  1. The salt was still damp when I sprayed the grey enamel over and I brushed most of it off before the grey was really hard. I've only actually kept one. I made the fatal mistake of adding up what my stock had cost so decided not to buy anything new for a while and have fun doing up what I had, before selling things on. I've kept one riveted that I rescued and will do a welded for me eventually.
  2. Im pretty happy with the salt effect now and like the jagged edges you get although I still prefer my other way of applying acrylic paint over a hard finish and removing most. It's the rust colour that isnt there. The dark is fine as a base but it needs more fresher "orangey" stuff but I've not cracked that tone yet. Im out of wagons but will stock up when they re-run them. With hindsight should have bought in bulk when you used to get a discount as they go for stupid money on ebay now.
  3. I had a book of how to make things as a kid which suggested you could heat and mould clear plastic by trapping it between male and female formers. It was for aeroplane bubble canopies but the principle is the same.
  4. I assumed they were comparing Hornby, Heljan and Bachmann greens.
  5. A couple of days ago I made a mental note to make sure I put the couplings back on before i finished weathering.... The base paint I use is textured but in scrubbing off the salt and roughing up a bit with some sandpaper, I've done a fairly effective job of smoothing it all off. Maybe I should have used the talc I bought specially for this! Getting better I think but haven't reached standards on here: http://www.emgauge70s.co.uk/project_minerals.html
  6. I've never actually run any of my stock as the layout is still only 25 years into the gestation phase so haven't ever learn the hard way about this! I did some rusting this morning and ended up with unused paint I had blended and was thinking what a waste. From now on I will have 4 or 5 wagons on standby for every session and do the buffers with the leftovers.
  7. You might not be bothered but if you took some stills of your warping technique against a white background along with the finished Turbots, I'm pretty sure the modelling mags would be interested in that as an article as it's a bit different to all the usual weathering variations. Earn a bit of pocket money as well!
  8. I read the other day, never take any notice of criticism from anyone you wouldn't have asked for advice! Always interesting to see other people's techniques, even down to painting. I tend to decant colour to a kipling pie tray these days and thin it slightly. Abolutely no idea why - just a habit ive got into.
  9. Gents, If you will indulge a small hijack, my stock rust colours always end up looking slightly too purple and not orange enough although i'm trying to avoid too bright, as rust tones down quickly. I appreciate it's a balance and probably trial and error with different blends but what basic colours do you use?
  10. Wasnt it shown that the real thing was labelled wrong?
  11. This has indirectly led me to discover Bromford Bridge racecourse which I'd not come across before. Not the most attractive backdrop as racecourses go: reminds me of Redcar. Despite growing up in Southampton, I don't think I've ever actually been to Fawley. For some reason, the New Forest always got the nod over the oil refinery for days out.
  12. Having another crack at the salt method on a bauxite mineral that I was going to have to respray grey anyway. Its amazing how much salt you actually need to use to stop the paint getting through. More encouraged by this than last time.
  13. Have they even shown any CADs yet? I may have missed them. They announced the 56 CADs were signed off this time last year, to give an indication.
  14. Andover area? Military, through roads, no third rail. Edit. Apparently it was Oxford. Still think it was a good guess though!
  15. I would argue its far easier now so much is online. Most things take a few minutes and a bit of imagination on Google, and you often discover a load of things you didnt actually need at the same time! I will concede it can absorb a lot of time though!
  16. Have you ever had a railmatch spray go off in that time?!
  17. Elite status can be withdrawn.... I confess after a lifetime building plastic kits, I only noticed that the real ones arent actually solid relatively recently!
  18. I think 5518 mentioned above was black. I hope so as mine is! St Blazey seems to have had a fair number of the rarer liveries eg BRITISH RAILWAYS wording, several in lined green but early crest, unlined green etc.
  19. Have you come across Buzz Models? looks like they do some containers.
  20. Is a Heljan 73 likely to find its way into the Depot?
  21. I've not come across different sized vacuum pipes on one wagon - I think you've had more bad luck and the shorter one is their GWR version. You are right, on NE wagons they both start on the opposite side to the brake cylinder (so mirrored) and angle towards the centre of the van.
  22. I use matt for people personally and like John, lots of grubby washes. For metal such as vehicles or diesels, I flatten down the paint finish with 2000 grade wet and dry (wet) then buff slightly to give a slight sheen which looks different to any sort of varnish. I'm modelling 7mm which is slightly different admittedly: satin would probably be similar on 00 cars.
  23. Agreed. It's the ones ove had for 35 weeks that are the problem! I generally find I'm doing well if I can use more than half the tinlet these days. Edit: just opened my only jar and that had set as well!
  24. I like the idea of them being rigid as not easy to get loose chains to stay taut.
  25. Yes I've found them I think: according to appendix 4 of British Railways Wagons, the first half million, Swindon made a batch of 200 in 1950 and Dapols number fits with that. I will stick with the Slaters one but I wouldn't mind some of those chains from Dapol.
