  1. I just made a complete balls of a Ten Commandments brass loco inspection kit bought at the Manchester show today. I have learned a valuable lesson though - life is too short for fiddly brass kits.

I don't think lecturing the guy for a mistake helps to be honest. Every one of us has ballsed something up spectacularly on our learning curve. Have another go at an etch mate but think it over and get an understanding of the instructions. (Although don't trust them 100%!) DJP and 3-link are bob on though about soldering; a skill so useful it's worth the effort to master.

      Ready for Round 2? ;-)

Having had time to reflect on this, to be fair the instruction sheet is useless and needs revising with better drawings preferably done by an adult, and step by step guide. Also I need better tools, I have patience, which I use in my scratchbuilding efforts. I might have another go if these things are put in place.

Well, since you can scratchbuild, you're already forearmed for kit building. In fact, where the instructions are wooly you may find it helps to put your scratch building head on.

Whilst there area few good instruction writers out there there's also a lot of s*** too! PM me if you're struggling with anything and I'll try and help.

  2. My wife bought a Hornby B17 (Manchester United, tender drive) from the charity shop today. She wondered if it was a good purchase for £20. I just watched one sell on ebay. For £20.

That sounds like a bit of a coincidence.
