  1. Just had to take the worm and cardan shaft out of one end of my class 121 as it decided to completely jam, now reassembled and running well on one bogie, just wondering if anyone has had a total failure after doing the above remedy? Lovely model but what a pain. We shouldn't have to be doing these fixes for the price we pay for models these days.

  2. I lived at Barton Drive, Hedge End and I used to cycle up Woodhouse Lane with one of my mates from the same estate, running the gauntlet of a Jack Russell on the way up there and used to watch the regular Western or Brush 4 on the Merehead Botley stone and the regular Peak class 46 on the Fareham stone along with 1121 or 1122 on the Eastleigh Fareham passenger train which started a lifetime as a railway enthusiast, they were happy innocent days back in the 70s.

Makes me feel old as I acquired the Mainline one when it was first released!

Made me think I bought the blue and large logo mainline 56s when they first came out from the train shop at Warwick and thought they were fab at the time, still got both of them but with the first Hornby 56 chassis under the bodies which made them run better, but haven't been run for a few years, you're right, how time flies and how models have unbelievably improved.

Well spotted as I didn't go any further than the link above and was disappointed.  Will buy a couple of these but don't know when I will use them as layout has still yet to be built.  Things only run up a yard of track.  Has anyone else bought these and what do they think of them?

  5. Heres my finished version off D1026 pre 1967/68 condition along side other Heljan western photos.

    Richard.

Some great Western and hydraulic pictures there.  Just out of interest does anybody know how many Westerns Heljan have produced to date?  I've only got the early BR Blue Western they made myself Druid, I am hoping the prices are going to drop with the Dapol Western out now so I can extend my fleet by a couple but prices seem to be pretty stable at the moment.

  6. Well, ive finally had an update from Hornby about my R2421 Dutch 31 110, which I sent back in December 2012.

And its not the best news unfortunatly!

They sent me a letter saying that because of the problems on their end sourcing the right parts for this models repair, its not possible to repair it! I guess its bodyshells or the right version of chassis casting or something specific to 31 110 that is the reason.

On the plus side however they have given me a voucher/code worth £125 off on the Hornby website, so at least thats something. Given I bought my 31 110 at a heavily discounted price of £65 some years ago it means im actually up on the deal!

I was also lucky in that I caught my model before too much damage happened to the bodyshell (hairline crack in the cab roof, almost invisable with the chassis removed) and therefore didnt return the body with the chassis, so all I need to do is buy a new chassis or chassis donor for the old 31 110 body! Good as I like this model.

I would add, if anyone has this model and is considering returning it for repair, do not return the body as you may not get it back again. Obviously if its split and smashed it doesnt matter but if its saveable id say keep it, and send them just the damaged chassis.

I think, from the letter it is only the R2421 model thats affected by this, unless anyone has had the same letter from a different model?

A great outcome for you and a very generous offer from Hornby, I hope I get mine back by the end of the year although I'm in no rush.

  7. Having read the post on corrosion on 31 chassis not having a layout at present I went and checked my 31s in the loft a few months ago and found 2 out of 4 of the 31270s that I have got had the corrosion 1 with badly split corners at one end, I emailed Hornby and sent the 2 problematic ones of to Hornby and I must say that it is great customer service that they are willing to do the necessary repairs after all the years since they were produced and have had a nice letter from Tanya with a 20% discount from Hornby.  They have been away a few months now and I am in no rush for them back as I haven't got a layout at the moment, I was just wondering what is the longest anyone has had to wait to get theirs back.  This is in no way meant as a moan at Hornby as I think it is great that they are giving repair service to locos bought 4 or 5 years ago, just interested in knowing what sort of waiting times people have had.
