  1. Hi Paul,

I'm in the process of building my first layout in something like 40 years, and happened across a post by you on another forum where you mentioned using thinned water based woodstain as your preferred ballast glue (plus a drop of IPA to combat surface tension).

I've just given this a go on my ballasting testbed, as it seemed a novel approach worth exploring as an alternative to the usual PVA/water/washing up liquid palaver.

Initial results look good, but do you have a recommended dilution (50/50, 90/10...) ? I've used 50/50 but after 12 hours the ballast is still a bit soft and I'm wondering if I should decrease the amount of water in the mix to get a good bond.

Appreciate any insights you have on this.

    Cheers

    Simon

I use about 20% water, but can vary depending on thickness of the wood-stain.

  2. Hi, I read your previous postings about Bembridge with great interest and wondered if you had retained any of the research material or drawings of buildings?

The reason for asking is that I am planning to build Bembridge as an exploration/learning exercise in EM gauge and I’m struggling to find details on the buildings.

    regards

    Paul

Very sorry but no, I let most of it go when I sold the layout to Mark Pretious in 2008, he's revamped the layout, and it will be at Warley this year.

The home-made steak pie with gravy made with Palmer's Copper Ale, in my local is deliciously unbeatable.

  4. Can I just add to the earlier comments that there are 2 sides to every story, most of the German troops were not Nazis, just normal young men (and boys) doing what they had been ordered to do the same as our troops. They need to be remembered as well.

Sorry but 'guilty by association', I don't buy the 'I was doing my job' excuse, it was used by a Nazi in his defence at Nuremberg.

  5. Still using a bottle of Eames solder flux - about half the bottle still left, and I haven't tipped it over yet.

  6. Brought Cogirep down from the attic to test and spruce up in readiness for its 9th and 10th exhibitions - quite surprised it's had this much exposure given that it was not meant to be exhibited. Any other 2007 challenge layouts still doing the rounds?

  7. Damn this Jamesons is good!
