I see from Justin's website that the J15 chassis (and the tender for same) is designed for the Alan Gibson kit, but I wonder whether it could be adapted to fit the Hornby loco?

The Rumney chassis was never intended to fit the Hornby J15. We thought about it, but as the ‘sponsor’ of the project it would have been too much compromise for my purpose. The main issue with replacing the Hornby chassis was the lower half of the body integral to the chassis. In doing our market research (identifying the NuCast kit as another beneficiary as well as scratchbuilders as the Gibson kit was out of production, though does appear occasionally, either from Gibson’s rage or by auction) I felt the Hornby model was best left to Brassmasters to support, which they have.

The Rumney Models chassis for the J15 and F4/5/6 are both etched fold up chassis produced by Justin for me - and put on the open market. Same for the Cl. 31 sprung chassis I commissioned.

Whilst I was messing with the phone I thought I would take these as well as they were mentioned.

Recent eBay buys. Occasionally there are still bargains.

ISTR it was about £70 for the LRM Jinty. £20 for the Craftsman MR Jinty. I was surprised it's whitemetal as other Craftsman kits are brass.

And getting back on the subject of D&S. I think this was £35. I thought it would go with my J70 and J15.

All at the bottom of the pile though as I want to finish other things before starting anything else!

Just FYI I commissioned Fox to produce GER decals for this, if you are planning on that period. They are in the Fox range.

MJT etched parts are very good. Available from Dart Castings. They also do a variety of cast axleboxes and springs to go with them.

I suggest you take a look at Rumney Models' website Morton-Independent-Lifting Link Brake Underframes | Rumney Models. You will, of course, need axle boxes and so on, which he also supplies. Your van bodywork has been finished very well, so a decent chassis should go under it. The kits are not as hard to build as you might think form the pictures. I managed it...!

Same in Engineering. All split up to suit the prevailing political dogma of the time. 30 years on it gives me no pleasure to point out to the younger generation that they are witnessing another example of the white heat of innovation in the sunny hills of the promised land.

    For 'white heat' read 'arson'.

BR was far from perfect, but having been realigned into business units under Organising for Quality' it didn't need to be destroyed by privatising in the way it was.

I've witnessed some fine examples of not integrating or innovating because 'we aren't paid to do that'. What is really meant is: 'You are employed to create the best return for our shareholders, not the best outcome for the railway'.

    Don't get me started.

    Oh, you did 🤣

Paraphrasing a recent remark by a Healthcare Corporation (of course) to the effect that they are in business to make money, not cure people…

Agreed, very neat. I really struggle with piercing saws. Go through a crazy amount of blades.

These were suggested by someone else on here - designed for plastic but work very well with flat brass or nickel silver - https://www.olfauk.com/product_qr/OLF_PCS

Try candle wax on the blades; just run the blade through and old candle offcut. It will make passage through the metal easier and reduce the binding that causes most breakages. Washing up liquid at a pinch if your household is all electric!

Hello Steve, the hinge etch arrived, thanks again for the recommendation. I may not be using them on this project but I'll defintiely be using them in future - here's a clearer photo than the one on Dart's site, in case anyone wants a detailed view:

I’ll vouch for these little marvels; so far I’ve used them on the fabled quad art (there you go, Richard, one less excuse…) a twin art, a half dozen NPCs and about a dozen coaches. Just be careful keeping them in line and you’ll have some really nice looking hinges. Steady with the solder, though, or you’ll get blobs. Clean work, flux and heat, as ever, are your friends.

    Results – GWR 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Poll No.5: Minks

    Hello everyone

Many thanks to the 21 voters who took part. The number of votes to each item is shown in the left hand column and Comments Received are appended on a PDF as usual.

Please note that the results reflect the views of those who voted here and may not necessarily reflect those of the wider modelling community.

Although the two lengths of Mink A were the highest-polling, voters went for the Mink F as the focused choice.

    High Polling

    17        Mink A. 16ft

    17        Mink A. 17ft 6in

    Middle Polling

    14        Mink C. 21ft. Ventilated

    13        Mink B. 21ft. Non-ventilated

    12        Mink F. 36ft. Bogie

    Low Polling

    11        Mink D. 28ft 6in

    10        Mink. ‘Iron Mink’ 16ft.

    10        Mink G. 30ft

If there was only enough plastic available to make just one of the above, which should it be?

    8          Mink F. 36ft. Bogie

    5          Mink A. 17ft 6in

    3          Mink A. 16ft

    2          ‘Iron Mink’

    2          Mink G. 30ft

    1          Mink D. 28ft 6in

    0          Mink B and Mink C

We return to our normal Wednesday/Saturday/Sunday schedule from Wednesday 21 July when we will be running GWR 00 Rolling Stock Mini-Poll No.6: Freight Vehicles (exc. Vehicle Carriers & ‘Heavy Duty’). The Vehicle Carriers & ‘Heavy Duty’ types will follow the week after.

    The carriage is this one.

There are a number of kits for Gresley bogies (MJT are my favourite) but the Bachmann 'Thompson' ones (36-006B) are also pretty good.   They are a Gresley bogie

Now to the subject of footboards, or more specifically, those footboards supplied by MJT. As I look at them, they appear not to be ‘handed’ (see attached), so my question whether they were not ‘handed’ so bogies could run either way round (given the pipework and wiring on the real  thing this seems unlikely), or they were so and the MJT etch has overlooked this. I ask as I am about to undertake ‘footboarding’ a Hertford Quad and, as a rather camera shy set, have few photos as reference. Poring over the pages of Harris has not helped much either.

The collective wisdom hereabouts would be welcome…

    Best,

    Marcus

  11. A lovely, evocative build that really ‘fits’ in my memories of Liverpool Street to Ware from ‘66 to ‘75 - my father did the commuting, I just went along to be an annoying kid home for the holidays! I recall them from green to blue/grey.

Now all we need to do is persuade Charlie up at DC kits to reintroduce them - 305/1, 305/2 and the 304/308. It seems Southern Pride no longer markets theirs either, leaving just Worsley Works’ etched offering. Alas.

  12. Is this the one now manifested as part of the Worsley Works range. Has anyone actually built one of this class? I recall Stephen Johnson has one in the works from his own castings/print masters, but has anyone built the Worsley one - or any other that is 'finished'?

I ask as I am tinkering with the Worsley 'kit', looking at getting the curvature of the front right and an approach to the radiused corners of the cab. The Worlsey etch comes 'in the flat' and does not look to lend itself to bending. I am also looking into the roof profiles and their construction. The rest is likely to be a Class 108 chassis set, MJT BR fittings, a Masokits gangway set and so on. That's as far as I have progressed. Please do not hold your breath but I will write it up...I promise.

I even flew 3500 miles to photograph the preserved one but it was at the other end of the line and Llangollen was a zoo, dammit. Ah, well, on with the vacation...

    Best,

    Marcus
