  2. On behalf of the Neepsend Model Railway Society, thank you to all those who visited the show this weekend - we hope you all enjoyed the exhibition. Also a big thank you to all the exhibitors and traders that made the show such a high quality offering - the feedback we received regarding the standard was overwhelmingly positive.

Congratulations also to Chris & Adam Towers for winning the 'Best in Show' award with 'Queens Road Depot' (see pictures attached).

  3. Final countdown to the NMRS's 4th exhibition, and 2nd show at the Grenoside Community Centre, taking place this coming weekend.

For those driving to the show, there is a car park with approx. 60 spaces - if this is full, on-street parking is available on Main Street by St Mark's Church or further down towards the crossroads with Saltbox Lane.

If you are making your way to the show by public transport, on Saturday the Stagecoach bus 86 runs approx. half-hourly from Sheffield City Centre (Angel Street) and Chapeltown (connecting with Northern services to/from Sheffield & Barnsley), and passes the venue on Grenoside Main Street. On Sunday however, the 86 runs hourly along the main A61 road, and as such you will need to alight at the first stop after the cross-roads with Saltbox Lane/Wheel Lane (if travelling from Sheffield City Centre), or the first stop after the Red Lion pub. After alighting from the bus, continue for another 50 yards then turn left onto Blacksmith Lane, with access into Grenoside Park directly across the road - the venue is a 10 minute walk away through the park.

    Hopefully see you there!

Congratulations also to Dai (88D) for winning the 'Best in Show' award with 'Culm'.

All being well, the next show held by NMRS will be on the weekend of 20th/21st May 2023.

  8. We are very sorry to announce that our 2020 exhibition will not be going ahead due to the Covid-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

Whilst the situation is ever-changing, we at the Neepsend Model Railway Society did not feel that the situation will have improved sufficiently by the middle of May to merit the opening of an exhibition, especially when a sizeable number of our visitors, exhibitors and club members are in the 'at-risk' category relating to the outbreak.

Health and safety, and enjoyment of the show, are our primary concerns, and we are hoping to be able to bring you a high quality exhibition in 2021. In the meantime, we wish everyone safety and good health for the remainder of 2020, and we hope to see you next year.

  9. Neepsend Model Railway Society's 3rd exhibition will follow the same theme as our previous shows, with a selection of superb model railways built by some of the best modellers from the North of England. In addition, there will be support from well-known model rail traders and demonstrators, plus a café serving a variety of light refreshments.

The 2020 show will be held slightly later in the year than previously - it will be on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th May, and will also be in a New Venue, the Grenoside Community Centre, Main Street, Sheffield, S35 8PR.

The venue is situated to the north of Sheffield, near the A61 main road, and has a 70+ space car park, along with plenty of on-street parking in the local area. For those using public transport, local bus services on route 135 from Sheffield City Centre (services to Rotherham) and Chapeltown (services to Sheffield) pass the venue hourly.

As per our previous shows, the exhibition will be open 10-5 on the Saturday, and 10-4.30 on the Sunday. Entry fees will again be £5 for adults, £2 for children, and a family ticket (2 adults + 2 children) is available for £12. As at our previous shows, each adult ticket allows the holder to a free cup of tea/coffee, redeemable at the in-house café.

We are also pleased to announce that a FREE VINTAGE BUS SERVICE will be in operation on both days - the first trip of the day will depart from Sheffield Midland railway station at 09:30; all other departures will run from Malin Bridge tram terminus, connecting with blue line Supertram services - departures from the tram terminus will be at 11:00, 12:00 and 14:35. Services back to Malin Bridge from the exhibition will run at 10:35, 11:35, 14:15 and 15:15. Please be aware that due to the age of the bus being used, prams and wheelchairs cannot be carried - the vehicle to be used is a 1954 AEC Regent III.

  10. Just a reminder folks that today is the 2nd day of opening for Neepsend Model Railway Society's 2nd exhibition - nearly 50% bigger than last year, but with the same entry fee (£5 including a free cup of tea/coffee), and with a high-quality selection of layouts, trade support and modelling demonstrations. There is also the cafe serving a selection of hot/cold drinks, sandwiches, cakes and snacks.

Today we are open 10-4.30. To clarify for those travelling by bus, you need to get off at the Talbot Road stop, next to Duke Medical Centre and the Trades & Labour Club - the venue is then 25 yards up the hill, and the entrance at the top of Samson Street.

    image1_(2).jpeg

  11. Just a small reminder that the Neepsend Model Railway Society's 2nd annual show will be taking place this weekend. We have 17 layouts in attendance this year, and a mixture of trade and demonstrator support - see above for details.

For those intending to travel to the show by rail, it looks like the only services not to be running over the weekend will be Dearne Valley (Bolton-on-Dearne - Moorthorpe) and Huddersfield services on Sunday, which are both due to engineering works.

The venue is within walking distance (approximately 15 minutes), but does involve a steep set of steps up the back of the railway station! There are plenty of bus services that leave from the station front that pass the venue (the 120 is every 5-10 minutes throughout the day) if you don't fancy the climb.

  12. Neepsend Model Railway Society are pleased to announce that we are holding a follow-up to 2018's successful debut show!
Neepsend Model Railway Society's 2nd exhibition will follow a similar theme to our 2018 show, with a selection of superb model railways built by some of the best modellers from the North of England. In addition, there will be support from well-known model rail traders and demonstrators, plus a café serving a variety of light refreshments. Compared with last year's show, there will be a significant increase in the number of exhibits, but entry fees will remain the same as 2018.

The exhibition will be held over the weekend of 27th/28th April, again at the Park Centre, Samson Street, Sheffield, S2 5QT. As per our last show, the exhibition will be open 10-5 on the Saturday, and 10-4.30 on the Sunday. Entry fees will again be £5 for adults, £2 for children, and a family ticket (2 adults + 2 children) is available for £12. Each adult ticket comes with a free cup of tea/coffee, redeemable at the in-house café. A free showguide, kindly sponsored by DC Kits, will be issued upon entry to the show.

The venue is within walking distance from Sheffield Railway Station (albeit up a long flight of stairs!) - both the station and the venue are on the 120 bus route, which has the most frequent service in Sheffield (up to every 5 minutes). Hyde Park tram stop is also a 15 minute walk away from the venue, and is served by trams from Meadowhall Interchange and the new 'Tram-Train’ from Rotherham Parkgate. On-street parking is available in the local area for those visitors with their own transport - a map can be downloaded from our website (https://neepsendmrs.weebly.com/2019-exhibition.html) .

Layouts confirmed to be attending will be:

Mortomley - ‘OO’ 1960s East Anglia
    Arcadia Pennsylvania Terminal - ‘O’ 1970s American
Bridge Street - ‘OO’ 2000s West Yorkshire
Alford Yard - ‘OO’ 1980s West Yorkshire
Glenisla Road - ‘OO’ 1980s Scotland
Wepre Park - ‘EM’ 1960s East Yorkshire

  13. Good show - nice to have a ‘different’ venue (as opposed to the generic sports hall), with a decent selection of layouts/trade support. Hard to single any layout in particular for praise - all were of a high standard.

Only criticism was that some of the aisles away from the main hall were rather narrow (particularly in the room containing the ‘Thomas’ layout) - could barely move due to the gridlocking! As mentioned above though, demand can sometimes surpass expectations and planning isn’t an exact science.

All in, an enjoyable day out though :good:

  14. So, the first show of the Neepsend Model Railway Society is now over - a huge thanks to the exhibitors, traders and demonstrators for their support over the weekend (and patience today during the power cut!), the club members (and family members/friends!) for their hard work in keeping the show running, and finally the general public for their attendance and generous feedback - without you all the show wouldn't have happened. Congratulations also to David & Sue George (70000 Britannia) on winning 'best layout in show'!

Today was not without its issues - as referred to above, a 1 and a half hour power cut caused by a failing phase bank in the national grid substation stopped services on all bar 3 layouts, but everyone took the inconvenience with good grace - apologies to those who were disappointed at missing out on a functioning model railway show!

After a debrief and further discussions, the society may then look forward to the possibility of holding another show next year - details will be confirmed nearer the time if the 2nd show gets the 'green light'. Early signs look promising though...

  15. Day 1 of the NMRS's debut show has gone very well - as Dave says, if you haven't been able to visit the show today, make sure you visit tomorrow. What the show lacks in quantity, we have made up in quality. Thanks to all the exhibitors who have given up their weekends to make the show happen, and those who have helped keep the show running.

The show is open from 10am to 4.30pm tomorrow, and the cafe will again be serving teas & coffees (one free with each entry fee), pie & peas, sandwiches, crisps, cakes and soft drinks.

Just to clarify, the free shuttle bus will be departing from the closest bus stop to Midland station (from the main entrance, follow the large waterfall to the top of the ramp, and walk past the pelican crossing to the bus stop - no need to cross the road).

Attached are a couple of pictures of the main hall of the exhibition from this morning. (EDIT - Don't know why the second image is inverted, the original file isn't!)

  16. Looking forward to seeing the layout 'in the flesh' tomorrow morning Shaun!

Just a reminder folks that the show is open 10-5 on Saturday and 10-4.30 Sunday. There will be 12 layouts, 5 traders and 3 demonstrators in attendance, The entry fee of £5 gets you a free cup of tea/coffee, redeemable at the in-house cafe, which will also be serving a selection of cold sandwiches, bacon sarnies, pie/peas, crisps and soft drinks.

For those wanting to use the free shuttle bus from Midland station to the show, it will pick up from the bus stop immediately outside the station on the main road (no need use the pelican crossing). For those with very limited mobility, First and Stagecoach run the 120 route to Crystal Peaks/Halfway which also passes the venue using fully disabled access vehicles on an ultra-high frequency (up to approx. every 5 minutes throughout the day) - also picking up outside the station.
