  1. Splashers fitted OK on mine when set in towards the wheels but I cannot get them to fit for 18" curves without a bit of trimming.

    The shiny metal strip could be one of the strips that goes from the cab to the 8' splashers. One of mine fell off. It fits into a small hole in the front of the cab and sits in an indentation on the splasher. I refitted mine by using a very small amount of PVA on the strip where it fits on the splasher.  Still on at the moment.

  2. I also have had no emails from APC, however when I got home I had a missed delivery card sitting on the door mat... *Headbutts wall*

    Emailed them and hopefully they should deliver tomorrow, just praying that the loco has survived all the journeys!

    If its as well packed as mine it should be OK.  The model is in a clam shell surrounded by foam in a sturdy box.

    This was in a poly bag  and wrapped in about 5 feet by 2.5 feet of a foam material similar to what is used under flooring. Then around that a good cardboard box and finally a poly delivery bag.

  3. Well that was lucky.

    Checked my e-mails before going out. Nothing about delivery.

    Got home and as I was getting out of the car APC pulled up.

    A quick look and I have to say an amazing model.  Further examination , running in etc will to have to wait as I'm going out again.

    (The chains have survived the journey)

  4. A very traditional outlook. Men can swear but women shouldn’t.

    Why wouldn’t women swear, when they are forced to share the planet with men?

    I did mention this used to occur on buses which are public transport and were also used by children under 11. If miners could curb their swearing in a public situation then why should people have to listen to a group of women 'F ing ' and 'C ing'.

    I never said that women should not swear and to the best of my recollection men back then did not think that women should not swear.

    It all came down to time and place.

  5. Have you never heard the jokes a group of women make about men? They'd make your blood curdle, although they are often quite funny.  Or do they merely demean the women who are making them?  And if you want some broadcast sexism, have you ever listened to any of the more extreme people who are given airtime on Womens Hour on Radio 4?  But of course sexism only ever seems to apply to men.

    I do wish people would realise that men and women are (thankfully!) different.

    DT

    Yes we need to remember that not all women are angels.

    Rather a long time ago now (mid 50's onwards) my father was a coal face worker and like most miners tended to use some colourful language at times but most knew when to curb it.

    Down the hill from the pit was an egg packing factory which was mostly women. So they frequently found themselves on a bus at they same time.

    The women were mostly North Staffordshire and the miners who were mostly Geordie or Welsh were disgusted with the language coming the mouths of these women.

  6. In the shop I frequent most these days I've seen people trying to get a discount on items already at a similar price to Hattons/Rails.

    On one occasion I got fed up of one individual keep saying it was cheaper in Hattons even though the prices were the same as or only £1 or £2 more so in the end I told him to go to Hattons.

  7. When I was working in a model shop another common approach was the  'I know what they are worth' and then they get offended with what you offer.

    I got tired of explaining how we worked out the price so basically just started telling them if thats what they wanted then sell it on e-bay

  8. Sadly I work with just that kind of person. According to him the whole reason the world's gone to pot is because there are so many women in charge of things, he had a woman boss once and never will again etc etc. We only have one female member of staff and he's nice as pie to her, if he sees her about on site he'll be the first to tell us lot to stop the swearing and joking as there are ladies present.   :rolleyes:

    Best boss I ever had was a woman

  9. I'm sure Stoke Cockshute roundhouse was once a subject on here. But i suspect its archived now but there may be some links in that. So google for stoke on trent cockshute roundhouse and it may find it.

    (I remember because I used to live near Newcastle under Lyme)

  10. The point of model railway/railroad , playing with toy trains is to have fun , enjoyment and pleasure.

    If emulating real world and using the correct proportions of locos. coaches and wagon does that for you then good.

    But the same applies to the guy (or gal) who owns the complete classes of Princess's and Princess Coronation's and runs them with a couple of 3 coach rakes.

    I sure that at exhibition's you would get some people that like the real world scenario with maybe 2 trains a day and others who like to see the not realistic express belting around.

  11. I'm sure there are plenty of ways to look at this.

    Here's a possible.

    I run 2 trains , 1up 1 down say like London - Edinburgh.

    So we start with 2 sets of coaches and 2 locos. So on arrival into terminus I need 2 more locos for the return trips while the first 2 go on shed for coaling oiling etc.

    Now we have  4 locos  and 2 sets of coaches. Really should have 1 spare at each end so were up to 6 and maybe a couple in works. making 8.

    Oh dear,  that means I now need to stop buying A4's

  12.

    why do you think? for legal compliance, because I will be filing a complaint for failing to inform notice to the ico.

    just because you don't care doesn't mean we all don't bet your also the person that gives all there security information out on facebook.

    GDPR has to be complied with too because the date of the event was after 25th of may.

    so if you know anything about it you would know that they have the following conditions to meet.

    The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) defines a personal data breach as “a breach of security leading to the accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration, unauthorised disclosure of, or access to, personal data”.

    They highlight that “personal data breaches” can include:

    • Access by an unauthorised third party;
    • Deliberate or accidental action (or inaction) by a controller or processor;
    • Sending personal data to an unintended recipient;
    • Lost or stolen computing devices containing personal data;
    • Unauthorised alteration of personal data; and
    • Loss of availability of personal data.

    In the case of a personal data breach, the controller shall without undue delay and, where feasible, not later than 72 hours after having become aware of it.

    if it has our card information details then theses don't apply, however if the details are there they failed the encryption and measures.

    The communication to the data subject referred to in paragraph 1 shall not be required if any of the following conditions are met:

    1. the controller has implemented appropriate technical and organisational protection measures, and those measures were applied to the personal data affected by the personal data breach, in particular those that render the personal data unintelligible to any person who is not authorised to access it, such as encryption;
    2. the controller has taken subsequent measures which ensure that the high risk to the rights and freedoms of data subjects referred to in paragraph 1 is no longer likely to materialise;

    Your quoting what is posted on the ICO website but that does not mean you understand things.

    If you wish to make a complaint you need to make it to the Data Protection Manager/Officer responsible for Locomotion Models. He or she can then investigate to determine if a breach has occurred.  Then if a breach has occured they have 72 hours to report.

    But you don't know if they already have.

    I also notice what your omitting to add in is that failure to notify is up to 10 million euro fine or 2% of global profit.

    Your going to be really popular if that happens.

    If you are so concerned about your rights etc and legal compliance why do you keep accessing this forum.

    Every time you do your Human Rights are infringed by the information your ISP keeps as demanded by the government.

    One of the fundamental aspects of the Human Rights Act was 'A right to privacy in all forms of communication'.

  14. There are many ways to skin a cat, but I was thinking along the lines of ethical behaviour, when I mentioned the word shyster.

    Everyone has raised good points here.

    Are there professional (royal charter) bodies for I.T professionals?

    I'm not aware of any royal charter bodies for I.T. but there could be something similar.

    What people need to remember is that the item I.T can and is used to cover many fields of work.  PC support, network support, software engineering , web development etc.

    I myself have certificates from recognised training companies as well as Microsoft and Oracle

    These cover  Web development, MS Exchange server administration, Windows Server administration, MS SQL server administration and database development. Oracle database administratoin and database development. Java programming for Oracle databases , C programming and I could throw a few more.

    So if a developer claims any similar type certification ask to see it.

  15. On my H0 I don't have a bank to consider banking But I have run 3 GP38 at the head with 30 cars then a GP35 followed by 10 more cars.

    More than 30 and they pull themselves off on the curves.

    It does require careful speed matching and then you just create a consist. In mine the GP35 was added just as a loco not as the rear loco.

    Edit

    All were Tsunami decoders. Never tried it yet with different brands in the locos

  16. HI Dave, If its available for you to see and working then it's should just be a case of making some changes to move it to the live platform.

    Happy to take a look if you want to drop me a PM.

    Gordon

    Nice one.

    Now that we have a bit more data from Dave things could be done.

    I wasn't prepared to offer because things have moved on a lot in 13+ years since I did any web development

  17. Sorry Jol but I have to disagree to some extent.

    If this had been a second or subsequent event of this kind, then I would agree with you, but as a first experience then I cannot.

    NRM are accountable in as far as they have chosen their logistics partner (which for all we know might previously have been used by the Science Museum group without problems.).   They are not (as far as we know) to blame for the actual delivery problems.

    As for talk of due diligence:  How many of you who take a car to the garage for service, check if he has the latest software updates from the manufacturer for the diagnostics, or the correct tools to do all of the jobs?  No, I thought not.

    If you want an expert to do a job, you go to an expert.  You do some research on their historic performance (which might well include references) but if they say they can do the job, you let them get on with it.   AFAIK APC have a very good reputation so why would  you doubt their ability to do the same for you?

    Enough!!!

    I only came back in because a friend who reads but refuses to sign up spotted the GDPR issue and he knew I was in data  protection so asked my opinion. I want to get back to ignoring the photos because I still haven't got mine and have not heard when.

    By the way Andy do you have any idea when we are likely to receive them? I would like to get my hands on it before ordering a Hudson from Rapido and the order deadline for that is running out.

  18. Morning all,

    Two completely different subjects.

    1) I am about to start construction of a new layout. It is to go along the garage wall, which is of brick construction. Rather than attempt to put in several wall brackets, which will be difficult to fit perfectly level with one another, I want to fit long thick beams of wood to the wall ( I just happen to have some 4"x2" lying around). Fitting thinner wood strips, or wall brackets is usually done with rawl plugs and screws but the screws will need to be much longer for this wood, so do I just use rawl plugs and screws, or is some other type of fastner needed?

    2) I have been sent some loco drawings as .pdf files but they are at 90 degrees to the horizontal on the screen, which obviously makes them very difficult to read. With a plain photo image I would use Photoshop to turn it through 90 degrees but I have no idea how to do anything with .pdf files. How do I turn it to view it properly?

    Thanks

    Whats your computer. In preview on a Mac I would just rotate 90 degree's

  19. Excusing the NRM for using a contractor who has failed to provide an acceptable standard of service, which I doubt you tolerate from Hattons or a.n.other, seems rather odd. They were applauded for teaming up with Rapido to produce what many have hailed as the best model of a British locomotive, but then failing to understand the logistics of delivering the quantity pre-ordered in a very short time scale seems like a problem at management level.

    I'd suggest that taking due diligence to ensure that the data files with customer details would integrate with APC's was a responsible action, which they have failed to take. Or did they and APC were misleading with the answer? That items were incorrectly addressed and incorrect quantities supplied does look like APC's fault, but as the customers contract is with the NRM, the management team at Locomotion should have taken care to ensure Mr Cockup wasn't invited to the party. Equally, are they seeking compensation for the damage done to the NRM/Locomotion's reputation?

    While supporting the NRM through commissioning and retailing RTR models is understandable, they should at least provide a service on a par with what their competitors do. Remember that they have the advantage of free access to many of the UK's most railway historic stock as well as research documents and can also rely upon a large volume of visitors to their retail outlets. Trying to run a high profile business without sufficient staff - full or part time - to handle the peaks and troughs doesn't seem like a good idea.

    Your post has some merit but my understanding is that Locomotion Models its basically a one man band. If there is any blame it is with the parent organisation (Science Museum group) for not providing adequate training and support etc.

  20. I'm somewhat jaundiced, having just spent 3 months advising on the wretched thing and drafting endless GDPR-compliant documents.

    Sadly, these days you cannot earn a living wage as a wet paint monitor, as this would have been less dull.

    My commiserations.

    From what I have read of it I would say its a European Commission big stick designed to increase the possibility of fines and especially aimed at non EU organisations.
