They did.
I remember seeing ex works 37/5's and 37/7's at Shrewsbury on the Cawoods Coals and South Wales Steel trains around 1986. I remember when I first saw a flush front refurb 37 (might have been 797) - wondered where it had come from and who had done the damage... One of the regular spotters then explained to me the large scale refurbishment programme that was being undertaken. My out of date Platform 5 spotters book needed some editing! The flush fronts were a grower though and I can't wait to get one of the general release Bachmann jobs in due course!

Like the Pics Peter. My mate is in Melbourne this week and I nearly jumped into her backpack so I could drop by and say hello!

Looks good Grimley... B) How many rooms in the house have you taken over for this project now? Are you in arrears with the brownie points yet?
How's the big layout doing these days? Presume Grimley is taking a back seat whilst the depot project gets worked on at a good pace?
Cheers

Wibdenshaw. No question.
The most inspiring layout ever in my opinion.
I hope that I have the skills, finances, capacity and wherewithall to build something as amazing as that layout when I retire.

That's one heck of a loco fleet there Arny. Nice weathering too.

Great pics Dave. Look forward to seeing your Coal 26 when it has come out of the WW works.
I was looking at my Heljan Railfreight 26 the other day, just tidying it up and deciding whether to keep it as 025. I saw a pic of 026 in a colour album (might have been the Andrew Vines pictorial) with a 'yellow stag' sticker on the side and thought it looked great against the grey sides and yellow cabs. We'll see. The red stripe has been painted on mine now but will need weathering to tone it down as I used gloss instead of matt!
My Large Logo 47 number-quandry has gone back to where it all started a year or so ago - 47644 'The Permanent Way Institution'. It was named in Perth on 8 June 1986, which happens to be my birthday! Have you thought about doing that one?
Cheers

Part 5.
10.00 and the some movement in the signal box means another train is due. Moments later one of the last class 40s in service arrives on the 7K11 loaded ballast form Penmaenmawr to Crewe. 40012 now with its departmental number 97407 rolls into the loop and runs round its train. The driver has a 20 minute wait until departure time so might have the chance to grab a quick cup of tea.
Cheers Peter.
That third pic looks superb. It's 80's all over, a Class 40 in the winter of its career, two tone blue Daf rig...and I'm listening to Ultravox as I'm typing this. Anyone for some Toffiffee...or a Cherry coke (edit)? Takes me back.

Looks pretty amazing Grimley, the hard work really is starting to pay off.B)

Hi Kevin
I just checked back over the previous page of this thread and was very pleased to see a picture of one of my old favourite layouts - Exford.
When I saw Exford in the mag, I was only 13 and aspired to own and run a layout just like that. I can see certain bits of inspiration carried over from Exford into Leaford.
It would be great if you could bring that article to an exhibition when you show Leaford at some point. I want to try and get out and see more exhibitions this year. Would be great to have another look at the article and have a good old chin wag with you about it (and Leaford of course!).
Just one other question, sorry if this has already been pointed out, but I'm interested in your gantry yard crane. Who makes it and what have you done to make it look so effective?
Cheers

Nice Spoooooon Peter B)

Good work on the RM article Kevin. I had a flick through in Smiffs at lunchtime and may purchase it over the weekend.

Cracking trio of Cromptons there Peter - not seen them all together before.B)

More pics of that 37 please.B)

C'mon Grimley, what's keeping you? A modeller of your expertise should have it all ready by now together with Trent Junction and Ratcliffe Power Station (and everything in between) all at 1:76 [tongue in cheek emoticon].
And as for those squeeky clean Railfreight beasts - about time they had the Grimley works treatment [no pressure emoticon]
Hope all is well mate! At least Newcastle United will have a good weekend... [ultra sarcastic emoticon]

If only my old man was still alive - he would have loved one of these! He was fanatical about Deltics (and Peaks, and EM1s.....).
Stunning loco - may have to purchase one of these and relegate the OO Gauge Bachmann model that is in t'loft for my little un's trainset, when he's old enough!
Nice work Brian on bringing this one to life.

Sir, this layout is a cracker. You deserve huge credit and respect for your attention to detail and patient finishing touches.
For me, the trackwork is the absolute winner, and everything else falls wonderfully into place on and around it.
-
Thanks mud, nice to hear that from someone who has a great layout. Orchard Rd is looking very good.
Just adding the name plates to 60062 Samuel Johnson and 56032 County of South Glam. Does anyone know if either of these locos carried a Canton plaque? I can't seem to find any pics.
Many thanks
Leon.
Bingo...

I looked previously as I have 062.
Congrats on POTW!

At the time of the photo, coal traffic was running from Westfield in Fife to Yorkshire, and the trains would operate in and out of Westfield (along the single track branch from Thornton Yard) as 36 wagon sets. There would be a morning service and an afternoon service - usually hauled by a single class 56. After loading, the trains would run back along the branch line to Thornton Yard where they would be were split into 3 - 24 wagon sets (the maximum allowed over the Forth Bridge) ie 24 of the wagons from the first run would continue to Millerhill while the remaining 12 awaited 12 off the second train to form the 2nd run over the bridge with the remaining 24 of the second train from Westfield running direct as the 3rd train. At Millerhill the first 24 wagons awaited the second 24 with 12 of these being added and the train sent to Yorkshire. The remaining 12 at Millerhill were then re-marshalled with the 24 of the 3rd train from Thornton to form the 2nd 36 wagon train to Yorkshire.
The photo here shows the first 12 wagons from the 2nd train (originally of 36 wagons) to Westfield heading back to Thornton (loaded of course) to hook up with the 12 left from the morning working as loading was slow at Westfield that day and there would have been a major delay waiting on the full 36 wagons. This way 2 trains had got over the Forth Bridge and one 36 wagon train could travel south from Millerhill.
I hope this all makes sense.
Max
Indeed it does... Certainly looks an easily modellable train (the 12 wagon portion anyway!).
I presume you will mostly utilise Hornby's MGR's? Will some Bachmann HEA's and even some 16 tonners for earlier running periods make an appearance?
-
Who says MGR Coal trains have to be long eh? Pair of Choppers on 12 loaded inc one with canopy. I wonder why that one was so short? Was it typical?
Cheers
-
Looking good! Will be keeping an eye on this one...

Cracking work Grimley, hope all is well with you and yours!
Sound chips and smoke generators will finish it all off with a treat!
