures pushing towards the £200 per tender locomotive it surely must be expected. The new Dapol GWR Mogul is coming with all wheel pick up, so if they can do it , so can the Red and Blue box suppliers as well.
  17. Have cured this running problem by filing a half round space in the bottom keeper plate below the driving wheel axle so that the axle can have some compensation. This allows the brass axle box to move up and down to adjust to less than billiard table track. My track is near perfectly level but there is always an exception. Heat in the room, wood expanding/contracting etc. Anyway well pleased with the result.
  18. PS thanks to those who responded with suggestions.
  19. Barclay a result! Fitted an amber colour light bulb from an old Ekon signal and now the 02's have firebox glow and run perfectly on my feedback controllers (Trax). Micro surgury to fit it but worth the struggle. Happy bunny now that I do not have to consign the models to ebay!
  20. Did you pay more than this then Keith ?
  21. Just received a new Large Prairie (Black) and found that it will not run through code 100 dead frog double slips without stopping. Have checked b2b's and wheel wipers and all is fine, Its only 6 wheel pick up which is disappointing as all wheel pick up would have been better imo and at £100 + you would expect it. . I am going to try Caddy's suggestion about the body screws, but wondering if anyone else has problems with this loco on double slips?
  22. David, have you actually used these in a DJM 02 tank? ??> cheers James
  23. thanks for the reply AndyID I have never ventured under the bonnet on one the 02's yet. Will try and find the instruction sheet that came with it and have a look. Its such a shame as it is a delightful model in all other respects.
  24. Hi All has anyone replaced the coreless motor in a DJH 02 tank loco with a 'normal' motor, one thats suitable for DC operation with feedback controllers? If so what make and model number please cheers James
  25. Does anyone know where the Nine Elms Breakdown crane was stabled when not in use when the depot was open? Did it have an allocated space inside the shed or was it elsewhere. From my visits to the depot in the 60's I cannot recall seeing it anywhere. Thanks in advance
