Just run my original batch 04 around the layout, and I must say that comparing the performance against other 0-6-0s, it is probably the winner. The competition was a Farish 08, Farish Pannier tank and a Sonic 56xx (I know its a 0-6-2, but..). The test train was 60 Farish 27T tipplers and the layout is 5.6x1.8 metres which although all could handle, reliable slow speed performance was best on the 04, which would easily do a scale 19mph without faltering. Both 08 and Pannier need a bit of a warm-up, but the 04 could go around at 3 volts (I'm still analogue) and less, (but I didn't time it), in 2.5 minutes.
I'm thinking if it can do that on DC, what can it do on DCC?
Thanks for taking the time to test and report back - really useful! Just been having a look at your layout thread, too: great stuff.

I would imagine they are the same chassis, so both will have the same performance.
The true comparison would be a Farish 08 vs a Farish 03/04.
Personally I prefer the 04 running qualities over the 08, mine has a waddle and doesn't seem as smooth as the 04.
Note I am referring to the last incarnations of the 08 and 03/04 - not the very latest DCC ready chassis which have different motors.
Thanks - that’s very useful; I hadn’t realised there was a newer version of the chassis (and should have guessed the older ones were the same chassis!).

I'm considering dabbling in N, and want to start with a (very) little shunting layout, probably DCC. I wondered if there are any strong views on which is the better performer out of Farish's Class 03 and 04, particularly regarding slow speed running?
TIA for any pointers or views.

No Place (sometimes AKA Co-operative Villas) was still there last time I went past: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Place
PS. really enjoyed the pics and words on Hawthorn Dene.

Superb model railway AND music studio combined: this is the ideal combination to which I aspire!

That looks fantastic - great lighting, in particular.

Spiritualized - outtakes to Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space. Fantastic stuff.

Nice one. That looks excellent. I can imagine that being very tempting for a lot of people: certainly handy for anyone building a micro layout.

Just stumbled on this thread - great stuff! Where are the buffer stops sourced from? They look good.
