  1. These pesky things have just flown over again, en route from Bournemouth to RAF Valley after their D-Day flypasts of the past few days. At least their colour matches one of our cars...

As for reviews look at proper ones by people who actually know a little about what they are talking about. I quite like ones like this as the emphasis is on the running. I can make my own mind up about the other details just by looking at photos.

An interesting review, but did they have to get a replacement model due to problems with their first example? Have a listen between 3:05 and 3:35. This was all rather glossed over...

Someone mentioned reviews becoming more "hostile". Maybe so, but with folk's rising expectations, plus the rising cost of the models and the need to have an "edge" or an "angle" in so much stuff on YouTube, this is to be expected.

Though as long as reviews are honest; that's what I look out for.

  3. I think we can all agree (pauses for opposite views...) that working lamps are a gimmick on a steam engine. Hornby (and earlier Tri-ang) have "form" for gimmicks since the 60s. In their eyes it adds value; so very good from their viewpoint. In modeller's eyes somewhat different. I'm not talking about collectors here, as they'll buy whatever.

Nothing wrong with a gimmick if:

    1.  It's effective

    2. There's an option not to have it

    The model looks superb.

The finish is very well executed.

Seems to run smoothly (caveat with some examples having iffy tender connections).

Pulling power - the jury is still out, but good enough for most of us.

All Hornby needs to do to make this the "ultimate Black Five" is to:
    1. Improve the design of loco/tender connection into something more robust, with the ability to have a much closer coupling between the two

    2. Provide a "non-lights" option

    3. Oh, and do something about their quality control...

  4. With my sensible hat on, here are the allocations for 44755-44757, which the Hornby model represents. I've looked at three sources, all of which slightly vary. But this is the consensus, +/- a month:

    44755  5.48 Derby

                 6.48 Holbeck

                 9.61 Stockport Edgeley

                11.63 Withdrawn

    44756  6.48 Holbeck

                11.63 Lower Darwen
                   "     Southport

                 9.64 Withdrawn

    44757 12.48 Holbeck

                 11.63 Lower Darwen

                   "      Southport

                 11.65 Withdrawn

Just looked through my old Ian Allan Combines, and I never saw any of 'em.

  5. I've reached out to Wikipedia and found this:

"The formation of Europe as a coherent landmass dates to after the breakup of Pangaea, taking place during the Oligocene and completed by the early Neogene period, some 20 million years ago."

So we're still part of Europe...

Love this thread drift; bit like continental drift but on a smaller scale.

  6. With the earlier BR emblem on the tender, for that period the lamps would probably be black anyway.

Must say though that appearance-wise, Hornby has done an excellent job in capturing the "look" of a Caprotti.

  7. First day of summer; well the meteorological start of that season.

So we head for the garden centre a mile or so down the road. One of our neighbours was just coming out as we went in; so obviously she had the sam'e idea as us.

Came away with six plants and four bags of various grades of potting/sowing compost.

Also saw a former colleague buying plants too. Hadn't seen her for a couple of years. She used to be our school's music teacher, but failed miserably at trying to teach me to play the recorder...

  8. Shall we all be kind to each other in our responses? It's only a model loco after all, albeit +£200.

This thread is becoming polarised; get enough of that stuff on the news, what with elections here and all that's happening in the US...

  9. Be interesting to compare the Roco model price : monthly wage in Germany and France, with Hornby model price : monthly wage in UK.

Net (purchasing power parity) in Euros per month is:

    UK 3127

    France 3556

    Germany 4667

So, assuming the Roco/Hornby models are the same price in France and Germany, we get the % the model costs in each country of the monthly wage:

    Roco model       UK = 14.4%  Fr = 12.7%  Ger = 9.6%
    Hornby model   UK =  8.6%   Fr = 7.6%    Ger = 5.8%

Running plate looks straight, dome correctly positioned, and it's got a smokebox door handle. Looks like you've got a good'un. Fingers crossed for everyone elses.
