Duck is in use as the test engine.  All my other stick is fitted with Lenz gold decoders and stay alive.  Duck is still only fitted with a Lenz silver as I have a custom sound project to go in there eventually.

Duck is nearly finished. In 2018 I recorded my mother reading some of Duck's sayings from the TTTE book. She died last year, and I have finally cleaned up the audio. YouChoos then put a couple onto an Zimo MS440C chip and the quality is really good.

Mum was the reason I got into trains in 1977/78 as she used to take me to the local steam railway (sklr) so dad could catch up on sleep when he was on night shift. It seems like a fitting tribute ... and I always thought Duck was a bit effeminate when I read the TTTE books 😂

  2. Our club have used flat head screws secured at the baseboard edges and adjusted to the height of the rail. The rail is then laid over the top with the webbing trimmed back. It's then soldered to the screw then cut at the joint.

I haven't used them on my O gauge because the peco track is very sturdy and the layout has protector plates for storage and transit.

    Defo recommend pattern makers dowels.

  3. The chapel and balcony were full to standing room only this morning for Bob's funeral. A fitting tribute to a top bloke and a superb craftsman. He'll certainly be missed.

  4. My son did this badge a couple of years back.

The scout troop had been able to buy a bulk order of Airfix Spitfires and me109s at a discounted price. The price per plane was very reasonable, and John made a pretty good job of it.

it would be great to encourage more troops to do a railway kit, but the planes were quite appealing. For the price I think they'd only have been able to get some unsexy 4 wheel open wagons!

  5. Not a layout, the Wagon Yard (Trader) has had to pull out, so we have an extra layout instead.

I saw Brief Encounter at Maidstone last month. It's a really interesting layout concept, although it did take a few minutes for my brain to adjust! Definitely brings something different to the circuit, so hopefully other exhibition invites will be forth coming.

Although, come on Dawn, could you not afford a colour layout license 🤣

I'm hoping the brake rodding and yokes will unclip to give me a little elbow room!

Yes, the brake rodding unclips - it is also quite flexible, so you can almost work around it.  The NEM363 coupling mount also unscrews, which makes life a bit easier.  Be warned, if you take both pockets off at once, the screws also hold the body to the chassis.

I went for the option of gluing an NEM pocket on because I didn't have any other bits in my Kadee box and I was being impatient.  It would be good to know which of the 140 series couplings works best with these.

  9. So, being a Kadee users I was a little disappointed by the lack of NEM 362 pockets.

However, thankfully the coupling mounts unscrew, so I cut them down and glued a spare pocket onto the remains, then replaced it and clipped a #19 kadee in. All good 😁

The next batch are from Didcot on a visit in May 1979.  They had Morris dancers as an extra attraction.

Wow - we often bemoan the aging of the model railway community, but look how young those Morris Dancers are ... I don't think I have ever been out and about in the last 20 years and seen Morris Dancers looking that youthful!!!

As always David, such a great thread, thanks for sharing all the piccies!

  11. Please note that this year we have lost our visitor carpark - the school are re-surfacing the area we normally use.

Parking is available next door at the Dover Road Park and Ride, and there is a frequent bus service into the city.

There will be a limited amount of disabled parking on site, but I must stress this is limited.

I see that one of the first offerings will be in WD black. May I ask the learned people on here what time period would this be suitable for, also what time period the WD green livery would cover? Thanks, but I'm normally a banger blue 08 fan.

    Cheers,

    Paul

Black for those on home service from introduction (1943) until demob (in the 7xxxx number range), green or kahki/brown for those destined for overseas service ... except some of the green ones didn't go straight overseas , so you can justifiably run both colours on a WW2 era layout ... although whether the green ones would have been seen on Big Four metals is another matter.

Post war / demob (1947/48) all the military ones went green ... aside from the LMR blue ones of course (1945 onwards).

Simplified but effectively chosen underframe details. The couplings are prototypical so no NEM pockets. There’s a cutout slot to allow the couplings to negotiate 2ft radius but it will be easy to blank off and add other coupling mounts with minimal effort.

Hmm, I can kinda see where they are coming from with the lack of NEM pockets, but it doesn't take into account those customers that want to run them with other stock. I would have thought that if those couplings had been mounted in pockets, everyone would have been happy. This does seem a little retrograde. On models of this price I'm not sure I'm brave enough to start hacking around too much ...

... shame, as they do look exquisite!

  15. I put mine on the rolling road today to run it in (I know the instructions say there is no need, but it has made a difference to the noise level).

It has left a couple of small piles of what looks like brass filings on the test track. I can’t see where these have come from. Anyone else had this? It doesn’t look like they’ve come from the wheels or motion.
