  1. Hi all,

I have a peculiar problem with a locksound decoder which I wondered if anyone could help diagnose the problem.

The symptoms are the speaker emits only a 'rustling' sound but far more concerning is the heat of the decoder. It seems like one of the components is faulty as it gets incredibly hot to the touch- way too hot to hold.

Have swapped chips around between locos and it definitely is the chip, have also tried with and without the speaker attached.

    Is the decoder dead?

Same issue with me - it's very, very difficult to get the body to sit fully snug again. Though I do have similar issues with the older Heljan 33s where the body clips aren't quite 'tight' enough to hold the body down.

  3. I'm also waiting for a discount of sorts on 90129, I got caught out with paying full price plus collectors club membership for 90128.

Incidentally Kernow have a package deal for 90129 with 2 Heljan Cargowaggon flats for 269 which is a good discount, but I don't need those wagons!

  4. Hello,

I have a loft layout and I'm finding that most of my wagon rakes (modern wagons from Dapol, Bachmann and Hornby) are unreliable to run.

My Hornby logs (no bogies) used to be freewheeling but now are very firm, the wheels almost feel locked up.

My Bachmann intermodals (original type) have a similar issue, as do my Car Wagons.

Models with bogies such as my oil and steel sets are fine, so I wondered if there was any advice out there on how to maintain the wheels / bogies on wagons if others are having this issue?

  5. New Yeoman and revised ARC look great. No Hanson though, depsite that being in the N gauge range and the matching wagons have been announced for OO. Perhaps a retailer special?

  6. Are the FGW Green MK3s really printed as dodgily as the images on Hattons suggest? Or is this a one off? I was in the market for both a GNER MK4 set and FGW MK3 set but Hornby have fluffed both (the 91 and FGW printing).

I don't have any model shops nearby to review before purchasing and can't be done with the hassle of returning to online stores.

Help appreciated - pantograph on non-DCC model now sprung 'down' rather than 'up'!

Between us my son and I have several Bachmann Class 90s. Mine are DCC fitted (a mix of factory sound fitted and earlier batch models fitted with the earlier dedicated Bachmann decoder). As supplied, the Pantograph is clipped 'down' and springs up when released; the DCC servo control then allows it to be lowered/raised via the relevant Function key.

Non-DCC fitted examples are supplied in a similar condition except of course there is no control of the pantograph unless a suitably programmed decoder is installed; this means that the pantograph is simply raised by unclipping it and lowered by clipping it back into place. However, on my son's non-DCC fitted 32-620 Freightliner version (from the second batch), the spring seems to have spontaneously reversed, so that the pantograph is now behaving as it does when retracted on DCC and it remains in the lower position when unlatched. It can be pulled up but springs back down. The model has never been decoder fitted and never operated on a DCC layout - his layout uses a Gaugemaster Model D.

Doe anyone have any idea how this might have happened? And is there a suggestion of how to reverse this? I don't have any spare decoders for the second release model and given this has happened without being near a decoder I might hope it can be reversed without having to source one.

Thanks as always for any ides/thoughts/suggestions!

    *UPDATE*

My son has established that when full power is applied it can trigger the Servo motor - on a non-DCC model fitted with a blanking plate! It happens in his estimation about 25% of the time.

I have been aware that electronic controllers can in certain cases inadvertently replicate DCC commands when using a decoder fitted loco on 'DC' power. But this is a first for me in managing (albeit sporadically) a DCC command on a non-decoder fitted locomotive!

I have a few 90s, and at least one of them (90004) on my DC loop I noticed the pantograph was trying to raise and lower randomly. My DC controller is the cheap Hornby type. On DCC all is well so i haven't had need to pursue!

Given my other posting I am curious on this matter. I am in contact with Hornby regarding a repair on mine (the standard running issues reported by most).

Did they replace just one bogie or both? Is there more pivot movement in the bogie(s) now? Does it still thumb hard through point work or improved?

    Thanks.

Hello, both were apparently replaced. It certainly did 'thud' less than before but it was still noticeable.

Interesting if Hornby are looking at solutions, too little too late though - can guarantee the stock will be sold out by time the loco issue is fixed.

Has anyone had any luck sending their 91 off to Hornby and receiving it back with better running?

Hornby were relatively quick to respond to my first email to their customer service portal but I've had nothing now for 3 weeks so I'm stuck with a £200 model that I can't use! Not sure whether to just try and sell on eBay and hope that the new owner has better luck.

Just to update on this, I got through to Hornby and sent the 91 off and received it back within a week which was impressive. A new bogie was fitted. I think there has been a slight improvement, but it still only runs without derailing on one of my four loops so it's still useless.

Will email Hornby again but if not will just have to eBay it...

  11. Awaiting my Penny Black from Rails - hopefully will land imminently. I was resisting the EWS version but it looks really great..!

The new Bachmann Chip hasn't arrived yet for these, is the original 90 chip completely incompatible or is it a CV issue?
