  1.

Lelouch was arrested following this film that was forbiden to be

shown and he has refused to give the name of the Ferrari driver.

I bought the DVD when it was released, AFAIK it was Claude driving it; after finishing a film in Paris he was offered the use of one of the first gyro-stabilised cameras. It only had a 10 minute film capacity and he remembered an idea he had some years earlier.... He did station a friend with a walkie talkie at the entrance to the Place d'Etoile (hope I've spelt it right) as it was the one blind junction. The film (lasting all of 9 minutes) was released, but Claude was promptly summoned to the Paris head of Police (Prefecture?) who demanded Claude's licence "I have been ordered to seize your licence". Claude decided not to argue and handed it over. The head of police examined it carefully and then handed it back "But they didn't say for how long. My daughters enjoyed your film!"

I spent many years trying to get a VHS copy of it -without success) and eventually decided that it was an Urban Myth. Then the Daily Telegraph ran an article on it -one of the staff at Spirit Films came across a poor quality VHS copy and felt it deserved better. He contacted Claude who still had the master copy and was happy for Spirit to distribute it. £17 pounds later I had my copy -it really needs a large wide-screen TV or a projector to really enjoy it.

  2. Hi,

Any of Graham Hurley's "Faraday" novels. A comtemporary Morse, well possibly but a deal grittier than Morse. Set in Portsmouth. My only comment would be to read them in order as they do then make more sense.

Something a bit off the wall - Charles Stross's Halting State and Rule 34.

    Stu

I'd thoroughly recommend Graham Hurley; the first book is 'Turnstone'. Very gritty and meant to be an English Rebus (they share the same publisher). The Portsmouth setting is very realistic -I know all too well as being born and grew up there. I think he's finished the 12th and last book in the series. They are the sort of book you don't want to put down.

  3. Portfield at Chichester, supposedly the north end of PLUTO (Pipe Line Under The Ocean) was in use until the early 1990's but seems to have been abandoned since one of their last trains suffered a derailed TTA tank towards the rear that caught fire between Barnham and Chichester one morning.

The points into the Portfield site were disconnected during a weekend engineering possession sometime last year which also the Bartholomews siding on the opposite side of the line cut as well.

IIRC this also handled petrol for Tangmere; all the storage tanks are buried (as opposed to being underground). Interestingly there were reports in the local paper recently that the site is up for redevelopment. The location from Google maps is 50.831343,-0.753149.

  4. Yes, almost every City & Town will have a "High Street", it is the UK equivalent to Main Street.

One exception is a City or Town that grew up round a crossroad; then you'll get North/South/East/West Street. Chichester and Havant both feature this, as does Fareham (does my South Coast upbringing show?).

I live in Chichester now -Mrs Follower's geography isn't too good and is often found looking for shops in the wrong street....

A: The Financial Times crossword of course.

Shame on you for thinking of anything else!

    Now, where's my coat?

  6. Drill out the rivet from above* and then the coupling can easily be removed intact. (Sell on eBay if not broken).

    * Tricky in the case of open wagons as the rivets hold the body on.

Or offer on the classifieds here; I'm always on the lookout for the Peco couplings to 'convert' modern stock for my HD layout. I'm about to use my last couplings

for some Dapol spine wagons; ironically the couplings were sold under the Wrenn label.

  7. Old English Sheep dog, is she?

    Hi all.

This reminds me of the story of a chap who tried to cross an Old English Sheepdog with a wire-haired terrier

-to make a dog that could rub down the woodwork before painting it....

My sympathies to those who've lost relatives or who are trying to find suitable accomodation for them; I know

what your'e going through. My wife and I had to deal with moving my mother from a large 4 bedroomed house

to a small 1 bed flat. I'm happy to say she enjoyed the six or so years she was there before she had to go into

a home. Luckily we found a good one within half-a-mile of both her flat and her previous house. The first move

generated a vast amount of stuff to thow out which was heartbreaking, and I felt very sad on moving her into a

nursing home that all of her possessions were moved in one journey of our Yaris. Unfortunately the background

to that move lead to her collapsing and dying a few weeks later.
