  1. There was a time that it was possible to see redundant box van bodies used as sheds, although they are getting thinner on the ground. However, I don't recall ever seeing brake van bodies used in the same way - was there a reason for this (apart from the fact that there were vastly fewer of them)?

  2. If one looks at Google streetview, just to the southwest of Lanydrock Road bridge at Plymouth (just south west of Laira depot), there is (beyond what looks like a carriage washer) what appears to be a station complete with platform, buildings and lighting standards. I assume that this is something to do with the servicing facilities at Laira, but is it what is looks like? Are there any better pictures of it?

Some recent developments on my layout:

    1. Wire fence installed at the front of the distillery.

    2. Track added, ballasted and weathered on the ‘mainline’ section.

    3. Mainline detail added, signal box, signal, fencing, static grass, point rodding and a telegraph pole.

    4. Some work around the loco shed, an ash pile added, a industrial type water crane for topping up the locos tank.

    5. I’ve also fitted the backscene now which I believe has transformed the layout.

Coming together slowly! Still plenty to do though, including adding extra foliage to the embankment and front part of the layout to enhance and better match the backscene.

What is the source of the fencing and gates please?

Well, it is all happening!!!   The new range of munitions shown in my photos are now available at CWrailways website.   Under Product Names, click on to Bombs and Munitions for a new revised page.   Then under Product No's go to Diesel & Electric Locos page.   Under the photos of gthe Hunslet diesel it states "current version has half open cab door" and "now available with or without air cylinders".   In fact the cab door is fully open and the Hunslet bonnet nameplate is of the straight version.   If you need to have the diagonal version then please ask to see if available.

Please note that CW stands for "Chris Ward" NOT myself as my only interest in these developments is in purchasing!

You need to be careful ordering bombs over the internet!

  5. Folks,

I thought I knew the Woodhead Route quite well but I've just spotted a group of sidings on an old map that I don't remember seeing before, and I wondered what their purpose was. North side of the line to the west of Hazlehead, on a map they are almost directly south of Carlecotes. According to NLS there even seems to have been a turntable there. What were they for and when did they close?

  6. I notice that the Atlas/Rivarossi/Concor N scale SW1500 seems to have body sides that taper at the cab end, but all the prototype pictures (and also from what I can see HO scale models)  I have seen seem to indicate that the sides should not taper. Is this a fault in the manufacturing as I know that earlier SW types did have tapered sides, and that the Atlas model wasn't necessarily too accurate? The pics I have seen of the Micro Trains model have parallel sides.

  7. I'm new to US railways. I'm interested in short lines and have noticed that the vast amount of locos on them seem to have numbers displayed that appear to be a similar format. Is this a legal requirement and is it local to e.g. the state, or is it national?

Great photo of the track work and nice to see examples of inset track without check rails; I hadn't bothered to add any to Sarf London sidings (I like the idea of building my own track, but I'm not convinced I have the ability/time/patience) but have often wondered if I really should've to be a bit more prototypical.

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the build and in particular the buildings. I think the kits you have are a really good base and have you some on mine, although I am already thinking of rebuilding/bashing mine in to something more parochial.

The cover photo of the book hints that the inset track continued over the viaduct - is that the case? Would there have been vehicular access across the viaduct? If that was the case I would think it would very unique.
