  2. I used a modified 'your Model Railway' station building kit, obtained off ebay,  to make a half relief small Belgian Station building, in the style of the one at at Raccour .

    it's still a work in progress, needing final details, nameboards etc.

    The kit always looked almost, but not quite British to my eyes, I think know why now !

     

    You may find the Flickr site of a Chap called Peter Van Gestel useful, especially the section on Station Buildings. 

    You might also find the 'Railway Granary' site useful, There's an awful lot of stuff on there, with a lot of track layout drawings in the 'plans' section

  4. I've been speaking to our Coalman at reasonable length over this for some time now, Being his livelihood, he makes sure he's up to date with the latest regulations.

    His take is that legislation mainly  affects bagged coal supplies, though he'll have to move over to supply purely smokeless varitiew of fuel in 2023, as the supply of what's commonly called house coal will not be allowed post that date, that said, he's due next Friday, I'll be checking things out with him !

    I think the loco in the pic is possibly an X6,

     

    The line started off when opened  with the superannuated 4-4-0's, and 0-6-0's, The book on the line in my possession states that these were of Adams design,  presumably the 0-6-0's would have been of the  'Ilracombe goods' type.

    The E1R's arrived 1927/28, and ruled the roost until 1955/6, when the Ivatt's took over ( 41313, one of the regulars, still survives, last I heard it was on the IOW ). 

    Dieselisation was in early / mid 1964, with the passenger services going over to 122's for the final months of those, and class 22's taking over the freight. Class 25's worked the line from '72 to '80, 31's then took over for the final 2 years or so, though they had been used sporadically on the line from '73.

     

    Just after the 22's went, a Hymek and a Warship apparently reached Meeth (the then limit of the line)  on different days, the WR being at that point  short of 25's and 31's that were meant to take up the 22's duties. 

    ISTR that 33's did see occasional use, they certainly worked at least 1 railtour over the line. There were also occasional Railtours using Plymouth based DMU's.

  7. I managed to fit my Klein Modellbahn 60  ( bought as a project, zinc rot!! ) onto a spare Roco Cl 62 chassis.  

    Biggest faff was changing the bogie side frames over. The bogies centre frames get a bit fragile without the outers, especially around the Coupler pocket.

    Back at Xmas 2019 SWMBO and I were on a coach trip to see Andre Rieu (not my cup of tea at all but dream gig for SWMBO) and the Dutch coach driver asked the assembled OAPs (I was the youngest on the coach at 58) why they were so keen on brexit. The resounding answer was "because we won the war" (ignoring the fact none of the would've been old enough to play any active part in WW2 anyway).

     

    Just to add to the insanity of the situation the concert was in Maastricht lol.

     

    I believe John Cleese was often baffled and flabbergasted at how many Brits failed to understand the thrust of a certain sitcom he wrote, especially a 'certain' episode!!

  9. Sorry for being slightly OT,

     

    Re the Carnet/ATA mentioned above, which would be needed for layouts going abroad.

    From what I can see, these aren't for free,  £360 seems to be the price for these.

     

    As both an Exhibitor and assistant show organiser, I've a feeling that this additional cost will probably all but stop layouts going UK to EU and vice versa, 

     

    I hope I'm proved wrong

    Thinking through this then, reciprocally, if someone in Belgium / Holland / Germany etc. buys something from the UK, the VAT they'll pay will, from 1/1/21 onwards, presumably be paid in their own respective country, not the UK,  to be spent on their own respective citizens.

    So, unless us Brits buy tons more stuff from the EU, than they do from us, I can't see how we'd gaining much  ( AlyP will no doubt correct this if wrong).  

     

    It would be nice to think that further thought be brought to bear on the trade agreement, and that things reverted to nearer the way they where, but that will depend, I suppose, on enough folk being sufficiently unhappy with the way it is now.

    Having cast my eye ( that of a former shipping agent ) over the Govt 'document', I can only conclude the same.

     

    The paragraph which I think is the most relevant to the topic seems to me at least to contradict and befuddle the information which is proffered within it :scratchhead:!!

     

    Boy am I glad that I don't have to get my head around that lot for a living anymore!!

    I'd appreciate it if more folk could just, for a second,  try and get their heads around the seriousness of the present situation and then follow the guidelines, ( and I don't mean just stick a mask on and think that that is all that you need to do). 

     

    I really sorry, but at present, until a proper grip has been got on the present lurgy, I don't see the overcrowding of trains as anything to celebrate.

    The  Crankpin holding the Con rod etc in place is indeed a pin, interference fit,, but with a hex head 

    ( At least it is on my 2 !! ).

     

    Easiest way is to gently prise it out using a small flat bladed screwdriver slid between the wheel and the rods, with the tip of the blade lodged up to the pin,  Work gently  and alternate either side of the pin. 

     

    The outer coupling rod pins ( ie one on the LHS Driving wheel in the pic) , are hex head screws.

    From my own bitter experience,  you can add to that list the 'masked superhero', ie, the types that think 'cos they've a mask on, they can utterly and totally ignore all the other ( more effective ) measures, Social distancing, oh dear no, they're wearing a mask, looking with your eyes rather than your fingers, nah, they're exempt , as they've got a mask on.

     

    Folk like that get the 3 metre and rising trick from me.

  15. As Phil says above, masks are reckoned to be only of limited value and effectiveness.  Our 'sage's are obviously still not totally convinced by them ,

    i can see however, that in some situations they may prove a useful 'add on' to the main measures, such as hygiene, social distancing etc. 

     

    However, where the whole idea of masks falls down, in my opinion, is when you factor in the all too common  numpty like  'do wot I want'  mentality of many of the wearers.  They obviously, ( from bitter experience ) think that donning a mask makes them superhuman or something. They then go round doing just what they like, totally ignoring to foillow the other ( more effective) measures;, like social distancing,; looking only with your eyes, not your fingers in supermarkets etc.etc.

     

    For those reasons, if I see anyone in a mask, I deliberately keep out the way, They get the 3 metre distance and rising treatment from me, for my own sake more than theirs. 

     

    Anyhow, to return to Topic, thanks to my own rather faulty 'ventilation system' ( I 'enjoy' an almost permanent stuffy nose), the thought of having to wear a mask in a hot, stuffy environment;, such as the average exhibition hall, is not an appealing thought, and thus, would render shows as something I'd rather avoid.

    No trade=no show. At least no show of any sice unless people are willing to pay a lot more for admission. Can't see many on here doing that, there's enough moaning about price now!

    Your last para suggests to me that you don't actually have much insight into how the beans stack up at a show, or how they can be made to;  how a lot of traders operate, or why folk want to put shows on in the first place.

     

    Now, can we for the sake of Pete, please start being realistic as to what's likely to happen from now up to the point, and after,. they get a handle on the lurgy, ie,

      

    Model railways Shows are sadly, but understandably, off at the moment, but will  almost certainly return, in some form, at some point in the future, at a time hopefully not too far off, yet to be determined

     

    The debate to why's and wherfore's has by now, IMO, been fully played out, I think all angles have been explored,and much of the debate has been useful and informative. however, until the announcement re the lifting of restrictions on mass gatherings, together with exactly what caveats re social distancing etc would be required; any further ruminations, especially those of the We're all doomed type, would seem to me to be no more than idle & utterly useless chaff.

     

    ThIs thread was set up to inform folk of what's going on, or not as the case may be.

     

    As an Exhibitor, and organiser, could I ask, as someone has already done, that the thread return to it's initial brief.

  17. Frankly, rather than try and force people to wear face masks, a bit of good old fashioned, basic hygiene rule enforcement, ( though lord knows how you'd achieve it), could probably achieve more in actuality.

     

    To whit, In the 2 months running up to lockdown, twice a week I was travelling from Humberside to North Yorks by train, mostly changing at Leeds. always 2 separate trains each way, often 3.

     

    On every carriage I travelled on, most of the clienetele was what we'd class as 'movers and shakers',( except on the 144 on the Selby-York, everyone was a mover & shaker on that !!)  and on every carriage I noted the following.

    One of them would be picking his nose, and not using a hanky ( YUK!! ) then tapping away on his phone, the table, Ipad, whatever.

    Then there was the carriage cougher : loud, frequent and as you'd guess, never covering their mouth. Finally, there was of course, Sneezy ( often 2 of them, sadly) . Hankies?, tissues?, anything at all?, nah, just over anything in front of them.

    Every damned day I noticed this, the best of it was,  I wasn't deliberately trying to see this kind of thing, it was just all there in front of me, and mercifully at a reasonable distance.

     

    Ok, I can see how if that lot had to wear masks, it would probably have some beneficial effect, but I do think that a bit of good old common sense hygiene could be better, and not just with the present nasty; what was that famous rhyme from Hancock's Half hour, something about coughs and sneezes? !!
