  1. Are they similar to French waffles or Gaufre? We have a waffle maker but I think it only makes Belgian waffles…
  2. I hope I would have got used to it, but we only had it for a few days. Trying to use it in a left hand drive car while pressing the buttons on a hotel security gate system on slope wasn’t the best learning environment.
  3. When we first moved into this house Aditi asked me to make some pine bookshelves for her study to match some antique pine stained furniture from our previous house. I made a reasonably good job and it was time to stain them. For some reason, was persuaded to use a non solvent based product. It was very orange. I hoped it would age quickly to what the can and leaflet suggested. It has taken about 30 years and it is quite nice now. However I think the pine might have aged just as well by leaving it. Bookcases on view in other parts have been purchased ready finished since then. Our sheds are Summer Tan, the compost bin is Purple Pansy
  4. This is what it used to look like. I wonder if the person in hi vis was about to paint it.
  5. This must be awful for cars with line followers. It is a road we go along frequently and it just looks wrong whichever way you are driving.
  6. You do soon get used to it. Modern double clutch “automatics “ usually seem to have an anti rollback device to emulate “proper”automatics. I don’t think I have ever applied the handbrake myself in my car. It applies itself when the car is in park mode. It releases as you exit park and apply the accelerator. I did have a hire car once which had a manual gearbox but with an electronic handbrake. I don’t like doing hill starts in that but we only had it a few days.
  7. Does it beep faster the closer you get? Mine then makes a continuous tone at 30 cm .
  8. I had never heard of that until a couple of days ago. My nieces school are having a Galentines Disco. It is a girls school. I think she was going
  9. Morning all. It is overcast with intermittent drizzle here. I have to have my stitches from my back removed today. This will be at the GP surgery rather than the clinic on Canvey Island that put them in. I have a couple of WiFi plugs to play with that arrived earlier this morning. Tony
  10. I am sure Mrs H would have been far closer than I could be. The clip on tuners are wonderful devices for me.
  11. Being somewhat tone deaf doesn’t help my musical attempts. I have identified a bit of a hand problem I am trying to overcome. However years ago when I first tried to play an guitar it was the tuning that defeated me. The note on a pitch pipe or tuning fork sounds nothing like a plucked string to me so although I could tune one string from another the original wasn’t necessarily correct. I then got a clip on tuner which makes it easy. I also have an app on my iPad ( there are loads of other ones) called Fender Tune. It also has a ukulele setting. Allegedly playing a stringed instrument even with dodgy digits is good for those fingers. We shall see.
  12. Rule Britannia was written at a time therefore that it was ok for Britons to be free of tyrants but slavery within the British Empire wasn’t banned until 1838. Great Britain became a world power by exploiting its empire. Perhaps it is time for a song about Britain today to play at sporting events , saving the National Anthem for State Occasions. Perhaps a competition on the television like the Eurovision Song Contest but for England only.
  13. I have done a bit of tidying up in the workshop bit of the garage rather than the end I originally intended. I want to have some remote controlled lights in the space between my drive and a neighbour’s garden wall. I have to get close to it when parking. The old streetlight used to cast enough light for me to see but the new one doesn’t. The space between the drive and the wall is filled with shale so my plan is to bury some low voltage led outdoor lights in the shale with the transformer in the garage controlled by a “smart” plug. So far I have just ordered the plug, if my idea doesn’t work I can use it elsewhere. Other Wi-Fi things work in the garage, like the solar invertor and computers used for train stuff so it should be ok. Anyway I will experiment, I know @polybear did various tests with such switches in his conservatory and shed. I also did some other repair tasks. Aditi got her sewing machine out and it was leaking oil (no it isn’t British, I think that only applies to old motorbikes) . I usually get asked to oil the sewing machine but last time Aditi did, it as she thought she had owned it for about 50 years and should do it herself. It looked as if she had applied one squirt instead of one drop in each lubrication place. I then had to release a couple of items she had overtightened. Then she asked for a hammer. I asked what sort and she said a hammer as in for hitting things. I ascertained she wanted to replace a riveted type button on jeans. I offered to do it. All done. Tony
  14. Also their equal opportunities slogan would have probably mentioned how it was equally offensive to both Hindu and Moslem employees.
  15. The Wikipedia article mentions a number of things that did go wrong during executions . The East India Company would appear to have chosen it, as being more humane than being flogged to death.
  16. When I first saw that photo I wondered if he had previously not paid his tailor.
  17. If you have an iPad there is always GarageBand.
  18. Morning all. It is sunny here. I may go out and tidy the garage, or at least the end near the door. Stuff has been dumped there all winter and just needs putting away properly. I used to buy clothes from M&S but rarely now. Tony
  19. Was it an assessment for ballet school?
  20. On whatever version of Word Aditi used a few years ago she turned everything off. So she managed to produce a 55000 word project with no spelling errors and one minor formatting error in a reference. She is a very good proofreader. One of the external examiners said they like to find a few errors for corrections to prove they had read it! They did ask her to change the title. She had no objections to that at all.
  21. I was wondering if it was something to do with the Edge browser now with added AI. I often hit the comma “key” on this iPad instead of the space bar. Perhaps, I could suggest it as a new thing, the Essex comma.
  22. The autocorrect on this device seems to have gone mad over the last few days. I dislike it trying to correct URLs, allowing gibberish to remain or to correct correctly spelt words. When Aditi was writing her doctoral thesis, at first I would hear her tell the PC off when Word suggested her sentences were too long or that hermeneutic was not a word. Instead of creating a special dictionary she just turned off style adviser and spellcheck.
  23. And very glad you are. Tony
  24. I often say when Aditi mentions something is a little past its use by date I remind her that once upon a time sailors had meat rations had circumnavigated the planet a few times.
